    Default Scales?

For those of you who use scales at home, what brand/style do you use? Have you found it to be very accurate? Reliable? Long lasting? Where'd you get it? How much did you spend?

    I'm trying to shop around....

Hi Paige. I use the Tanita...looks like the model number is BF-681. You have to program in your height, age and excercise level and it has memory to store this info for 4 people. It also has a guest button if you just want to step on and get a quick weight.

What I like about this is...you step on it in bare feet and it calculates body weight by using your body's conductivity to arrive at this percentage.

It was all the rage in my weight loss forum last year so I decided to go for it. At around 60 bucks, it was worth every penny. Very accurate.

    Very welcome, pretty lady!

Even when shopping for a cheapie, make sure you go digital.

I had a nice scale and it broke so I haven't had a scale in a while. I need one though because I keep weighing myself in the gym in the evening after I've consumed water and food all day and I feel like a fat ass because I weigh more than I ever did before. I need to start weighing myself in the morning again so I feel more thin. And I know muscle weighs more than fat but damn how much more!

I use the tanita as well, but I don't know if the body fat percentage works accurately, b/c I also got a bf% reading at my gym and it was different (did the water thing and calipers) the same day, around the same time.
but otherwise it works great-has a digital reading that tells you like 127.3 lbs. so I like it otherwise.

For an affordable scale I've used "Taylor" brand.

I too have upgraded to the Tanita Bodyfat scale but it is always giving me different readings (the bf% part).

I don't think those bodyfat things work at all on those scales. We used to have one at the pilates studio I went to. I was a little heavy when I started there at about 120. I'm only 5'0" with a small frame. It told me I had something like 18% bodyfat. NO WAY! Then the lady who taught there who had a thin tight body got on and it told her something like 30%. That scale was full of shit!

You can be a stick with a high percentage of bodyfat and heavier (due to muscle) with low bodyfat.

The only reason that I know mine is pretty accurate is because I knew my % before I bought this scale and it was almost spot on. The one variable is if you don't get enough water...for some people, if they are dehydrated, they will get a higher reading.

No scales for me. Never owned one and never will. I don't see the point. I know when I'm gaining / losing weight and when I'm looking better / worse. I don't need a scale to tell me and I CERTIANLY don't need it to make me fret and worry about a couple ounces or pounds.

Sorry, this is not the info you wanted. Just couldn't help it. I think a scale is a waste of time and money.

^ Totally agree. Besides, I used to have an eating disorder...and getting a scale seems to be the starting point of obsessive behavior. No need to get my daughter seeing that. Besides, weight is arbitrary. When I weighed in at 130 pounds at 5'6", I was wearing a 4/6. When I weighed in at 140, I was wearing a 9/10.

I'm comfortable just exercising, eating right and knowing that I fit into the clothes I want to fit into.

Also, scales always only tell on half of the story. Buy a tape measure as well to measure out your arms, waist, hips, legs, etc as that will help you tell the 'whole' story.

Exactly what I was saying above. Weight really has no bearing on your bodyfat percentage. I was only 125 last year but wore a size 7. There are some girls who are 125 and wear a 2.

I agree with GCG, VG, and B about the tape measure and with going by how your clothes fit.

I use the scale only once a week to keep an eye on my maintenance...a few lbs difference and I know I overdid it.

Use it as a tool...not your main guide.
