Default Am I Doing The Right Thing?

Ok.. This morning, I was outside in my front yard. A saw a dog trotting down the street and then he turned around and came into my yard. I called him over and started petting him. Well, that was hours ago, and he's still here. We even went so far as to take a walk around the neighborhood to see if anyone knew who he was and where his home was. We had people saying he looked familiar, and they pointed us to different houses. No one was home at any of them. We did see a house that had a broken off dog chain tied around a tree. I suspect he belongs there, but there was no food or water to be found. It is 89 degrees outside and it sickens me that someone would leave their dog out in the hot Sun with nothing to cool him off.

When we were walking back from going around the neighborhood, he was walking ahead of us... He walked right back up to our door and laid right down by the water bowl.

I've given him water. And since we have no dog food, he got about 6 slices of bologna.. LOL..

I called the Shelter after much thought, and they're supposed to be sending someone to pick him up. I really hate that he's going there. I swore off pets after 3 failed attempts, but there is really something special about this dog. He adores Delia, and is a totally happy dog. But, he's HUGE. He is, from what I can tell, a Rottie/Lab mix.

I don't know why the shelter thing bugs me. I think they keep strays for 3 days to see if the owner claims them, and then they put them up for adoption. I'm thinking of asking the shelter to call me if he isn't claimed. I just wish I could feel better about sending him there, even for a few days.

Dan is currently not working (thanks to the fuckwads at RentWay who used some bullshit excuse to fire him), so we really can't afford a dog, but what really does a dog need? Food, water, and lots of love, right?

I don't know what the point of this thread is, maybe just venting. I just wish I could feel a little better about this.

Some pics of him are below... He's currently in my fenced backyard waiting to be picked up.

    Well, here's an idea.

Why not ask the shelter to put him on their listings, and foster him until he gets adopted? That way he is in a good home, you can tell the potential dog parent all about him, etc., etc. Of course I am heartless - I've fostered dozens of animals and was only remotely tempted to keep a couple. (one ridiculous cat with a pudgy cigar shaped body and little, teeny dainty feet. He went from "Nibbs" to "Mr. Nibbs" to "Mr. Nibby" to "Mr. Nibblesworth"). If you're the kind of person who would have a problem with that, you might not think it is such a good idea.

Rhiannon, I believe the shelters in Memphis are all kill shelters except the Humane Society. And the Humane Society won't take him unless he's been rescued from abuse. So he's got three days to be claimed or adopted, and then it's the gas chamber, if I'm not mistaken.

If he's such a sweet guy, either keep him or put an ad out and adopt him out yourself. I would hate to see him gassed to death; he looks like a real sweetheart.

I'd thought of the fostering.. It's a definite posibility.. I just know what I'd be too attached to let him go when a home came up for him. Ugh, I swear, the only soft spots in me are with kids and animals. The biggest part of me is telling me to keep him. And part of me is hoping that the shelter forgets to come and pick him up. I just have major regrets about calling them. Everytime I go into the backyard to check on him, he hops to attention and gets this goofy happy look on his face. He's totally adopted me.

I shouldn't be confused, I know I want to keep him.. But, it's the effin hormones, I tell ya.

    What a cute puppy.

I'd hate to know I was the one (1) put basically put him to death.

I doubt I'd get much sleep.

There are very few non kill shelters in the country. Most will put anything over 5 down since it is near impossible to get something that old adopted compared to the rest of the stock.

Ok. I think this convinced me. If they do show up, I'm telling them that he's found a home. I can't let him be put down. He's not aggressive in the least, and from what I can tell, he's very healthy. He's just very hungry right now. I'll probably send Dan to get him some food. Delia was playing with him and even hugged him and kissed him. He likes to jump, so we'll have to watch out for that so he doesn't knock her over. I think we can make this work.

The only shelter I know of that is a no-kill is Bartlett. They keep them forever if they're not adopted out. But, Dan called them first, and they said technically, even though we live in Bartlett, we're on the Memphis/Bartlett line, so they can't take him.

If I were to guess his age, I'd say he was about 4-5. He's a big boy.

Well you don't know at this point whether or not he has an owner who will be missing him... if it's just today the owner might not even know he's gone yet...

That's another thing that's on my mind, dlab. I'm thinking of taking a walk back to that house with the broken chain to see if anyone's home yet. But what kind of people would leave a dog chained to a tree in their front yard on such a hot day with no food or water? There isn't even any shade in their yard. It pisses me off.

Well, dogs can be expensive, so don't fool yourself there. After the shots, the annual checks, the vet visits for what ails them every now and then, it gets to be a couple hundred dollars at a chunk now and then. The leash, the collar, the doghouse, the carpet shampooing, the replacing of shoes or screens or whatever else - it can add up. So just go in with your eyes open.

But with all that, I'm glad we got ours. Can't put a price tag on the enjoyment we get from her company.

For some reason, assholes who treat a dog that way are attracted to Rottweilers and other large breeds. It pisses me off too. My uncle has a coonhound that was kept tied to a post for the first several years of her life and forced to bear litter after litter starting when she was a puppy. Eventually she was rescued, but she needed a hysterectomy and she had been badly beaten. She's incredibly shy and terrified of everyone except my uncle. If you try to pet her and she can't get away, she trembles all over in terror. It's so sad.

Your big guy is lucky to still have such a trusting, friendly personality. Keep him! I bet you'll love him for many years.

    Hi Rhia!

You've already done the right thing by giving him some love and some bologna. Realize this dog has possibly passed over dozens and dozens of people that just turned a blind-eye his way already.

I've rescued a few animals and did so as an "adopt until can find home" basis. I usually DO find them a home this way. I just feed/care for them while putting a pic/ad in every local pet store as well as post on craigslist and other local forums for pet owners. It can take a months, but I've gotten pretty lucky by telling these animal's "story" and someone with room/ability to keep them usually comes forth.

Type something out describing he's an abandoned/lost dog that needs a loving home/family.. describe his demeanor and take a pic of him. Print a couple for pet stores w/ phone # and also try posting him on a few local forums. This way, as you're caring for him.. over time someone that can give him what he needs/afford him might find you.

I hate bastards that abandon, abuse or are negligent animal owner. Whoever DID own this dog prior should be hung by their toenails and skewered.
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.

Well, I decided to take him for another trip around the neighborhood and see if we could find where he lives. We passed a bunch of kids playing basketball in a yard and I heard one of them yell "Hey! I know that dog!" So I stopped and went to talk to them. Then, a girl got on her bike and sped over to the owner's house. It turns out, he belongs to a single mom with 2 young girls around Delia's age. This explains why he liked her so much. I guess he had gotten out of their backyard, which isn't fenced.

So, I'm happy that I found where he belongs, a little sad that he's not staying with me. But, I'm glad that he's back with those girls. I knew he had to belong to a family with small kids, because he was so good and gentle with Delia. I'm also so relieved that he didn't have to go to the Shelter.

    ::sigh::

Well, I'm glad he found his home and it's not the house with the broken chain and no water! I actually know someone who dognapped their neighbor's dog that was being neglected and found it a better home and I don't blame them. Too bad you can't keep him but at least he's loved where he is!

LOL If he ends up here again, I'm going to pretend I never saw him.

    "What? What Dog? Where?"

(Meanwhile, we have him in hiding in the house)

I don't like the idea if him chained with no provisions. That's extremely messed up.

What a cute dog! He looks like such a sweet baby too! I'm glad to hear he's back with his family. I also want to commend you for caring for him and putting so much thought into his situation. That shows a lot of compassion.

Oh.. The house that had the broken off chain and no water wasn't his house, luckily. He lives 2 streets over from us. He had escaped the backyard (which isn't fenced), but he did have food and water there. He seems like he's very loved as much as he is loving.

But I won't hesitate to snatch him up if he comes by here again. Heh

Thanks, Bailey.. It's my soft spot, the only ones I have--for animals and kids.

Whew, thank God.I hate seeing animals neglected.Several years ago,I lived down the street from these *ssh*les that had their beautiful yellow Lab chained 24/7 and no food or water.A friend of mine and I staged a covert operation one early morning and stole him.She kept him.
