Default how many times a month to the chiropractor is too much?

I was taught not to go to the chiropractor more than once a month. I went last week, and while I don't feel like there's a crick in my neck or back, I ache all over. I don't think a massage's effects would last as long, so I'm considering going to the chiropractor tomorrow. I'll be working a lot this next month so I'm wondering if I should just do it once a week.

What do you girls do? How often do you go? Any other suggestions? Another dancer suggested cranio-sacral therapy....any news on that?

Oy, this is the second night I'm not going to be working because my body feels like crap--and I think it has more to do with the cigarette smoke... I drink a lot of water, and chomp on Vitamin C, and my legs don't hurt at all (which they normally do when I've overworked them), but the entire back and shoulders and neck feel all tight, achy, and otherwise icky. I'd rather get an adjustment once a week and not skip work from feeling this uncomfortable.

OMG! I go whenever I can! You can definatly go more than once a month..If you're trying to fix something, then you should be going 2-3 times per week for a few weeks, then start tapering it down..

    I LOVES me chiro! lol

After my car accident a few years ago I was going 4 times a week, then 3. I'm still supposed to be going now, but my insurance changed and my new insurance doesn't cover my chiro.

During this last month of my pregnancy I've seriously gotten a massage once a week! I've NEVER spoiled myself like that before, but it has been so heavenly. I'm thinking of doing the cranio-sacral thing also. I'll let you know if it's good, if I have it before you. I agree with sassy though, I think if you can, go as much as possible. Also dancing is so ridiculously hard on our bodies that I think we all should put aside part of our incomes to get body work done. We'll be better for it in the long run. When I start dancing again I'm definately going to take better care of myself than I did before.

It's funny though--I've been working these past couple of weeks and I've not been straining my body (in my opinion, as before normally my legs/knees/and back would normally hurt like a mutha) as much....aaargh, so I'm blaming it on sleep disruption, the damned cigarette smoke, and whatever physical stuff that isn't obvious-- I WISH I'D GONE TO MY CHIROPRACTOR TODAY!!! Then I wouldn't be taking my second night off. ARGH!

I used to go three times a week. Never seemed to hurt me.

I went to a chiropractor who wanted me to go three times a week. I think it was because at the time I had good insurance. I say do pilates. That's helped my back more than any chiropractor I've ever been to.

Funny, last time I hurt myself and had to go to the chiropractor, it was from DOING pilates lol. I went 3 times a week, then tapered to 2 times, then down to once a week, and I don't go anymore. You can definitely go in again.

well, I learned pilates with one instructor and it helped my back. Then she moved away and I started with another studio and despite the fact that they were "certified" my back did hurt then and I didn't get the same results. The Method is only as good as its teacher.

I actually know someone who was in a car accident and pilates is what healed her back. I'm not saying chiro's are totally full of shit but I have yet to be convinced.

I've had really good luck with chiropractors. I had one really bad session with one guy, but other than that, I've had three great doctors--and I really do feel better after each one. So-- definitely get referrals.

Chiropractors tend to cost between $40 and $50 (less if there's a student discount), and you go once a month for upkeep (I have scholiosis), and more (I guess) if you are doing body-busting activities.

maybe it depends on the chiro just as it depends on the pilates instructor. If it's helping you stick with it!

one lady who was in my pilates class had scoliosis and since she started pilates it stopped her spine from curving anymore. But like I say, it depends on the instructor I think.

At one stage I was going to see my Chiropractor 3 - 4 times a week every week. I guess this was about 2 -3 years ago. At first people often need to go fairly frequently but then the visits reduce. Currently I go somewhere between 1 -2 times a month to 4 -6 visits a month. When I have a break from dancing I need to go much less if I do alot of dancing then I often throw something out. After a while you can just tell exactly what's out where and you know when you need to go (-:

I've been reading that it's good to go to the chiropractor...but only on occasion. Having your back adjusted too much will cause to much "dependence" (that's not the word I'm looking for, but it'll have to do for now)...if you are needing to go a lot, there is something else going on. Your body should be as "doctor" free as possible. Are you back muscles weak? Do you over work your abdominal muscles and neglect your back muscles? Is your step off? Most people don't know this, but having one leg just a fraction or millimeter of an inch shorter will cause your back to constantly go out of place. Getting specially made insoles will correct the problem.

In short, if you are finding that you are needing your back adjusted frequently...there's something else going on that needs to be addressed.

I was actually told by my fam doc that chiropractors make you dependent on them. They adjust your back to relieve you for a little bit then you have to go back. Its an addiction. I prefer acupuncture and massage therapy... the relife is much longer lasting. Worse case physio therapy works wonders as well because they teach you exercises to help relieve the pain and make your back stronger.

Thanks for answer. I guess $40 -$50 per session x a few vitis a month isn't too bad. ( although I know it's not cheap for normal people like for my friends example)

Out of curiosity - what was the one bad experience you have had? are you okay now?

Cally-- okay, that's a BAD chiropractor. My good chiropractors tell me to try to stretch it out to once a month unless I crick something the wrong way; they're the ones that have warned me against going to a chiropractor more than once a month which is why I was getting all lame about going this week since I'd just gone last week.

As for the bad experience, I moved and waited and waited and waited and finally couldn't take it anymore. I went to one chiropractor and she was okay, but a little too hippie for me. Plus I didn't feel like she was aggressive enough (I know, not a good sign for someone overly aggressive, but after awhile you know if they've missed something.) So, I waited and waited again and finally looked one up in the phone book. I asked if he did the type of chiropractoring I needed him to do (there's several methods: Palmer, Gonstead, Applied Kinesiology.) He did the type so I agreed to meet him at his office, and it was seriously a one room business office. Like-- no reception area. Only him just inside the door reading a book, and I was like, ummmm, okay--I'll just try him anyways. Bad idea. Once again, one of those situations where I wished I'd listen to my intuition.
So, he adjusted me, but there's several ways to adjust the midback. He tried one way and it didn't work, so instead of turning me over and doing it the other way, he just did it again...HARDER. I had tears in my eyes it hurt so bad. I actually had to wipe my eyes- and I am not a cryer.
I cried in the car on the way home because I felt so bad. I cried in my house as I called my old chiropractor and asked how could I find a good one (he told me that my back had to be arranged with a specific move and that this guy was just lazy and trying to be over efficient.)
So I felt like shit for two days (and after I'd spent my $40) before talking to the chiropractor JUST BELOW HIM in the phone book (I'm a complete idiot, I should have trusted my gut instinct) and things have been fine. She could see that I was in a lot of pain, and adjusted me.

And, for the wary, I've been to six chiropractors in my life. Two have been utterly fantastic, one's been really good, two have been mediocre but sufficient, and one has been horrible.
So-- don't get discouraged, and if you can, get references!

I went to a chiropractor when I started dancing who was great. He was very honest with me and told me I wouldn't need to see him at all if I just strengthened my muscles and stretched. So he gave me some stretching exercises, told me to do some weight training and swimming, and highly recommended yoga. I haven't been as dilligent with exercising as I should be, but it does help. When I feel something is out of place, stretching can really help.

I had scoliosis as a kid. Beware of chiros that tell you that you'll need extensive treatment for a prolonged period of time -- i.e., 3x/week for 2+ years. They're just going for your wallet. A good chiro will treat your symptoms while you have them and then stop treating you when the symptoms are gone. Just like any other doc, he's there if you get symptoms again along the road.

Do take care to strengthen and stretch. Pilates is great for that. If your muscles are strong enough to support your back, but flexible enough to deal with the kinds of movements you do as a dancer, you won't throw your back out as much.

I'm sure you guys know this, but pilates was invented as a rehabilitation for injured dancers -- what better way to supplement your chiropractic treatments?

Also another thing to consider (and I don't know how common this is) but I knew someone with implants who was dating a chiropractor and when he adjusted her back he fucked up her implant somehow. I think it sort of tore loose or something, not sure really, but she was in a lot of pain for a while. So if you have implants that could be a risk I guess.
