    Default teeth whitening

Has anybody done professional teeth whitening?I am interested in getting my teeth whitened and was wondering what kind of results people have gotten and whether it was worth it and if it was a noticeable difference with before and after in terms of how much whiter your teeth are. Also which one did you do Zoom, Britesmile ect....

Most of the over-the-counter products are not going to give you significant results. At least not anything that is going to make a dramatic change in your appearance.

Go to your dentist and suggest that you want to talk about serious dental whitening therapies. There are several methods out there, including those that involve the use of heat and bleaching solutions -- you sit in a chair for a few hours with bleaching solution and direct heat application and the results are truly dramatic. You will not recognize your teeth. They will look like the ads on TV. (They will also be very sensitive for a few days.)

The problem with this approach is that it's very expensive and you have to go in every few months for "tune-ups."

An alternative solution is to have your dentist make you custom bleaching trays and give you bleaching solution that you can inject into the trays each night and wear when you sleep. These come in several bleaching concentrations. I've had good success with 10%, although 15% is also available. This will also cause your teeth to be sensitive for a few days, but you can control how often you use it and if it's too painful, you can reduce the concentration. This isn't exactly cheap ($800 a year for the trays and solution) but you can achieve equally dramatic results. I went from a C-4 color grade to an A-2 in a few months (A-1 is the absolute brightest).

me too. My dentist says the new thin veneers are the best for long-term results. The downside...........they are quite expensive and your dental ins will not cover the cost.

I'm getting my teeth cleaned this Saturday, and was wondering about giving myself the gift of a whiter smile. (I'm a non-smoking coffee drinker.) I'll ask about the alternatives.

Oh, years back I tried the custom bleaching trays and found the whole process unpleasant, messy and not very effective. In fairness, I don't think I completed the full program.

I'm a dental hygienist and I recommend my patients do the whitening trays. Yes, initially it is expensive, shouldn't be any more than $400, if it is, they're ripping you off and go somewhere else. Once you have the trays made for you, the only expense after that is buying more bleach gel for the trays for touch ups and for a kit it usually isn't more than $40-$50. If you want immediate results, I'd go with the zoom, it does work and with the zoom system they also include making the whitening trays so you can keep the results.

Yes your teeth do get sensitive and that's why I recommend my patients to use a prescription strench fluoride toothpaste at least 2-3 weeks prior to the whitening and then use it during the time you are whitening. The reason your teeth get sensitive is the whitening gels opens up these poors in your teeth so it can penetrate deep into your teeth and whiten them and what the fluoride helps to do seal up the open pore area in front of the nerve area where it becomes sensitive. You can have your dentist call in prescription of Prevident toothpaste or you can now buy over the counter Gel-Kam, they both work. I'd also recommend getting a fluoride treatment at the dentist office too but if you do the zoom, make the fluoride isn't colored, it needs to be white because you don't want to darken your teeth.

One other thing to keep in mind is to try as best as you can to not drink lots of coffee, tea, red wine or smoke while you're whitening your teeth because of the open pores in your teeth, it will take longer for them to whiten and it won't whiten as well otherwise. It's one of the best things I think you can do for your smile! It makes such a difference and it will give you more confidence. People that you don't even know will ask you "How do you get your teeth to be so white" You'll love it!

If you do choose to use stuff that you get at the store, Crest White Strips are the best IMHO, but nothing at the store will work as well as the stuff at the dental office. You do get what you pay for.

I use Rembrandt Intense Stain toothpaste which costs about $6 or $7 per tube at Walgreens or at Walmart. My teeth are white despite the ADA and despite some dentists trying to push their services onto us in order to make a huge profit. I've also used at-home whitening trays made by Rembrandt and Crest White Strips as well. They work for me and I am very satisfied.

I did Zoom and it worked great. However, I think the Crest Whitestrips worked almost as well for me, so if you're on a budget, I'd at least try those first.

I was hoping for freakishly white teeth (like Ross on friends), but only walked out with nice-looking white teeth. Oh well, at least it took out the red wine stains!

    Leogirl,

I checked the store tonight and there were THREE versions of the Crest product! The most expensive, at $42, was Crest "Renewal" Strips. Is there much difference betwen this top-of-the-line and the others?
