    Default Polgamy

Has anyone seen the new T.V. show on HBO called Big Love? It is about a suburban businessman and his three wives (yes, three!). It is a completely new sub-culture (new to me anyway) that seems to be getting allot of press. If you Google Polygamy you will get all kinds of results about it. What are your thoughts?

    hahahahaaha!

yeah, its only a new subculture to you sweetie.
    starring bill paxton right?

they're MORMONS, and their prophet said, amongst other things, that polygamy is good.
he himself had like fifty children and I dont know how many wives.
officially mormons banned the practice, because the government looks unfavorably on it, but theres definitely polygamy and wife-sharing going on under the table with some of them.

there were some mormons near where i went to high school, and i went over to this one mormon girl's house a couple of times.
first time i was there, i met her mom, and later i heard her mom and dad in the shower together messin around!
thwn next time i was over, i met a DIFFERENT mom, and later heard THEM messin around in the shower!

personally, i find the practice distasteful.
im sorry but there can be no equality between the sexes unless a woman is allowed to have more than one husband, and keep them all in little seperate houses on the same lot, and make THEM wait for their turn.

    ^^^Well said Kita!

Actually, polygamy was outlawed in the 1890's, so it's not technically "allowed". Watching the show, it seems like a lot of work to hide it.

But yes, I do watch the show. Don't know why because it makes me uncomfortable at times. I just can't tear myself away...it's like rubbernecking.

I was raised Mormon, so I find the show interesting. My mom is from Southern Utah, and yeah...there's definitely "pligs" around. Whoever writes the show did their homework about Mormons, though, they know all the church lingo. Harry Dean Stanton as the Plig Mafia type guy makes me laugh, too.

I got a lot of shit growing up about the Mormon thing, like "How many wives does your dad have?". Over time, my standard response became "Oh, just two", completely seriously.

I live in Utah now, and yes I definitely run into some polygamists. I personally think it's just another way for the guy to get laid more Then again, it tends to bite him in the ass, since they don't believe in birth control, he gets tons of kids!

Read "Under the Banner of Heaven" for a really eye-opening history of the Mormon church. The author is an ex-Mormon and has adopted a few of the "lost boys" created by this culture - the good-looking young teenage boys (around 11-13) get run out of town because the old men want all the 12-year-old girls to themselves. Most of them wind up on the streets. The girls have no choice who they're married off to, and domestic violence is rampant.

I have no problem with polygamy itself, but the participants must be consenting adults. I wouldn't mind being in a triangle relationship - a guy and two bisexual girls who all live together, sleep together, etc. But that's not quite the same thing.

    Who can argue with that?

I really don't get this. I don't practice polygamy, but I don't find anything intrinsically unhealthy or unnatural about 3, 4 or more people all feeling romantic love for each other at the same time.

I have loved 2 women very intensely at the same time before. In another culture, and if they loved each other as well, I could definitely see having a multi-partner relationship.

It sucks if there's abuse and violence happening but that sucks with monogamy too obviously. Other than that I have no problem with it. A lot of "monogamous" men cheat on their wives and have girlfrinds on the side anyway. I always thought it was illegal because you could have a lot of exemptions on your taxes if you have like three wives and 15 kids. I though it was all about the government not wanting to write them a huge check every year.

I also don't have a problem with polygamy as long as the people involved are consenting adults . Now would I be one of those consenting adults. No way ! I'm not very good a sharing things much less people, LOL !

Pinkkitten, you're exactly right about why it's illegal. The government doesn't want to lose the income, and it would cost the taxpayers more in other areas to make up for it. Plus, in a lot of these families, the women aren't allowed to work and the men can't support all those wives and children, so the women are classified legally as single mothers and draw huge welfare checks.

How in the hell could a man make enough to support all those wives and kids? I can barely pay my own bills for me and my dog. I have a friend who is in a relationship with a man and a woman and she calls them her husband and wife and it works for them and who knows, maybe it could work for me, but I'd have to have more of a say in the matter than just to be one of many wives and not be able to work. Can the wives sleep with each other?

No, homosexuality is a horrible crime in that community. A guy is lucky if his wives are friends; generally they just tolerate each other as a necessary fact of life. If two of a man's wives had sex with each other and they were caught, I'm sure there would be terrible consequences.

I've heard of this show but have no desire to watch it. I had a Mormon girlfriend in college whose grandfather was polygamous...he had nine 'wives' and about 34 children.

To me, being Asian, there's some similiarities between the concept of polygamy for religious beliefs/reasons and the fact that throughout the centuries in Japan, China, Vietnam, etc...men of means usually had several mistresses or concubines who were often called 'wives' as well. Check out the film RAISE THE RED LANTERN if you want to see what I mean. My grandfather had mistresses too. And most of these Asian men had children from these women. So I guess in a sense that's kind of similiar.

In reality 1 woman and 3 men probably have a better chance of keeping everyone sexually satisfied than 1 man and 3 women.

But you're right I wouldn't go for it. Sorry.

I love Raise the Red Lantern... most critics seem to think it's Zhang Yimou's best, but I would say that To Live is better. Watch his Ju Dou for the peasants' version of Lantern's view on relationships in that era of Chinese history. (Sorry, geeking out for a sec... I'm a major Chinese cinema buff, and Zhang Yimou is just short of a god in my opinion!)

Anyway, throughout most of human history, men have had as many wives, mistresses, concubines, etc. as their means could support. It's our human biology. Monogamy is a freakish, recent invention; by nature, our males operate this way for the sex and we women take their support and cheat on the sly when we find a better mate, or even leave the first mate for the better one. Animals which are by nature monogamous, like gibbons, just are. We are not. Of course we have more mastery over our baser instincts than they do, but those instincts are still there.

Mormons were polygamists because they were struggling on the waggon trail, a lot of men died, therefore the other men would take the widdows and their children into their family so they wouldn't be alone. Yes, I would have to say that for theses times I believe it was appropriate, it was not about sex (although that is what it turned into) and if you understand the history behind it then it makes sense. I do think it took the church a little to long to change it's ways and the Mormons who do it now are not members of the current establishment but members that disagreed with changes and have formed their own denominations that have strayed from the core of the religion.

Actually, it was about sex. Polygamy was not originally part of the Mormon church. The church was fairly well established before Smith started engaging in secret "polygamy" (aka keeping mistresses). When he first started talking about polygamy to the church leaders, they almost ran him out, and it was a huge controversy that almost destroyed the early church. Many did leave at that point.

The modern polygamist communities are similar in mindset. Nearly all the time, it IS about sex.
