    Default Sugar addict

I'm hopelessly addicted to sugar lately. I just can't stop buying little chocolates. It's awful. I know exams does this to me, but ever since I quit smoking I find it sooo hard to stop. I can't give up carbs completely either because my stomach can't handle that kind of diet, digestively speaking. Is there any sure fire method to boost will power and reduce cravings for sweet poison? I'm utterly pathetic and I really really want to lose ten pounds- but eating this crap, it doesn't matter how much I run, I just stay the same weight.

Is there anything that makes a person crave sugar (especially chocolate) more? Any mineral deficiency or something? I know I need to just stop cold turkey and every day I say I will, but I'm a spineless worm.

I make myself hot cocoa with Fry's cocoa powder, milk/cream and Splenda and it doesn't affect my ability to lose. It's not reaaaallly satisfying but is chocolate-y.

Try chromium picolinate to help with your sugar cravings. It's available at like GNC and is a main ingredient in many diet aid/fat burners.

Do you eat fruit regularly? I satisfy my sweet tooth with lots of fruit intake. I love fresh apples and grapes with vanilla yogurt. Strawberries and low sugar hershey's sauce is yummy too!

I also buy the no sugar added/low fat fudgecicles (40 cals), Jello's sugar free chocolate pudding (60 cals), and International Coffee's sugar free/fat free "Suiss Mocha" drink powder (30 cals) for treats.

I'm trying to wean myself off of "sugarsugarsugarsugargimmesugarsugarsugar" cravings. Given how insane it seems to make me sometimes, I'm trying to go cold turkey on refined sugar (as of, oh, about four hours ago. did I mention I'm crazy?).

Supposedly, if you want ice cream, you may just want something cold, which is how our bodies sometimes express the need for water. Some people say a glass of ice water will work, but I've had much better luck with a very cold glass of milk. For candy cravings, maybe try and find some super-ripe oranges (since they're near the end of their season right now), or really ripe whatever-fruit-is-in-season and have that instead. I'm always amazed at how sweet fruit really is when it's ripe, and I honestly never expect it to satisfy my sweet tooth so much.

Earlier today, when I went "holy crap, I'm a sugar addict!" I was trying to figure out why my brain was crying out for ice cream (no!), then a doughnut (no!), then a candy bar (no!) but milk or a roll or a piece of fruit wouldn't cut it at all -- then I realized I just wanted a treat. So I went to the bagel shop in the student union and got myself an everything bagel with onion and chive cream cheese instead (yum!).

Maybe if you figure out a treat for yourself that isn't sweet (or isn't totally made of sugar at least), you can use it to try and bypass the crazy sweets cravings.

And Sirena, be careful with using artificial sweeteners. Some studies have shown that consistantly consuming fake sugar leads people to eat more calories in the end. Your body initially thinks, "Oh, sugar. Excellent, that's less calories I need." Then, later, when the expected amount of energy isn't there, your body essentially starts to be distrustful of sugar as an indicator of calories; even when you eat real sugar, your brain is going "Ha! You don't fool me! Keep eating!" It's kind of a damned if you do (more calories from eating more) damned if you don't (more calories from sugar) kind of thing.

Today at lunch I was talking with one of my coworkers (really smart guy, not at all the crazy hippy or anti-food-corp conspiracy nut, given as I work for a giant processed foods manufacturer), and he mentioned that many people have a serious problem with yeast in their lower gut, which feed off of all the excess sugar in the modern diet. Going totally no-sugar (not even fruit) for a few weeks will starve them out, and give a person a lot more energy once they're gone, but the detox can be kinda brutal, especially emotionally. I'd like to try and sugar-detox myself at some point, but I realized that processed sugar is in almost every single thing I eat.

Anyway, sorry for rambling there, but the easiest way to stop the urge to buy lots of chocolate may just be to stay away from stores selling it as much as possible. And when you do give into the urge (which is not necessarily a bad thing), get the good kind of chocolate. High-cocoa bittersweet chocolate has tons of heart-healthy effects, as well as lifting the mood.

Ack! I'm so addicted to those. I don't know...you're not supposed to have more than 4 a day, and I do...I go crazy for them sometimes. I kind of scared they're going to give me kidney stones or something!

I hate fake Sugars...really do your research and make sure you're OK with putting those chemicals in your body.

I was forced to go 'cold turkey' on sugar after I got really really ill, and the dr found that from all the fast food/pepsi/sugar i had been consuming, i had developed candida (yeast) in my whole body. plus, my blood cells were sticking together from the amount of sugar i had. (scary)

So, I couldn't have anything with even sugar in it, though I could have fruit occasionally. It sucked bad, but after a month, sugar made me sick when i ate it. Since then, I've been able to steer clear for the most part.

**Side note...sugar is considered *by some* the most addictive legal drug in society right now. Read the definition of a 'drug' and you'll see sugar more than matches up.

Oh my god! I am SUCH a sugar addict too!
Sugar and carbs. Lately I'm trying to have something with protein like a light yogurt or a cheese stick instead of something sugar-y or carb-y. We'll see if it works.
My downfalls are soft pretzels (I'm from the Philly area and they are SOOO good here!!!), ice cream, and candy.

I have really been working on cutting out the damn sugar lately. Splenda is great, it is made from real sugar, but is better for you. I read recently that sugar is really bad (aging) for your skin. One of my friends has cirrosis of the liver, from years of eatng sugar. Sugar is a toxic poison. I was watchng Suzanne Sommers on HSN, she sells non refined sugar & sugar less cookes, etc. She said that since it's empty nutritionally, after eating sweets, the body starts craving more to try & compensate not getting the nutrition in the first place. I also eat fresh & dried fruits.

I'm a complete chocoholic AND sugar addict.

I agree with everyone though; when you eat fruits, you don't crave sweets as much. I love grapes. They're sweet and taste great! If you freeze them, it's like eating tiny popsicles.

I think you saw my thread. I ate the protein bar with frozen yogurt & crushed almonds today. Was yummy.

Also, fresh ripe strawberries(or any fruit you'd like) with fat free cool whip is good.

Apples and bananas are yummy with natural unsalted peanut butter.

Thank you everyone- I just wanted to update and say that I've been doing so much better since switching from chocolate to fruit. I can't eat dairy, but things like frozen bananas with vanilla silk soy milk (I peel the bananas and wrap them in wax paper to put in the freezer...they taste cool and creamy, sweet and amazing when I have a craving!).

I made a rule where if I have have have to eat a sweet, I reach for some fruit first, then drink some water. I tell myself if I really still want it, I can get some chocolate, but so far this has really done the trick for killing the cravings. Also, if I absolutely need chocolate, the reduced calorie hot chocolate nixes that craving for a fraction of the calories/fat. And I look less bloated to boot, so merci bien!
