Angry A question for the DJ's about tipping

Ok DJ's... I have a question.... here's a quick background. The club I work at has been going through a lot of changes the last few months (renovating, new managers, new staff, etc.). Some of this has caused us to lose a large customer base, but it is slowly coming back. We are also located out in the middle of nowhere Tennessee. Most nights the girls are lucky to take home $50-$60 after paying house fees (for an 8 hour night). There are many nights that I have made less, but due to loyalty and convience I am staying put. So here's the problem. Because of this, the girls just don't have the funds to tip the DJ, or if they do it is very little. Trust me, we all feel badly about this and wish we could tip... it's just everyone if really strained right now. The DJ does get paid by the house, I'm not sure how much, but I am sure it is more than we are making right now. So anyway, our DJ was so mad Friday night that he didn't get tipped, that when he came back Saturday he refused to play any of the music we requested (at our club we pick the music for every set), or encourge tipping from the crowd, etc. to teach us a lesson. He also said some very nasty things about the girls over the system (we're a bunch of stripper whores and so on). We don't need a lesson... we just need some understanding. So, is this how you as a DJ would handle this situation, or would you understand the dillema the girls are in? What do you suggest?

Not yet... the problem is that we are so remote (about an hour and a half from Nashville, and hour from Huntsville, and three and a half hours from Memphis) that we have a VERY hard time finding DJ's that will work for the pay the club can offer them right now. I'm sure later they will be able to offer a competitive pay, but not right now.

Just wondering...how many girls work on these nights? If there are 20 girls working and you all tip him $5, he walked with $100 for one night...if there are 10 and he got tipped $5, he's walking with $50...

I cannot believe he didn't get fired for what he did. He may be mad, but that just made the club look bad. Shame on him!!

Oh, and did you all tip him well when you did well? Has anyone told him that you all are going through a slump and when your money picks up, so will his?

$50-60 take home after house isn't enough to tip a dj with in my opinion. You need to go home with enough in your pocket to put gas in your car, food on your table etc.

I suggest the girls all go to management as a group and complain. This Dj is unproffessional, immature and gives the rest of the hard working Djs a bad name. When I was djing I had a simple rule, if you busted your ass to make money, but it wasn't there to make... you didn't tip me.

Generally we have about 7 girls during the week and 10 on the weekend. This DJ just started about 2 weeks ago, so he has only seen the club at its worst. When we were doing well all the girls tipped the previous DJ everynight about $15-20. And yes we told him we would tip when things got better, but it seems like he just doesn't care. He used to DJ in the 'city' and I guess he just expects tips no matter what.

He's an asshole, and should be fired. Immediately. That's just one of those things you don't do on the mic. And yeah, like Blade said, you can't get blood from a stone. I watch the room, I know what's going on. I don't expect a cut of nothing, that's just rude. The only time I bitch about tipout is when I know a girl consistently makes money and asks for shit constantly and never tips. That's a completely different story. Did he actually call you "whores" on the mic and he didn't get a shoe to the head? Wow. He "used to work in the city". Hmmm. So we can assume that means he no longer does....gee, wonder why?

It's not just assholish, it's completely counterintuitive and stupid and took money out of his own pocket as well as yours. Where were the managers when this was going on??? ...sounds like it's time for a club meeting.

Yeah I have always had a rule that if a dancer makes only 50-60$, I don't want a dime. There's a mandatory 7$ tip per girl at my club, but I won't take it if they didn't make shit.

Consequently, even though the manager has actually told the dancers not to tip more than 7$, I regularly get 10-45$, though certainly not from all of them, and I have always been the highest tipped DJ in Daytona (per girl--the guys in the big factory club with 100 girls get more in total).

The guy should be strung up by his thumbs for doing what he did...

    Hmmm...

Well this guy is definatly a dick and not worth his pay. But unfortuatly you are caught in a catch 22. A club that size with that payscale on the outskirts will not be able to find a dj that is decent for that little pay. Sad to say, a guy like that though brings the whole club down, and i am sure they could at least find something better. At my current club we make 10% for the most part, which works out good. If a girl has a bad night I will let her slide. The 10% works good cause if they do good you do good, if they do bad you do bad. (The 10% caps at 35 before you dj bashers start on me

Your DJ should be more understanding, and since he has only been there for 2 weeks should still be getting used to things and not demanding things that you cant provide.

I'm sure when things get better the tips would come his way and if he's treated you with respect and worked with you rather than against you, his tips would be greater. We have a mandatory $5 tip from our showgirls and its part of my pay structure, but i've not accepted it at times because the dancer had a bad nite. Plus if i work my ass off for them and help them make money from the stage, they tip me more. At times i've been stack so my tips were minimal. And i can only blame myself.

If some of you girls have tried to speak to him and explained that if he's patient when things get better you will get his tips, and this hasn't worked. Then take it straight to management, hopefully they will sort him out

In the end it boils down to trust. ANYONE who has been in this biz for awhile knows that people lie about what they do and the amount they make. I always tried to take the high road and give girls the benefit of the doubt, but when you have had someone come into to booth crying about making no money, borrowing money from the heartless bastard DJ that you are, and then find out the next day that girl actually made $700, you sooner or later get very sick out it. Trust and respect are earned. Something I have noticed is that the people who post, share, and actually use the knowledge contained in this awesome site
are the ones who actually tend to care about what they do, not just for themselves but the
good of all involved. In the clubs ( Real World), unfortunely there are those that only give a
shit about themselves and it can get to you when you have been screwed over enough. I agree that the name calling over the mike was uncalled for and unprofessional, but maybe
there is more to this story??? I agree with the post about some of us all getting together and running a damn good club!

Yep, some girls do lie about what they make to get out of tip-out....which is f**ked up.

Mandatory tipout for DJ is $10. in my club(along with $30. shift pay, for the just-in-case). If you as a dancer made 700. on one night (great 4 u) then.... Hello? Hold back $40-$50 a week for your dj, he works his ass off for you. And if he isnt, then he should be or, you as the dancer, need a pep talk. Some songs dont work with some crowds, ya know. He should help you choose one that will work for the crowd.

I hate seeing a DJ sheet where the girls tipped 0-5. WTF? Sometimes I think I want to collect it from the door before they even walk in....but that might cut the $20-40 they do give on certain nights, but not all girls "make up for it". We tend to get rid of the ones that cant make themselves money, or anybody else....what are they there for then? (we train and give tips to hustle)

Trust me, I feel for you dj's sometimes if you have what they/management ask for (music selection)...if you dont, you need internet connection...and wierd but a lot of dj's dont have internet connection and their selection sucks. Before I hire it's; "hey, do ya have a high-speed modem and a burner?" If not, ya need it.

    Ya know.
