    Default Hydrogenated face creams?

Is having hydrogenated stuff in your face cream bad? Or neutral? I have this Cetaphil moisturizer that has 'Hydrogenated polyisobutene' in it. I haven't been using it because of that, but is it an issue?

From my viewpoint, if hydrogenation results in extra hydrogen atoms, and extra hydrogen atoms in the body are free radicals, it must be bad, even just on the skin.

Any knowledge on this out there?

I don't imagine it would be bad for you. The main problem with hydrogenated oils in food is that they mess up your blood cholesterol. That's obviously got to do with eating them. Honestly can't say whether they'd cause free radicals on the skin, but my guess is no -- a guess only.

Cosmetics contain all kinds of things that would be simply horrible if you ate them, though. I mean, read a lotion bottle sometime! You don't eat plastic, or silicone, or wood alcohol. But all these things show up in cosmetics. I sometimes find it a bit scary, and I don't use any product daily that is mostly composed of incomprehensible ingredients.

Want a more serious rundown of what to worry about and what not to? I just found this site and bookmarked it. Looks super useful.

Mind you, probably only useful to someone with a scientific eye -- for example, on an Avon lipstick I found many hazard warnings, but probably few actual hazards, because you have to read and eliminate things that aren't serious worries but sound like they are.

Such as "ingredient not assessed for safety by the cosmetics board" when the ingredient is something you eat (beta carotene, tea leaves.) Or, various ingredients labeled as skin sensitizers: yes, you might have an allergic reaction to your makeup, but I assume you know that and change brands accordingly? Etc.

The best products for your skin are the same ones that don't contain anything dangerous for you to eat. Hydrogonated oils aren't "dangerous," exactly, but they aren't good for your skin and are really unnecessary in a skin care product. They're fillers, and can make your skin greasy and clog your pores.

There are only two companies in all my (extensive) research and that of the aesthaticians I know that are completely good for you, contain adequate antioxidants, *and* do what they say they will. Neither can be purchased in store. I've used both, and have fallen totally IN LOVE with one. The other, I felt, was just okay and way too expensive not to see reasonable results. The one I am using now is Arbonne (my skin is like a baby's butt, I got guessed at 19 the other day and I am 33), the other one I mention is Rhona Allison.

Everyone has different prefernces, but most of us don't look carefully at out skin care ingredients like we do our food. It's awesome that you did, and asked about it. Hydrog. oil isn't going to kill you or anything, but it will not be beneficial (and possibly ber very detrimental) to your skin.
