My roommate is having a conversation...

    ...with my cat.

They're both large, grumpy males sitting in my kitchen. The cat is meowing at him, and my roommate keeps answering him. I can't believe I'm listening to this.

    "MEOW!"
    "Mm-hmm."
    "MEOW!"
    "Really? Then what?"
    "MEOWWWW!"
"Oh my. I bet that pissed you off."
    "MEOW."
"Well, you know what I always said about people like that..."
    "MEOW!"
    "That's right."

This has been going on for about five or ten minutes and they're still going.

I do that with my cats all the time. Maybe it's a large grumpy male thing.

I used to talk to my one cat all the time, but it wasn't grumpy.

She had a really cute little way of answering, she knew we were talking, and liked it.

Sometimes she would coo, like a pigeon sound--it was really sweet. I still miss that cat, damn it...

aw, now I feel like going down to my friendly (I'm lying those people suck, but the cats are cool) humane society and getting me a cat.

LOL! I do it too, and it is funny. I just never listened to anyone else doing it before. These guys have no idea how silly they sound. Eventually my roommate finished cooking breakfast and took it upstairs... the cat followed him. I wonder whether old Brando is more interested in the conversation or my roommate's bacon and eggs.

    Definitely the bacon and eggs.

The current cat is quite a talker. She wouldn't shut up this morning. Living in New York we are short on space so I use bins under the futon to keep my socks and undies. I woke up to find my socks scattered all over the living room, bathroom, and bedroom.

    I have conversations with cats.

    "Get down!"
    "Quit scratching!"
    "It's not suppertime yet!"

    And so on.

Don't think twice about what guys say. They talk even more to their inanimate cars.

I always have conversations with kitties.. the cat is simply trying their best to interact however they know how and they seem to enjoy "feeling" like they are suddenly part of the family unit that way.

Happier pets are always those ones that are validated just like part of the family, despite any language or social barriers that may truly prevent that.

I'm back from Vegas, got back yesterday. Bf is still out there working on his thing though. We share a two-bedroom apartment with another guy... this is the latest of a long string of roommates we have. And however quirky, at least this one pays his rent on time!

I believe it has been more or less scientifically proven that animals, while they may be quite unaware of the sentence structure, vocabulary, etc. in human attempts to communicate, definitely respond to tone of voice.

In short, they can read emotions. They know if you like them. They know if you are pissed off. They know if you are trying to tell them you are sorry they hurt.

    It's always worked for me...

Also, I think I recall hearing or reading that wild dogs don't bark so much as domesticated ones.

There's not much doubt in my mind that barking and meowing, directed at humans, are attempts to communicate with us.

I like this, except when being warned "HEY! THIS IS MY YARD YOU ARE WALKING NEXT TO!" for the zillionth time.

OTOH, if bacon and eggs are added to the equation, their concern for our emotional state vis a vis their own tends to be radically decreased--except to the extent we might be moved to give them some. Not much science necessary there, lol...

LOL! And yes, they can definitely communicate, even without speech. I used to have a cat that would always curl up with me when I cried; she would put her paw on my shoulder and lick my face like mother cats do for their kittens. It always made me feel better, which I'm sure is what she meant to do.

Interesting tidbit... cats don't meow unless another cat shows them how.

There is a great book called "When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Life of Animals"

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/038...lance&n=283155

It gets into this quite a bit, and is a great book, quite interesting for anyone into this stuff.

However, I must warn you that there is one chapter that you might not want to read, since it is replete with tales of dogs trying to dig up their master's grave, dolphins starving themselves to death after their lover dies, and all manner of awful tales of self-destruction and abject misery that some of these poor critters put themselves through.

I actually had to stop reading this book, it was that bad. But it's around somewhere, so I'll be finishing it eventually.

    "What buddy?."
    "MEOW!"
    "You can't?"
    "MEOWWWW!"
"Go take a nap or bath. You will feel better."
    "MEOW!"
"I know it's sooooooooo tough being a cat!"

My dogs get lots of talking too, but nothing really intelligent. Mostly it's just chatter. Though the husky gurgles back a bunch the most out of all of them.

A couple of times when I came home drunk I made the biggest fuss over her--like she was a goddess--praising her divine glory, waxing ecstatically on the perfection of her beauty, promising to sacrifice oxen and goats the next day, etc., etc.

She was so funny watching me--you could just see her thinking "You are one strange fucking guy when you are drunk..."
