    Default Hustling or Lying?

I'm interested to know where the line between lying and hustling is in relation to stripping, if there is a line...

    Here's the scenario: You are the dancer working the floor, you chat up a customer and you tell him;
    your (stage) name
    your (fake) real name
where you're from (really or made up)
some backstory about yourself (real or made up)
    he's cute
    etc

When did you start lying? Would you tell all your real information just to feel you were honest? Why or why not?

The last thread I posted kinda inspired this as I am curious as to what the majority of posters here think Hustling really means...

My name and "cinammon" (not really my stage name) are 2 TOTALLY different people. The minute I walk into the club, and I start applying that makeup I'm "cinammon"

Customers who I sit with know:

    Stage name
Real name - which is also fake
Where I'm from - fake (but I also know the area well in case I get called out on it
Backstory - Nah, I mostly tell the truth when it comes to going to school.

In hustling, I'm selling a fantasy, that is my JOB! I've found (in my short exp) the ones who ask me all these questions really have no motive for buying dances but are more interested in asking me out. When I hustle, I sell a good time, and fun! It's all entertainment.

For my own protection, I tell nothing to a custy that could be traced back to find me outside the club. I have a stage name, a fake real name, I tell them I live in a different area, etc. Whenever they ask me something, instead of saying "none of your business" or anything like that, I'd rather keep it focused on the moment by telling them info but not my real info. I never say I have a sig other, but at the same time, when the date or number question comes along, I gently say no. But for the most part, all the info is prefabricated and easy to remember.
I don't think of it as a bad thing because I created this character or persona specifically for the club. Like CK said, I'm me out of the club, but in the club I'm the character. I do this b/c I like to keep my life outside the club separate from the club.
If this is considered lying then I'm a proud liar and I'll be alot safer because of it.

I don't usually outright lie, because I'm no good at it.

I tell vague truths (i.e. "what's a dance? Well, you go in here with me and we have a really good time") and stuff about me which is non-identifiable and sounds good.

I have a very different personality at work, though. :-)

Nothing wrong with this as BS'ing is part of the job (for all you know, his background story is likely to be exaggerated or hogwash as well). If it greases the wheels in order to make a sale its all good.

Just be sure you keep your story consistent, and make sure no other girls are using it. It amazed me how last time I was in Las Vegas, how many dancers there had traveled through my home state, and got a speeding ticket there from a really rude cop, which they never paid off.

    he's cute etc
Don't...unless he's really cute. Most guys know where they stand in such respects and know when you're BS'ing them. Find something genuine to complement them on.

xactly! You need to leave room for your personal life, its the only way to keep your sanity in a business like this.

The only two things that I on a regular basis lie about is, my "real" name and if I have a boyfriend.
Where I live is an hour away from the club. Most of the custies have never heard of my hometown anyways. I rarely get people that live in my hometown driving all the way there. I like to be more honest when I can.

When an actor on stage or in a movie they are performing, theyre doing theyre job for your entertainment. Just because theyre putting on an act doesnt make them liars and neither does it make you a liar when your hustling a customer with information that isnt necessarily true.

I find it difficult to lie about things to customers, therefore I tell everyone the truth. Not for moral reasons, but I don't want to get my stories mixed up!! What good is it going to do me when I tell one guy I'm from Florida and his friend that I'm from New York? I avoid any confusion and bad reputation by giving everyone the straight story.

There are things I won't talk about, however. Maybe I should lie about these things, but I don't find these topics to be appropriate for discussing with customers anyway.

The things I don't mention are:

my real name (I don't even have a fake one, I just avoid the question or change the topic...if he's dumb enough to ask, he doesn't deserve the truth)

my relationship status (although some of the club regs know about him - i don't care if they know because they never buy dances)

It's true, guys who want to know these things are looking for a date, not a lap dance. I find it's always best to lie about things that are more personal, but the details that are less personal are okay to be truthful about. If being honest about your hometown or your major in college bothers you, make sure you tell everyone the same thing. Develop a story and stick to it. If you've already been working at a club for more than a few days to a week, it would be too late to change your original story. Save a completely new personality for a new club.

Agreed! I have to admit, I've been waiting for someone else to say this b/c the last time I broched the topic, a couple people got huffy about it. Maybe I don't get the whole lie/truth thing because I've spent the majority of my life performing, but I think an act is an act, not a lie and anytime there is a stage involved, performance is key.

Lie, truth, who cares as long as it works for you & you're making money off of it.

i cant hide where i'm from due to a slight accent, but it's a city so good luck trying to find where i was at. plus if they're from the same area, we can have fun talking about all the neat stuff there.

i live in another city now. so it's no big deal to tell the truth- i really dont give off the burb or country bumpkin vibe anyways.

if i compliment someone, it's genuine. usually something about the eyes, hair, maybe something i learned by talking to them.

as far as my personal story, i dont say too much. i just mention silly things, like how i tried a new food or saw a movie.

I also have the accent, and I do lie about what part of the Northeast I'm from, occasionally I'll tell my real name, if a guy asks, sometimes I convince them my stage name is my real name, I'm not from Texas so lying is easy. I am in grad school, and lots of custies try to call me on it, when i start talking about my field, they know i'm not lying, and i don't really care...

I don't lie about my real name as my stage name is my real name. Goodness, if I had a dollar for every time a guy said "Yeh right, so what IS your real name?" I would be rich. Then again, I call THEM on being dis-believing.. "If you truely do not believe me, put $20 out on the table right now. I will go get my driver's license and prove to you that it is my real name."

Guess what... I have yet to have any takers. Seriously. I've been saying it alot and no one has called me on it!

Another way of getting around having to give out any information you would rather not tell is use the "secret" line... "Can you keep a secret??" *cheeky grin* of course he will say "yes".. and then you lean in (whispering in the ear is optional) to say "So can I!"

It humourous and avoids answering the question.

Otherwise, I do not lie about where I live (Gold Coast) nor the suburb (Surfers Paradise). Anyone who has seen pictures of Surfers Paradise will know that it has ALOT of units/apartments within it so it isn't 'easy' as such to track me down with just a suburb and first name to go on.

In re: backstory ... I will embellish just like any good story-teller. This is why I read alot of peoples' blogs online so I can acquire some stories to tell. This helps with the small talk as well as may make me seem more fun etc.

Generally, I do not lie. I may embellish or exagerate like any good story-teller ... however always base my stories on truth.

In the end, I keep it light. If I find the questions are too personal, I will say so.

Well you are lying if you say something that isn't true. Whether or not this is significant depends, in my opinion, on whether or not the lie is material or materially related to the service you are providing.
Significant: "I will completely blow you in the VIP" followed by "What? I never said that."
Insignificant: "My favourite colour is green."
Is the fact that your name isn't Deirdre, or you are not really a kindergarten teacher during the day, or you are in fact a size 6 not a size 4 materially interfering with the service the customer is enjoying? No? Then he has no legitimate complaints.

That being said - lying is completely over-rated as a sales technique. You may, as I do, indulge sheerly for fun. I just like constructing other lives for myself ("Yeah, I got into this 2 years ago, because I was homeless for about 2 months. Oh, don't worry, I'm doing okay now. I rent a nice trailer up in Mississauga." Any Toronto patrons heard that one? That was me. Totally made up.) I've even been completely caught a couple of times. Nobody seems to care. I laugh, confess. They laugh, buy dances. Generally it doesn't matter what you tell them, as long you tell it good.

Other than using a fake name I don't lie. I believe you can hustle without lying. It just takes a bit more energy.

Well, I would normally add another factor: the intent to deceive. Simply making a false statement does not constitute a lie.

Im not normally a fan of the 'special ethical arena' argument, but in the context of hustling for dances, Id go even further than the untrue+intent_to_deceive formula...and say it would have to be a malicious intent to deceive... like if you have a fake real name, for example, you are being deceptive and untrue, but not maliciously... strictly, you could call that a lie but I wouldnt...

I think that, as Jenny said, lying outright isn't something that you should do, especially about the BIG things like extras and OTC meetings and such. But, lemme put it to you how I do it- I will fudge, twist words, imply things, but I will NEVER outright tell them- sure you'll get laid. You're not lying if you tell them you'll give them a good time in the back. If their definition of a "good time" in the back is different than yours- it's not your problem! It's the same kind of technique used ALL the time by stores- they've got this big sign that says "50% off!!!" in BIG letters, but when you get closer, you see the fine print part says "up to"...same basic principle. So, unless they ask you directly- "will you fuck me?" I will say I'll give them the world- if it will get them in the back and money in my pocket- and isn't that why we're all dancers?
Age is only important when it comes to wine and whiskey!
