Sad I started jogging and my knees hurt! HELP!!!

ok so I started running about 3 weeks ago. Now I've noticed that my knees seem sore afterwards. It's not painful, but it IS a bit uncomfortable. I don't think I'm overdoing it I pace myself and when it gets to be too much then I just walk for awhile then run for a bit again. I'm a totally new runner I've never run before in my life. Is this normal? Will it go away? Will it get worse? Could it be my form? Maybe it's my shoes? HELP! I like the results I'm seeing and I don't want to stop!!!

I ran cross-country for 4 years, and had a whole host of muscle and joint problems... Some of this applies more to long-distance; I don't know how much you're running.

    1) How good are your shoes? Are they made specifically for running? Are they old? (a good rule is to throw them out every 300 miles)
    2) Are you running on concrete/asphalt? If so, try running on grass or a track instead.
    3) Are you weight training? Squats, with proper form and a weight belt, can really strengthen your knees, and always helped in my performance. If you don't strength train, your joints might not be strong enough to handle the impact.
    4) You might also try wearing a light knee brace for support.

    Hope this helps-- good luck!

yep i'd look at the shoes first. try going to an actual store geared for runners. they should have someone that can analyze your gait to find the right shoe for you. i would suggest taking a joint supplement with msm and glucosamine. it takes awhile for it to build up and work but works well.

    Running hurts when you start.

And it's usually something that hurts that eventually makes you stop.

if it's your KNEES and they feel stiff and what not

    its called shin splints.

I have em' and am an avid runner. It helps to get real running shoes, that are fitted for your feet to correct the shin splints.

Dont ice them down ( your knees ) use a warm bath etc afterwards

if it hurts like someone kicked the shit out of you, slow down and walk. Do NOT push running.

take advil after or before, but most importantly get real running shoes made for shin splints.

Any running store ( not foot locker ) with people that specalize in it will fit and help you.

Total cost for the shoes 110 bucks.

Well, they don't hurt when I run, it's kinda an after effect a day later...like I don't even know how to describe it but they kinda bother me. I don't think they're shin splints...I think I had shin splints when I was still stripping but I was able to alleviate that by decreasing my heel height (or maybe it was due to the weight of the damn shoe haha) but that was actually my shins...I thought shin splints were that sore pain in your shins, no?

Anyhow, maybe it is my shoes the shoes are running shoes but I've owned them for a very long time. I just never RAN in them before so I figured they'd be ok. Plus I didn't want to run out (haha pun) and buy some expensive running shoes only to discover that I hate running and wasn't going to stick with it. But I'm finding that I really LIKE it!!!

I don't think I'm overexerting myself at all I'm the queen of take-it-easy. I run for 30 minutes and log about slightly more than 2 miles. This is a combonation of running and fast walking when the running gets to be too much for me. My jogging pace varies from 4.5 to 5 mph and then when I do my fast walk it's like 4 or 4.1 mph. I'm going more for time as opposed to distance. Perhaps in a couple weeks I'll bump the time up to 45 minutes.

Anyhow, I really thank you guys for your help. I think I'll start by getting a GOOD pair of running shoes. If you have any more tips for a newbie runner I'd love to hear them! Thanks again!

edit: hmmmm tart you mention a running store...I don't think we have anything like that in my area I'm in a pretty rural area. Like what would I look for in a running shoe?

I don't run, but these people give good advice, and I'm glad . . . my partner's boss had to get his knee replaced (and might have to get the other one) due to running on concrete and not being careful enough!

The stiffness in your knees could be a number of things. I would get them checked to make sure there isn't a major problem. It could be something as simple as tendonitis, especially if your runs have some hills in them. As someone suggested, try running on grass or a track.

Bursitis is an inflammation of the shoulder joint, not the knees.

Here's the thing to remember about stretching, and take this from a personal trainer. Yeah yeah I know, I'm lecturing. But a professional fitness trainer knows a lot about this kind of thing Esp since I've had exercise-related injuries myself in the past.

If you stretch when your muscles are cold, then that's like stretching cold taffy. Your best bet is do walk and warm up for about five to ten minutes BEFORE stretching. That way your muscles aren't stone cold before stretching.

The best running shoes I've discovered are the NIKE AIR MAX 360. It's sole is suited for a variety of ground: to the terrain you are on, whether it's a treadmill or a track or sand. They are pricey at 160 dollars plus, but they are the best shoes I have ever worn, and I've been running for years, since high school, when I did hurdles ( OUCH! Can't imagine doing them now).

Be sure you do at least see a sports medicine specialist about your knees if the pain won't go away. When you start out running certainly do things slowly and progressively. Running is a weird thing. Every day you add a little bit more, it gets easier and easier. Before I knew it I was running several miles. I've had to cut back because of the dancing though and because I live in a region that is about a mile in altitude.

I've cut back from 7 miles to half of that. I simply am setting myself up for injury with the stress my knees take from dancing in heels.

You can get it in your elbows, hips, and ankles too. I had a bout of it too when I ran X-country and still get it on occasion when I've over exerted myself after a period of inactivity. You can even get it by sleeping the wrong way.

If this pain lasts more than another week, I'd highly recommend getting to the doctor and see whats going on. And I can't stress the benefits of proper running shoes and stretching prior to running enough.

Hey thanks everybody for the tips. I purchased a proper pair of shoes today. They're Brooks with some sort of stability thing and gel stuff in the heel and toes and upgraded inserts. Just from trying them on the difference is amazing. The guy in the store scoffed when I showed him the shoes I had been running in so...after coupling the new shoes with some other tips you guys have shared we will see if there is any improvement.

I'm doing my first 5K tomorrow. Wish me luck!

That may be, but its odd how in my execise physiology classes that I took to get my degree, bursitis was almost exclusively a term used for the inflammation of the shoulder bursae. Perhaps because that's the most common bursae to become inflamed. The sports medicine doctor I go to doesn't refer to knee injuries or knee problems caused by running or other sports as bursitis.
