    Default Bunnies!

I adopted a bunny a few weeks ago! She's a cross between a french lop and a Netherland dwarf and she's super cute, but she's so IRRITABLE! She seemed really affectionate in the store but I feel like she was just playing nice to get someone to take her home ha ha. Every time I put my hand in her cage she freaks out and attacks me. I had to get my boyfriends mom (an experienced bunny handler) to cut her nails so she couldn't draw blood!

Is it normal for a bunny to be so protective of her things? I mean, she attacks me when I put food in her dish, clean her poop, give her hay, touch her chew stick...I think she seriously hates me. I put an old tea towel in her house so she had a soft bed to snuggle in and she decided to pee on it yesterday and now she smells like a barnyard. My boyfriend was on the floor holding her when I reached in to grab the towel (ya know, so I could wash the bunny pee off it) and she FREAKED. She bit him, shot across the room, dove into her house and then bit me for touching her bed!

Is this normal bunny behavior?! I thought she'd settle down after a week or so once she got used to her new surroundings but jeez! I love her but I don't know if I want to keep her if she's going to be like this...so basically, if she's going to be the polar opposite of what I thought she was when I bought her. I need some advice from other bunny owners!

And if you have a female bunny please get her spayed. Females become VERY aggressive if they are not fixed. They also have a high chance of getting cancer. I learned this the hard way when my first rabbit died of breast cancer. Just make sure you find a doctor who has experience with spaying rabbits.
You can always contact your local house rabbit society for info on doctors, ect....
Rabbits are wonderful pets. I hope you get your bunny problem solved.

One of our Members, Whirlerz, has had bunnies and is quite knowledgeable about them as well. You can always shoot her a PM, or she may see this thread and respond.

I have no idea, since the only bunny I've had was at a very young age.

I adopted two bunnies last summer from a local rescue group.

Without a doubt, get her spayed!!! Female rabbits have a 99% chance of developing uterine cancer by the age of 5 years if you do not get them spayed. Since you bought her at a store, I highly doubt she is spayed.

As for the aggressive behavior, all bunnies are protective of their stuff, and you should NEVER reach into their cage and pick them up...let them come to you. As much as WE want to pick them up and cuddle them, they aren't inherently cuddly creatures. Think about it, in the wild, the only time they are lifted up off the ground is when a predator captures them. So when you reach into the cage and pick her up, it fires her adrenaline to fight or flight. The grunting and boxing is normal behavior when faced with a predator and backed into a corner. Instead, lure her out of the cage with a carrot. Sit on the floor and let her come to you. In time she will start to trust you. Be patient, I have had mine since August and I'm still working on getting the male to trust me.

As for the peeing on the towel, that is how they mark their turf. Are you litterbox training her? Is her cage big enough for a litter box? I made a really neat bunny condo out of those wire cubes you can get at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Check out this website for ideas
    http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/nic.html

Also, they need plenty of attention and out of the cage time. My buns get pretty mad at me if I don't let them hop around the house at least every other day.

If she is spayed, think about getting her a mate from a local bunny rescue organization. Bunnies are social animals and will form bonds with another. It took me three weeks to bond my two, but now they are always snuggling and can't be in separate rooms.

I will just pop in and say that when and if you do get them mellow enough to roam about the house, make sure to keep an eye on them. I had one once about 15 years ago, a lop named Salvador Buni, and he would chew on furniture and the bathroom/kitchen cabinets constantly if he wasn't closely monitored. He also chewed thru the controller wires to my Nintendo. We did eventually get him pretty chill though, and he'd snuggle on the couch while we watched tv, kinda like a cat. He was easy to litterbox train, too, definitely look into that.

Give her time. Just sit near her open cage and talk to her. I have had my bunny for 8 months and I still put my hand out and if she comes over then I pet her. I put her food and water dishes and litter box (she has a covered cat kind with the plastic liners) right near the door so I don't have to reach into her house far to get them. She is agressive if anyone other than me trys to pet her. Just be patient--she will trust you once you prove yourself!

It's that way with females of any species.

    You'll get used to it.

But, what Ms. 666 said about rabbit.org. Go there.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

Anyway, as mentioned, check out rabbit.org. There are also rabbit magazines, they only are published once or twice a year. Look for them in pet stores, or Borders, they have lots of info also. Also exotic veternarian's offices sometimes have info/newsetters, etc. Rabbits are very skittish, timid animals, by nature, they do settle down, but they instictively react as being alert to preditors by nature. Please do PM me with any questions, good luck.

A bit of the original subject, but I just spoke to a friend of mine who has been helping with this effort. Apparently a hoarder/collector in the Reno, NV area had about 1000 rabbits in her back yard. The Best Friends Network deployed their tactical assault force and has been spaying/neutering non-stop, gathering volunteers, building hutches for the rabbits and has begun looking for homes. Some are adoptable as pets. Others, once spayed, can be kept as semi-feral backyard colonies. Apparently some are (or were) in pretty bad shape.

Sounds like the bunny from Monty Python & The Quest for the Holy Grail.

I had a bunny and it was MEAN AS HELL! I couldn't feed it or anything. The damn rabbit would try to take my finger off if I just put the food in the cage. My dad ended up bonding well with the bunny though and he could pet her/him on his lap and play with it. We called it Mr. Bunny because we weren't sure what sex it was but now I think it might have been an unspade female after reading this. I adopted it from a friend so I don't even know where she got it from. It lived a pretty long life though but only bonded with my dad. Maybe it was a she and she was in love with him!

So what percentage of the people here even get that reference?
