WWW Aussies: Making a Living on 20 Hours a Week

Hey, Aussie girls! I'm debating going back to Australia for another degree next year, if I can get my shit together. The only thing, I won't be able to save up enough to live on while I'm there, so I'd have to work. And on a student visa, I can only work 20 hours a week while classes are in session. So can a dancer in Brisbane make enough to live on just working 20 hours a week, mainly on weekends? And will any of the clubs let me work so little?

And this one's mostly for LilithMorrigan... what's different about SoCal vs. Brisbane, as far as dancing goes? If you wouldn't mind a detailed comparison, I'd love it!

If anyone cares, I'm considering Griffith Uni or QUT.

I'm sure that most all the clubs would let you work only 2 nights if thats all you can do. You could make enough to live on, though that would depend on your expenses. I never worked whilst in the States but i had friends working in SoCal and from what they told me, the money seems comparable to here.

Ouch. If the money is comparable to SoCal, I can't live on two nights a week.

What about Melbourne? Is the money better in Brisbane or Melbourne? I'm also thinking of VCA.

Natalia, if I may ask, how much are you making? It's all air dances, right? Do you have to be a really killer stage dancer? I've got a good girlfriend from Adelaide, and while I've never been there, she says I'd like it...

it also depends what 'a living' is to you. in melbourne an average shift FOR ME brings in around $300/$400 approximately on a wednesday/thursday night and while i dont do busy clubs anymore, i cant judge on them in the last year but i never used to leave with less than $500/$600 on friday/saturdays.
in my peak of dancing, while i was still really enthusiastic, a saturday night would be around $800/$900 in the bigger clubs

i've only ever hit the grand once but i know girls that regularly hit it in melbourne (i'm too lazy for that- i spend half my night in and out of the changeroom fixing my makeup)

generally if i do a thursday then friday night in my club at the moment, i'll have about $800 for those two nights (i have a day job as well which i why i only do one or two shifts a week)

    hope this helps you budget-
    p.s

i've said it all in AUS$ we are sitting on about 75cents to the dollar so $200AUS =approx $US280 at the moment

Victoria doesn't take a percentage of your earnings like QLD does and if you come to my club in melbourne, it's absolutely free to work!!!! so it may be worth your while travelling down on the weekends, you can get really cheap airfares.

Thanks, April! I have to look into the cost of living in Melbourne. I'm sure it's higher than the Gold Coast.

Melbourne's cost of living compared to the GC... well... it depends on how close to the CBD you want to be really. If you want to live/work in the CBD or surrounding suburbs... ouch! If you are prepared to drive and/or catch trains to/from the CBD for work.. then not so ouch (the public transport system in Melbourne is definately cheaper/better than Gold Coast).

As for Adelaide, do not rule it out. It can be just as lurative as any other place in Australia. One thing I have learnt after working in so many clubs in Australia: you can pretty much make good money anywhere after two nights if you are prepared to work for it (put in the hours) as well as have the skills (sales ability etc).

South East Queensland is the only place (besides a few select clubs in other places like Club Striptease in Melbourne and the Kittens chain of clubs in Melbourne) that allows touching.

Have you thought about Townsville even? It's a hidden gem due to its range of customers (ESPECIALLY the miners..)

As for the hours on your student visa... the clubs don't really 'log' your hours so how will anyone really know you worked more or less than those hours ?? They may take some details (paperwork) ... as the only time I have had to 'log' my hours is when I was a Skimpy (due to being paid per hour) and topless waitress gigs (private party work).

Melbourne is a hot spot for stripping however is also very competative (ALOT of clubs.. almost a saturation) ... most places only have one or a few clubs to choose from to work within... and I know the Gold Coast won't be lucrative for you (due to the percentage mainly).

Thanks! It's looking like Adelaide so far then... the bf will like that, as he may have completed his EMT training by then and he will get pushed to the head of the immigration line if we go to a less-populated area like SA. I'm going to have to look at the programs at UniSA and Flinders. I appreciate the help!

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

If you are on a student visa and you want to work more than 20 hours per week work in a strip club. I really don't think they even take a look at your visa and how will anyone know you are stripping? You don't pay taxex and you are not on the books so I wouldn't worry about it. I new girl from the Czech Republic who were students adn they didn't limit themselves to 20hours a week. You will be ok because no one will know!

    good Luck

Hi Nicolette, welcome to the forum (-:
This is an old thread - the dates are on the top left hand side.
For future referancies sake Im going to point out that that there is always the risk that you get caught if you do work over the 20 hours a week thing. As mentioned in some of the other Aussie threads dancers have been busted for this and sometimes it seems that its jealous or pissed off dancers or disgruntled customers that dob people in.
Re tax - If youre not paying tax maybe you should think about it, stripping is one of the areas the tax department is taking more notice of these days.

    ^^^ Wow, that is cool!

Lysondra, no, I'm cool. I'm still debating whether to apply to an Aussie program or not but I feel pretty comfortable with my ability to support myself if I do go. Thanks!

Oh yeah and in relation to an earlier post which i forgot - you have to show ID when getting hired here in most clubs now. If youre travelling generally they will want to see your passport and theyll photo copy it.
