If this has already been posted, perhaps it's not a bad idea to revive it. I have an almost fool proof way to over come a nasty cold bug, just make sure you don't have any allergies to this stuff before you try it.
At the first sign of sickeness (i usually wake up one day feeling slow with a tiny itch in the back of my nose/throat, or i'll sneeze 50 million times a day for no reason) you should start taking an herb called Eccinacea. The best to take is the Eccinacea and Goldenseal combination pill, both are sold at any pharmecy. I always pick up the highest dose per pill and take two, three times a day or three, two times a day. you should also be taking a daily vitamin, i like the Olay energy packs. Do this untill the cold has left you completely!!
I like to eat like i'm a bear going in to hibernation. I'll eat steak, lots of pasta, plenty of chiken and eggs, fruit, anything rich in vitamins and protien. Its my going to Outback and Olive Garden week...lol
Since the inevitable congestion will happen, the moment phlegm begins, i sleep with a heavy layer of vicks on my chest. I usually take a hot bath with sandlewood and patchouli oils, then layer it on thick and keep a hand towel over the vicks'd area and sleep on my back. The vicks seeps into your chest while you sleep helping to break up all the congestion and stuff. Immediately hit the shower when you wake up. No baths, let the vicks reactivate and cough your ass off if you must while you wash it off. I've considered trying those new shower pucks with vicks in them. Trust me, though it smells really really bad, it works. Do this every day till there is no more phlegm.
Stock up on the Halls 100% vitamin C cough drops. I like the assorted flavors.
Make hot green tea sweatened with honey part of your daily routine. Home made is best. I find Liptons has the best tea bags.
Also drink lots of V8s and fruit juices. Drink sweetened water if tap is less than tastey..
Last but not least: CALL IN! if you take just one day to lay in bed and let it work it will save you from having to miss half the week from getting yourself really sick.
If you follow these steps and make them part of your daily routine while you are sick, down time can be as little as two days. the longest I have had to endure a cold while doing this was 3 days. I usually don't miss more than one day of sick time. My step mother and her daughter were both music majors/dramma queens (in the true theatrical sense) and were not allowed down time. I have learned that this combonation makes you get better faster. The only way to prevent a cold is healthy life style and the flu shot. Since i don't take the shot, i rely on my boosted immune system to keep me healthy but in the club, colds happen.
I hope you find this helpful for the next time the dreaded cold hits your home. It can be tweaked of course but the herbs and vicks are what really do the work. I'm not saying you have to eat like i do, but if you do make sure it has lots of iron and healthy protiens.
Again i appoligize if someone else has posted this method or a very similar one, but it has helped me get through many a flu season and just might help you.
Piper
