    Default Modeling?

Recently, I found an ad in the Dallas Observer looking for women for nude/glamour/fetish adult photos. I called the number and the photographer sounded very professional. He claimed he had been doing adult photography for approximately 17 years, and that all of the photography is done in a studio in Dallas. (not an apartment or anything odd like that) He said that in order to do business, we would set up a meeting to see if I was the sort of model he was looking for, and then would set up a day for the session. The session pays $400.

I am planning on calling again with follow-up questions. (what are the photos used for, etc.) But I am curious about the general opinion here regarding responding to modeling ads in papers such as the Dallas Observer. If it sounds very legitimate, is it a safe bet that it is? (He's not asking me to meet him in an odd location, or requesting that I give him money, etc.)

I understand that nothing is ever 100% safe. Just looking for some advice.

Me, personally being a model, I've always been leery of photographers placing "ads" in newspapers.

Before you meet him, ask him for some references of the last 5 models he's worked for. Get telephone numbers only! (no email, since anyone can make a fake email an act like they have worked for him) A reference is your safety guide. I"m not sayin that just because all 5 models had a GREAT time with him, that he'll be the same for you, but a reference is just that..someone used to give you a little deeper insight on the person in question.

Not only find out what the images will be used for, but WHAT KINDS of glamour/fetish stuff he wants. You may be thinking whips and chains, whereas he could be thinking bondage with you tied at your wrists and ankles with a gag in your mouth.

$400 is alot of money, but find out if it's really "worth" it. Ask him how long he plans to shoot for? It should only be like 3-4hrs...dont' let him talk you into making this an all day event. Photographers who've been in the business as long as he has should know how to work a camera, and shouldn't have to take all day.

Make sure you bring a chaperone. DO NOT ever do a modeling shoot alone. You don't know this man, no matter how professional he sounds.

Also, during your introductory meeting, if he expresses interest in working with you, ask him for a copy of the model release. He can "tell you" what he plans on doing with those pictures, but ultimatley it's up to what's in that model release form. Read it over carefully, and have someone else (preferably a lawyer) look over the wording.

    Best of luck,
    Cin

Most legit photogs, even ones who shoot nude work, openly put their names on web sites or forums they post on. Even the adult mags usually put the name of the photog on the pictorial, or at least their studio (common in foreign layouts). Did he say to keep his confidential? If he did, that's a red flag. Otherwise, post his name here. Maybe someone will be able to say good or bad about him. Even those who don't have their own website often have something on OneModelPlace or similar sites. If he's been in this biz for 17 years, he should have something online. Another tip: try Googling his name, or asking about him on model and related photography forums. Models will know him by now.
