Default Where Are My Austin-ites At? I Need Some Advice Here!

So...there is a possibility the house deal we thought he had worked out will fall through- it seems the current owner decided to let it be foreclosed on instead of giving us an option to buy first. I could wait to see if I can get it, but I think we'll have issues with finance companies (and how much work it needs). Plus, I'm just sick of getting my hopes up and then having them come crashing back down right after. (For those of you that don't know, this is the second house we were planning on buying...the other deal fell through, too.)

So...I was talking with Mox yesterday, and he told me they (people from work) had been bugging him about transferring to Austin. They are having trouble keeping people around out there (in fact, his supervisor is going there in May to see if he can do better than the current management), and he would pretty much be handed a leadership position (what kind, he's not sure). It would mean more hours (which would = lots of over time) and a pay increase in the dollar amounts (not cents, I mean).

So anyway, we were talking about buying a house down that way...no big deal. I went to work today and was talking with my co-woker about the whole idea, and she said that my work was having trouble keeping steady help at their Georgetown location and they would probably transfer me without a second thought if I wanted to.

My main question is this, though... The equal distance between our two jobs would be Round Rock (literally, it's 10 miles to each of our jobs from there). What's the word on Round Rock? Good/bad? I know the cost of living is higher there than here, so I'm wondering if there are any alternative places anyone would suggest that would be better. I just want an idea of what we'd be moving to if we're planning on buying...we'd rent first, but I figure we'd run into problems having ferrets, a cockatiel, and parakeets (yes, yes...I know...I've heard it all before ).

Can someone from up that way give me info. about the area or ideas for what we should do? I'd most certainly appreciate it!

EDIT: I'm asking SWers because I don't really know anyone that lives in the Austin area. The only people I know are going to college, and they live in dorms or apartments near campus...not at all what I'm looking for.

Sorry, I don't know where you live now, but Austin rocks...

I've actually been considering going back there--it blows away this town with ease.

Round Rock I never spent much time in, can't tell you about that, except it seemed very suburban, which to me is a bad thing--but to each their own...

how important is it that both of your workplaces have an equidistant commute?

Eh...it's not THAT important, I guess. That was just the exact equal distance. I'm totally open to suggestions, though. I don't know that it'll even happen, but I'm just getting an idea since it's something we are considering (and we have no ties here...we were in the apartment and stuck in a lease the last time we considered it).

I'm about an hour North of Austin right now, by the way.

I just re-read your message, and suburban is what I've known my whole life. I've been a real chicken when it comes to moving away from home (I've lived in the same town my whole life), and I want something bigger than home (i.e.- more stuff to do, more restaurants, more stores) that still feels sort of like home. Does that make sense?

    Hell yes it does...

You'll love Austin, then--lots of cool clubs for every imaginable mood, great music scene, good restaurants, friendly people.

There are a lot of different kinds of houses and neighborhoods all around the city--I preferred the older homes with some character, but there's bound to be something that's right for you. Too bad the prices have gone up there.

Well we discussed this just a few minutes ago, but there are some good options north. Let me know if you need a realter referral, I know literally dozens who would love your business.

Djoser: Every time I've been to Austin for one thing or another I've totally loved it (besides the traffic, which I'm not used to). I think we'd fit in pretty well there...I would like the chance to "start over" so to speak. I live in a semi-small town where everyone knows your business, and they don't mind spreading it around and making you look like a fool if you've fallen on hard times. I would also like the chance to make some new friends because all my friends here have either stabbed me in the back or have gotten super busy with school (which I totally understand), so I'm stuck hanging out with Mox's guy friends all the time.

Kat: I talked to Mox about it a bit ago (that's where I went when I left), and we're really considering it. He's going to ask for a temporary work order to let him come to the Austin DC and try it out before we make any decisions. He also wants to get some advanced training from here first, so it might be the end of the summer or so before we make any moves. I'll get back with you once we get a little clearer picture of what we want to do. Thanks, though! I really appreciate it!

Deni, I think you'll like Round Rock better than where you are right now, since we're from the same area. Where you are... sucks.
Coincidentally, I'm moving to the middle of Austin the beginning of June.
Oh, and as a small-town girl who had to get used to Dallas traffic... it's doable. If I can do it, so can you.
    Good luck! :-)

Oh, and the gas is cheaper there than in North/Central TX, too. Always a plus.

I live downtown and I can tell ya it is pretty expensive. BUT...

North of 38th street starts getting a little dicey - the more north the worse off - until you reach into Round Rock which is a bit nicer.

Some parts Lamar goes through sucks but some parts are pretty nice and quiet.

East of 35 is said to be kinda rough but I haven't seen anything that horrible.

Austin Police have an awesome web site for getting the goods on what is going on where . I live in 78704 and while it looks bad on the numbers, I haven't felt unsafe.

Haha...sucks, huh? Tell me about it! The longer I'm staying here the more lack luster it's becoming. I've talked to Mox about it, and I'm working on convincing him a move would be good (he's not all for it). As far as traffic goes, I know I'd get used to it- it's just that I don't WANT to get used to it!

Deo: Thanks for the link. I'll be sure to check that out.

I lived east of I-35 for a while, north of the airport (unless they moved it after I left, lol), and it was pretty nice for a middle-class residential area.

South of the airport, I wouldn't mess with it...

Down around campus is great, but tends to be expensive.
