    (Looted from StudentAid.ed.gov)

You’re an independent student if at least one of the following applies to you:

    You are 24.

You’re married as of the day you apply (or separated but not divorced).

You are or will be enrolled in a master’s or doctorate program (beyond a bachelor’s degree) at the beginning of the school year.

You have children who receive more than half their support from you.

You have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half their support from you and will continue to receive more than half their support from you.

Both your parents are deceased, or you are or were (until age 18 ) a ward/dependent of the court.

You’re a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. (A “veteran” includes students who attended a U.S. service academy and who were released under a condition other than dishonorable. For more detail on who is considered a veteran, see the explanatory notes on the FAFSA.)

There is nothing you can do. It's why I put off college until I turned 24. My parents were divorced, I was living on my own since I was 20 and I didn't want my parents paying for my education. Both parents made a nice chunk of money, but after putting my brother through college, they were both hurting a little. I got denied SFA until I turned 24.

^ Not exactly. If you are on your own and don't speak with your family because of past abuse you can get a special cicumstance waiver or something.

You can get it, but it's very hard. I grew up with an extremely abusive, alcoholic father...and I tried for it...and got denied. Obviously, I wasn't abused enough.

That's what I meant with foster care as being "proof." A parent's criminal record that relates to child abuse would do too.

That's a ward of the state.

It's been some time for me now, but I was able to get "Independance" -- I had to explain (as it was true in my case) that I was NOT on speaking terms with my mother and no contact with her and that my father was deceased. If your situation is similiar, then by all means make an appointment with one of the higher ups in your school's financial aid department to discuss it. I had to supply letters from family friends and my landlord that I was "on my own" but they were able to grant independant status to me.

**And I just wanted to add that I was not physcially abused by mother or father and neither of them had criminal records.**

Financial Aid in america has become a joke. I had the same problems. It left a really bad taste in my mouth for school red tape and government red tape.

Well, it's a pretty shady area. I turned in copies of my lease (showing that I was on the lease and neither parent co-signed for me). I showed copies of my car loan agreement showing that no parent helped with that. I had letters from friends and relatives...but they decided that if I needed my parents help, I could get it...and thus denied me independant status and the financial aid.

The government likes to take money - not to give it.

Agreed. Really, it's going back to them time and time again, not giving up that may have done the trick. Year after year, lol. Some school's financial aid departments are better or at least easier to deal with than others.

what if you are emancipated? wouldnt that work? im not sure, i got married at 20, and before that, my parents paid for it, but i do know, that some private schools will make exceptions for private financial aid, it isnt state, but it can be just as good...

I have seen ads in the student newspaper to find someone to marry just so they can get independent status. Dont know if they've ever gone through with it though.

So, they get independent status, but they lose in a whole lot of other ways. Now, the income of their spouse is considered. And, that could hurt their FA, as well.
