    Default getting a husky!(advice?)

I decided on getting a siberian husky.

I think I have found him, however I am scared how he will get along with my 2 kitties.. (aka my babies!)

Anyone familiar with the breed? I have done some online research. Some say they get along, others say no. I guess you can't really tell until you bring the dog home. Also, training makes a big difference.

I just dont want to put my two cats in danger. I would die if anything happened.

Huskies are fine because they are bred to be working dogs.

But it's true that if you introduce them as babies, it'll be fine.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier and they are bred to hunt small mammals, and he wouldn't hurt any of my ferrets. I introduced them as "friends" and the ferrets don't really care for him, but he just wants to play with them.

    A rabbit or a cat....something he doens't know....he will go after.

Husky's are working dogs and used as sled dogs in Alaska and other extremely cold climates. Husky's don't like extremely hot temperatures and will shed a lot of coat if not kept cool. As far as getting along with the cats it will be harder for the cats to adjust to the new puppy since he is coming into their territory. But everybody typically establishes their space eventually and everything is fine.

Isn't it a wee bit hot for a husky in FL? A friend of mine has two of them, and a few cats, and they get along fine. I do know his were fairly difficult to train, though. They didn't like to listen for awhile. They are pretty dogs. I think it's the eyes. Good luck!

We had a husky when I was growing up in Las Vegas. We had a pool and she'd go in all the time...swim a lap and come in the house (all wet).

She did get hot if she was outside in the middle of the day, but I think if you keep them brushed, in a/c during the day, and go for walks at night when it's cooler, it's good. And if you have a pool your dog can swin in, even better!

Something to remember about huskies. As mentioned by previous people, they are working dogs. Working dogs are NOT like cats though. Typically, they need a LOT of attention all the time. They are bred to do a task and if they don't get a chance to work, they take out their energy in other areas. If you are getting a Husky and plan on leaving him/her home a lot alone, be prepared to have your house destroyed on a daily basis. Dogs like this need a LOT of attention all the time. They needs long walks daily, not once a week or every now and then. They need to have a place to displace the energy they would normally burn doing things like pulling sleds etc. So be sure you are going to be able to give this dog a TON of attention, every day, for 10+ years. Working with a dog adoption rescue I see it all the time where people fall in love with the look of a breed only to find out it takes way more commitment than they were willing to give. So, if you are making this commitment, just make sure you are comfortable in giving your new pooch the level of attention they need and you all will be one big happy family.

Check with your insurance company. Some companies will cancel your insurance if you have a husky, pit bull, rotreiller, and a couple of other breeds. As hard as it is to get insurance in FL, it is worth checking into. But, do it without letting them know you are currently insured with them because then you will be outed...

My sister in law had one, and it was great. They do have a tendency to run away and I don't know if hers ran or was kidnapped, but it disappeared.

I still go with Boxerss..... LOL.

I had a Husky in Fl. for 6 years and I loved him. He did need to be brushed almost daily. It never ceased to amaze me the amount of hair he would shed. Other than that he was great, and got along with my cats(3) just fine. As others have said if it's a puppy they will all be fine. It's the cat that will need a little time to adjust (they won't be happy about a dog in "their" space at first).
Since I have only owned the one I don't know if this is a common husky trait but mine was definately a one owner type personality. I was married and had 2 kids at that time and although the dog was always friendly to everyone he only really obeyed me. It used to make my hubby crazy, but I guess it was because I spent the most time with the dog walking him, feeding, bathing etc...

After 3 years, mine still chases the cats around like crazy. She did learn that there are sacred "cat places" where she wasn't allowed though.
They need room to run in a backyard, like everyone said, they are a working dog and need to expend tons of energy. Daily walks are also a must, along with daily brushings. If you fear dog hair, I'd rethink things.

One tip: Put on black pants right before you leave the house. Put them on any sooner and you've got a nice pair of fur slacks...

I'm a husky lover, we were going to get one when we got a dog out here but we found our dane instead(now I have to wait til we buy a house).
Just like the dane, your husky is going to require a LOT of attention - but the rewards are worth it.

(Nikki's (the husky) got pics on my myspace!) She's a bit of a doofus. Distracted by everything. If she were pulling a sled, they would NOT let this one lead.

If you still live in Florida, please reconsider getting a Husky. They are bred for arctic climates, not tropical. Imagine if you had a thick fur coat made for Eskimos and you couldn't take it off... would YOU be happy in Florida?

I always get so upset when I see people with Huskies in hot climates. It's cruel. Chihuahuas shouldn't be in Alaska, and Huskies shouldn't be in Florida.

this is dead-on as I'm the owner of a high-energy dog. If I don't walk him after I get home from work and try to go straight to bed, I will find the bed linens destroyed. And this is a 2 mile walk. Every day.

I knew a girl that had a husky and he pulled up all the kitchen vinyl tiles one day, when left alone.

< Has a husky/ russian sheap dog, but for the first yer i thought he was just a husky. They have such mjor ADD they tend to ignore other animals unless there is something going on, like a fight, and you most def' need to run with him or hell act out and be a big pain in the ass. This happend with my dog, but it might not be the same wih yours. My dog was pretty much left outside on his own at a farm in russia so he had his own sleep clock going on, which was sleep all day and stay up howling all night. If I don't run my dog for a good 30 minutes, he won't sleep at night. This is cool tho cause it gets me motivated to run. Also , please don't cut his hir! They are so beautifull with a natural coat.

    Elle,

I am with the others on reconsidering the breed - Florida is toooo hot for Huskys. There is a guy in my complex that has a husky which he SHAVES in the summer time because the dog nearly has a heat stroke just going potty outside .. it is so pathetic looking. I keep Chloe's hair short (my cocker spaniel), but she still sheds like crazy - I cannot imagine if her coat was as full and heavy as a husky.

They are absolutely beautiful animals, though

I agree with sitri on the boxer.. they are awesome. Another fun loving athletic breed are labs. (but be prepared to have them drive you nuts for the first two years though- BOUNDLESS energy... and chewers!!) I think that the best overall loyal, protective dogs are german shepherds. If I had a yard, I'd get a couple of shepherds - they are sweet, but they would also die fighting to protect you.

Chloe, on the other hand.. not so much of a guard dog. LOL.

I didn't see that you were in florida. I'm in Texas and I keep mine inside for the hotest part of the year, but he hates being inside soooo much. I'm considering adopting him out to someone up north. The thing about cutting a dogs hair so short, when it's natural coat is so long is they get sun burned very easly and you don't even realize they are in pain. The heat messes up their eating habits. And if you're not really carfull with timing between feeding them, and letting them outside, they will vomit. You have to be so carfull and the dog is still unhappy. I really don't think you should get one. I have mine because he was at a shelter and someone in texas would have gotten him anyways, so it might as well have been me. I'm telling you, you get this dog, he will be unhappy and you'll see it in the way he acts and looks, then you'll feel bad about getting him, but not want to send him away because you'll love him. I go threw this all the time with my dog.

I had a siberian husky, Misiu for 13 years. We just recently had to put him down. Any way, he required a lot of attention, was very active, he loved to run and play. He loved water. He had his own kiddie pool in the summer and would run head long into any body of water he came across. His only fault was that he was stubborn. I was told this this common in siberian huskies. Good luck and post some pictures!

They are so stubborn! And mine was hard to leash train ( duh ). But mine hates water!!??!!?? I wish he'd go swimming cause I'm sure the summer would be a little more easy on him if he'd get in a kiddie pool. I think he's scared from the evil bath time.

Are those white dogs huskies? My mom had a rescue German Shephard that was supposed to be pure Shepphard but she looked a lot like that. She was quite old and had very thick fur and the guy who had her before shaved her down. We kept her inside so she was okay with her hair growning back. I'm not sure exactly if she had husky in her or not though.

I puppy-sat for a young Lab a couple years ago and let me tell you that dog was WILD! Every day I'd get home and walk her or run her a bit. One night I got home too late and didn't feel safe taking her out and she went crazy. She was still a puppy but a HUGE puppy and finally I wrestled her into my car and drove her to my mom's house and ran back and forth in the yard with her. The girl I was housesitting for only had a condo with a small yard and the dog being cooped up all day was nuts. Even when she had had proper exercise I would come home and find various things chewed up like pens, cups, nail polish bottles, underwear, you name it. She pulled a cup of pens off the counter and the cup and pens were chewed up everywhere. Now is was a sweet dog. Don't get me wrong. But you have to be able to give the proper attention and exercise to a Lab.

If I had a yard, I'd get a couple of shepherds - they are sweet, but they would also die fighting to protect you.
My parents had a beautiful shepherd when I was a baby. He was HUGE and people thought he was scary but he was sooo protective of me. My parents said the breed is very smart too. He died when I was two because his stomach got twisted up when he jumped up too fast.

Now I have a Maltese. She's HIGH HIGH HIGH HIGH HIGH MAINTENANCE! She's 7 pounds of love though. She is the sweetest little dog and my family loves her just as much as I do. She might also die trying to protect me even though I don't know what good it would do. I like having a smaller dog because they are easier to handle in a smaller place and can sit on my lap. Also, Maltese don't shed. I'd have more dogs if I had the time and money but this one is a handful. As I'm writing this she's probably off chewing her tail in the bathroom so I guess I need to go put her cone back on her head.

I'm adding on a pic of Samantha shortly before she died. She lived to a pretty good age too for a larger dog, like 13 or 14 I think or maybe older. We adopted her at the age of 11 I think.

I got my 3 lbs of joy in this moody ball of fur mistaken for a mouse. At night he's the bigest ass, and I think it's on purpose, but in the day time he's so sweet and just wants to cuddle and sleep. He's about a month and a half in that pic, but he's 4 and a half months now, names Bambi.

The pics above are of Maverick, a husky with a little russian goat shephard ( yes there is such a thing ). It's pretty commen, when the dogs tail is really puffy and has an arch to it ( that dogs tail never hangs down ) it might have russian shephard in it, unless of corse that's natural for the breed.

I wouldn't recomend getting a husky since you live in FL. They do get sick from heat stroke and will stop eatting. They also need to be walked or ran EVERY DAY. Not just a walk around the block to take a crap, but an actual physically exerting walk. When left alone for long periods of time they will tear things up out of boredom, more so than other dogs. Also they are very pack like and have a habit of running away. They chase cats because they are very natural hunters and chase things that run. A good friend of mine in college had 5 huskies that her x-husband had trained to pull a sled, they are beautiful dogs but even in moderate temperature they are usually warm so I reconsidering your breed would be best probably.

Oh yea i forgot about that detail. My dog is on leash every second of his life. If i was to let him off, I'd never see him again. And don't think anything other then an 8ft fence with nothing large near it ( for him to jump off of ) is going to keep him caged. My dog climed threw our airconditioning vents once, and I had to chase him about 4 blocks. I don't have enough fingers to count all the nights I've run down the street at 3am in my underwear, because somehow he's found a way out. If you've ever seen the movie SnowDog, well when all the dogs are mean and tearing things up and running off, It's all true!
