    Holding own weight on pole

What is the best way to build up your muscle to be able to lift your own weight on the pole?

    Actually, it's doing pole work.

You just keep practicing on pulling yourself up on the pole.

You can also do workouts with weights: Chest flys, bench press, tricep extension, bicep curls, etc, etc, etc.

Don't forget to workout the lower body as well. As much as pole work looks like an upper body workout, it strongly uses the legs and abdominal muscles as well!!

close grip lat pulldowns was the closest exercise that i could get to the movement of pulling yourself up but that was for a pole that the club had painted over so i couldn't use my legs really b/c they would just slip...on regular poles you use your legs a lot more

VG is right, practice makes perfect.

I have taught many a newbie, and the best thing to do is to not be afraid of the damned thing--find a trick or two you feel comfortable with, and work from there. The more you do it, the easier it gets...

The lat puldowns are probably a good idea, as well as the abdominals--but don't neglect your lower back as this plays an important role too.

Djoser, I just lovethat you're so knowledgeable about the pole! How did you come to this, as sort of a hobby while DJing at the club? I wish I could get some tutoring from you. Hell, I'd come see your own pole show any day! Do they ever feature you as a special event?

Another thing that I did to build up my upper body strength was "dead lift" my own body on the pole.

Grap the pole up high, then just pull your body up and hold it for a count of 10, then SLOWLY come down.

    And practice practice practice!

Well, here's a question to add to that... will losing weight help? I can already support my weight and do a good amount of advanced tricks, but I bet it would probably be a bit easier if I was a bit lighter (primarily in the legs since that's where all of my weight is). Would that be true, or is it wishful thinking?

yes, losing weight will help, because it's less weight to lift. BUT, if you don't strengthen the muscles, it will still be difficult.

sassysummer, I do that too. I have a pole in my bedroom and every so often I'll walk by and just try and lift myself on it. I can barely do it and I also lift weights in the gym so it's not easy at all. There are so many pole tricks that look so easy and I can't seem to get so I think a lot of it is learning positioning.

No way! If I were a guy and went to a stripclub and they put a GUY up there, I'd be looking for a gun, lol...

I won't do anything unless there aren't any guys there, which means never in my club, except the very end of the night after closing once in a while.

I'm going to be going in early to show a new dancer named Awesome (I know, dumb name, but she's a sweetheart, and this is Daytona--actually I say "She's living up to her name tonight, guys..." on the mike to make her feel good) a few tricks, probably tomorrow.

The way I learned was by having a pole in my living room for a while. Kind of hard to resist playing on the damned things...

Once in a while you'll run into a dancer who feels it's unmanly, but since I'm not trying to be sexy (I view it as a challenge more than anything), I really don't give a damn...

Most seem to take it for what it's worth--fun and possibly instructive.

When guys are on the subway really late, like coming home from a club drunk, I see them do pole tricks a lot while their friends are laughing and saying, "I don't have any dollars to tip you." It's funny more than anything.

Yeah, keep me away from anything like that when I'm drunk, lol.

I was like that before I ever learned tricks, though--especially on tequila--I start wanting to climb buildings and shit.

It's been a while since I drank tequila, but Rachel owes me a fifth (long story), so who knows...
