Wow. I've had a very eventful night.
A couple of hours ago, I went outside to have a ciggy on my front porch. I was out for a few minutes when I saw this car driving a little on the road, then stopping. Then a lady would call a name out the window. This repeated for a few minutes. She then turned around at the end of the cove, right by my house. Then, she pulled into my driveway, stuck her head out the window, looked at me, and asked if I was who she was calling. I think the name was "Teresa" or "Resa".
So I went up to the car, and asked her if she was alright. She immediately broke down and started crying. I figured she was just lost, and with it being dark out, she was very afraid. So I asked her where she lived, and she didn't know. I asked if there was anyone I could call for her. Thank the Gods she remembered her phone number and her husband's name. I tried calling a few times, but no answer. I talked to her for a few minutes to get her to calm down, and then I tried to call again. Luckily, her husband answered the phone. I told him who I was, and told him that his wife was in my driveway and that she was lost.
He then explained to me that she was in her 80s, and has Alzheimers. He was just about to call the police when the phone rang. Apparently, she had told him that she was going to sit on the front porch while he was cooking dinner to get some fresh air. She swiped the keys when he wasn't looking and took off in the car, took a few turns, and didn't know where she was.
Thankfully, we only live 10 minutes away from her house. So I gave her husband directions and he told me he would be right there. He asked that in the meantime I take her in the house so that she didn't try to drive off. I brought her in, got her some ice water, and kept her talking. She adored Delia, and mentioned that her daughter was coming over and bringing her "little one" with her. She broke down again when I asked if it was a grandson or granddaughter. She couldn't remember and that upset her.
It didn't take but 10 minutes for her husband to show up, with most of their family with him. They thanked me repeatedly. I just said that I was glad that I was outside at the time, because I don't know if any of my neighbors would've helped her at all. Her husband told me that he's going to be locking the keys up from now on. He was very impressed that she was able to tell me her phone number---TWICE! I told her to keep that number in her head and hold onto it.
I am just very glad that I was in the right place at the right time. You always hear on the news that Alzheimers patients take off and are found too late.
My heart seriously goes out to anyone who's had to deal with the disease when a loved one suffers from it. I haven't yet, thankfully. This was close enough for me.
