    Default Movie Director's Statement

If you remember the movie "Dancing at the Blue Iguana" one of the director's comments(while playing the movie with the comments on), he said that according to "studies", 85% of club dancers have been sexually abused in their young age. I dont think this is true or accurate; anyone knows about this"study", or it is just bluff?

Why is everyone attempting to study the dancers and not the customers? Seems these experts are looking to exploit.

It would be very hard to conduct a study like that. So many different backgrounds and kinds of people in the business...You would have to have a HUGE sample size to get anywhere near a clear picture.

Considering the controversial nature of the subject, I believe that the majority of sex "studies" are bluff.

Even when they are methodologically well done, people with a less than stellar reputation tend to out of context the results in order to fit their agenda, knowing full and well that their general audience will likely believe their statistics at face value. Propaganda flies a lot faster than truth.

I really depends how questrions are worded. If someone asked me "were you molested as a child?", I'd say no. If someone said "Do you feel you were ever taken advantage of sexually while under the age of 18", well, I'd have to say yes.

I expect whoever collected those stats probably phrased it more like the latter.

It's a movie about strippers that portrays us as dumb airheads. Not only does it view us as a negative stereotype, its also just a crappy, stupid movie.

I was never molested, but I was often accused of it by various psychiatrists when I was a kid. In our society, any female with a high sex drive or a high comfort level with sexual behavior for its own sake is presumed to be damaged, usually through molestation.

The movie was awful, I don't even think I finished it.

The one thing I think I remember it had going for it was that it at least didn't have some weird psycho killing the dancers (or did it? I don't remember it, at least), and thus buying into the common horror/stripper movie tenet, sex=death.

Its not just how the questions in the studies are worded but also the interpretations given to the answers. If its not just "yes" or "no" answers then there is room for the people making the study to shade their interpretation of the an answer so that it fits their own views.

Also, how were the participants in the study selected?

One of the worst all-time jobs I had was as for a telephone survey company. The participants could by no means be described as a typical cross-section, since the typical person being called would immediately hang up the phone, if you were lucky without being pretty f*cking rude in the process--not that I blamed them all that much.

The things we do for love...

Other surveys have other methods of selection, often subject to similar faulty criteria.

Furthermore the phrasing of the questions often left a lot to be desired, in spite of severely anal dedication to ensure the lack of 'leading'--that is eliciting a certain kind of answer.

Then we get to the interpretation, which is even more subject to questionable academic method.

So Jannisary's point is a good one.

Cool name, BTW--not too many people even know what a Janissary was, but that is the first time I have seen it spelled that way. It does refer to the elite Turkish military body composed initially of Christian slaves, correct?

I really liked that movie, and I've come across lots of dancers like that. I really think there was one normal girl in the movie, and the rest were crazy and had issues. That's been rather congruent with my observations over the years. Of course we all remember the wild and unrealistic parts of the story.

Everyone I have ever told I dance has assumed I've been molested. I am an attention whore though and always have been....

I enjoyed the movie, but I did see it before I started dancing. Should watch it again to see if my opinion is the same.

I was not molested nor taken advantage of sexually before the age of 18. I didn't even kiss anyone until I was 19 (late bloomer--making up for it now). I think this is just another steroetype for dancers. Also, I think that if one were to ask the general female population, they would get similar statistics--a surprising number of (regular and dancer) girls have very sad stories.

I've seen the movie a few times. I was very impressed with how much they got down pat. Certainly all clubs are not like that. It was a good thing for me because it reminded me of many clubs I worked when I was starting out. All those quirky, lost, earnest, and just plain fucked up girls and guys. So full of life and tragedy at the same time but not letting it stop them. Good indie, slice of life movie.

None of these studies are done on male dancers. They're job is ok but ours isn't.
