How do you blowdry? The easy way....

    Hey there,

I know that this sounds dumb....but how? I never used to do it, but now I have to for work and its always hit or miss.

Currently, I just filp over my hair, blow dry it and then put some creme in. It always looks weird I have pretty thick, shoulder-length wavy hair. I want it to look hot.

When I go to the hairdresser's they blow dry it flat and it looks great, but how do you do it yourself? What kind of brush, creme, etc. It needs to look classy and sexy at the same time.

Please help....what can I do to tame this unruly hair. lol

I spray in a light leave-in conditioner, and then usually use a volumizing spray on my roots and a heat-protecting spray on the rest of my hair and blow dry it straight. I just use a round brush and blowdry one section at a time. I don't blow dry upside down because then my hair looks too puffy.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

You should ask your hairdresser to show you how. It's not the kind of thing you can just read about; you learn through demonstration. And anyway if you don't like the look of a blow-dry, you don't have to have one. There's plenty of room for thick wavy hair. I have thick wavy hair too and I just shake the excess water out of mine, scrunch it, let it air-dry, and then once it's totally dry I brush it and apply some Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Finishing Cream. It looks great. The next day after I brush it, I just go over the ends with a curling iron and it looks good again. Very low-maintenance and better for your hair than regular blow-drying.

the flip over method works well to dry the roots of your hair and to achieve volume but you shouldn't blow dry your entire head like that. Just dry the roots then flip back over and finish off the rest by sectioning off with a paddle or large round brush. Your dryer should point down the cuticle shaft. (I use a hair clip to keep my hair out of the way while I dry my sections)

    Thanks so much ladies.

Yeah, I used to leave it to air dry with Bumble and Bumble grooming creme. Looked great, but just not sexy enough. I'll get some clips and a new brush, perfect.

Here's how I do mine, although it might not work the same for someone else. I have semi-thick naturally wavy hair. First I shampoo and condition, then I put it up in a towel at the end of my shower. After I'm done putting lotion all over my bod, I take the towel off and apply Kiwi Blow Serum which helps detangle and smooth your hair while you blow dry.....then i smooth in just at the ends of my hair Matrix Sleek Look EXTREME styling Creme.....then again just at the ends I smooth on a dab of Redkens Smooth Down HEAT GLIDE serum. (THis is all PRE blow dry) I know I know, I use a lot of product, but we're not DONE yet!!!

After I let my hair air dry for about 20 min I then proceed to turn on straightner and get my blow dryer. For Volume I use Redkens BODY FULL WEIGHTLIFTER just at my roots RIGHT before I actually blow dry. Then I set to work with Blow drying......I do the very underneath sections first, then the top, which I brush back and help smooth it out. About mid way into blow drying I use Redkens FORCEFUL aerosol spray. I just mist it all over (NOT very much) then finish blow drying. I use my paddle brush to not only lift my roots while I'm blowdrying, but to pull the ends straight like they do at the salons.

AFTER I blow dry, I spray a little more FORCEFUL in and use my straightner to get some UBER sleek looking hair, but yet it still has volume! I tend to do my hair like Angeline Jolie when she has it slick back away from her face, but yet she has TONS of volume.

(What I love about the NEWEST line from Redken (like the FORCEFUL aerosol and WORKFORCE which is the VOLUMIZING aerosol....) is that it not only WORKS really well.....but it makes hair look sleek once you've used a straightner on it......AND it protects from humidity!)

Also.......when I blow dry, I brush my hair from side to side, like I'll spend some time on the left side and brush it and blow it towards the right to get volume, then switch sides, then at the very end I'll brush it straight up and aim the blow dryer at just my roots.....works like a charm

ALSO, My hair is REALLY long.......like when I have it swept around the front of me, it covers my nipples and then some.....that's why I use so many diff products......keeps my hair in top notch condition!!!!!!

Here's a pic of me......granted this is LATE into the night at the club, so it's a little flat....but it gives a general idea to how long my hair is.....and the fact that all the styling is worth it cuz this is prolly 10 hours after I styled it.....and at least I think it still looks pretty good!

and the other one.....you can KINDA see how long it is.....really these pics don't do justice.....it's REALLY long.....and when I start to get sweaty and yucky from dancing it starts to turn wavy which you can kind of see......I really hate my hair sometimes!

    Hey,

The way I do it to make it sleek but still have volume is this, (Similar to fiery fox but not quite) :

Once I hop out of the shower, I keep my hair in a towel while I do my makeup and get it semi-dry.
From there, I comb it out and apply a tiny bit of smoothing creme...I use one the Joico ICE one.
Flip your head over and blowdry *focusing* on the roots but also do some drying of the rest of the hair...I usually flip my hair down and blowdry for about 30 seconds and then flip my hair back up and do 30 seconds...alternating so that I still get the volume from having my head flipped over the the rest doesn't get poofy.
Then, when my hair is about 80% dry I turn off the dryer, brush it out and section up the top of my hair. I use a large round boar bristle brush and take sections of hair, curl them on the brush until its tight to my scalp <--Then I blowdry the section for a few seconds and pull the brush down smoothing the section. Do all this until you've done your entire head this way...at the crown of my head I pay special attention to getting as much volume as possible.
When that is all said and done you should have tons of volume but its going to be a bit on the poofy side, so that's what the straightener is for.
Ignoring your roots, just quickly run about 2/3's of your strands with the straightener to make them sleek.
This way you'll have mega volume but minus the poof.

Holy crap! So much work! lol....Thanks again ladies!

I'm just not used to such a procedure, so it seems pretty intimidating so far. But tommorow, I'm going to try it all out.

Fiery Fox, you have the greatest hair. It looks fantastic! That's what i want my mane to look like, but blonde. It's naturally blonde so I have to be so careful....all the highlighting in my life has damaged it quite a bit, and now the blowdryer as well.

Thanks for the help.... now, I have to attempt it myself...scary.

I blow dry and round brush like Tiff does. You may want to ask your stylist for some pointers, or at least watch him very carefully.

Tools that help me with a fantastic blowdry- Marilyn brushes!!! Especially the Thermal Red. Its a reinforced boar bristle brush with a ceramic barrel. Boosts shine & volume without frizz. Matrix's Lift Trix mousse for a lift at the scalp and Paul Mitchel's Quick Slip or Round Trip. Use them mid shaft to ends to cut drying time, boost shine, & provide hold.

I just flip my hair over and get it 80%-90% dry before applying product or attempting to round brush. I also dry on high heat.

When the section that your drying is dry, use your brush as a hot roller (that's why a quality brush that's the appropriate size for your hair length is important). Roll it down to the scalp and use your cool shot to set the volume.

GET A CONCENTRATOR. This will make blow drying the back more manageable. It won't blow the hair in a zillion different directions while you are trying to smooth one section. Just start on one side and the underneat layer and use the largest round brush you can find that is suitable for your hair length. (My hair is not even to my shoulders and I use a 5" brush, it's HUGE.) Then wrap your hair around it and keep the brush in place until you have gotten it almost dry. Then start pulling the brush and re-wrapping it to get the cuticle smooth.

It's tedious but will give you a much smoother finish.

OH, my hair use to be PAMELA blonde about a year and a half ago!!! Then I went dark, so i'm sure the ends are still all damage!!! I use quite a bit of conditioner!

AND- after letting my hair airdry for about 20 min, it usually only takes me about 10 min to blow dry! I use the brush at the very end when it's almost completely dry. Otherwise to start I just kind finger comb and move it around in all directions as I dry it. Really all in all along with my other regular routines such as scrubbin my body and puttin lotion on and all, I'd say from the start of my shower, til I'm done straightening, it takes me ABOUT 45minutes to shower, sit and wait, blow dry and straighten. Don't forget I let my hair sit untouched for like 20 min, while it's air drying I do other stuff, so id say without airdrying all in all it'd take me about 20-25 minutes if my hair was SHORT!

Mine takes about the same time...about 20 minutes to do a proper blowout...and I have just barely shoulder length hair...BUT: My hair is insanely, breaks hair elastics, actually weighs several pounds thick.

And...i've noticed that since I made it short, with shorter layers and everything its more fussy and actually takes me longer, not necissarily longer to dry, but longer to make it look nice.

    Good luck and happy blowing!!

I am actually in cosmetology school and I can tell you one of the best things you can do for a good blow out is get a good blow drier. The one I have is by chi, you can get it at pure beauty, it's over 150$$ tho! Just make sure you have a ceramic barrel ionic drier inless you want a damaged do. So I put a drop or two of some sort of serum, such as biosilk silk therapy or bed head girl toys, rub it thru my hair and use a low temp and finger comb intill about 75-80% dry. Then I take a round boar hair brissel brush and dry the crown, back, and ends of my hair and a flat brissel brush on the front of my hair that I want flat and straight. Then I take a drop of finishing creme and a drop of serum work it in my palms and work it thru my hair. Take a straightener or curiling iron to the spots that need to be tamed and perfected and finally the finished product. Take a volumizing hair spray such as redken inflate # 1 to keep things in check. You can probably find a simpler way of doing things, but this is my ritual to having every hair in place.
