    Default The Pole Trick Challenge

Ladies, I need to enlist your help. You see, I have a friend who has made the bold claim that there is no such thing as a pole trick that she cannot do.

Now, of course, I can't allow her to get away with such a claim without testing it. Granted, I've seen her do some pretty impressive stuff, but it is now my mission to find a trick that she can't do, try as she might, and mock her incessantly about it until I get smacked upside the head.

I'll be fair, I'm not looking for circus performer, requires nigh-superhuman strength and/or agility to pull off stuff, but anything short of that is fair game.

So help me out here, what are some of the more difficult and impressive pole tricks that you've seen (or can do yourself). A description of the mechanics involved would help, as I won't be able to get her to try something that she can't visualise.

Damn, it's been a long time since I've been here...

i saw a girl climb a really high pole once, hang upside down at the very top, completely unlock her legs into a split and drop ALL THE WAY DOWN... upside down..in a split...NO HANDS... till she was almost head-on the-floor and then re-grab the pole with her legs and gracefully finish down to the floor.

that was absolutely INSANE. i would flat out kill myself if i tried that.

    Wow, Penny...

I've got a trick I do that I've never seen anyone else do, male or female--but it's kind of hard to describe. It requires a lower ceiling--maybe 9-10' tops. It's kind of like walking or running around the ceiling upside down--really pushing with the feet repeatedly to spin. There's also a unique way of getting up there, but I'm too tired to describe it at length now, sorry.

Go get one of those Cirque du Soleil videos that have pole tricks on them, I've heard there is some outrageous stuff they do.

well now I have to tell you how I get up there, so we can be sure it's the same one, lol--but hey, that's cool even if it's close! I've been really wanting to see a woman do it, and offered to teach several, but no one else does it--yet--that I've seen.

What I do is to grip the pole with my right hand (stronger arm), thumb pointing to the floor. You need to make sure the heel of your hand is firmly on that thing, because it's taking all the weight. Grip low, but without stooping or bending your knees. Then take your left hand and grip the pole as high as possible, thumb up.

Flip up and put your toe at the point where the pole touches the ceiling--this is why a 12' ceiling is out, unless maybe you could climb up first somehow (sounds like a fun challenge to me!). Then take your other foot and push off from the ceiling, fairly far out from where the pole hits the ceiling.

You can then keep spinning around if you keep pushing with the foot--this is what gives the illusion of 'running around' upside down. I have actually done it with a ceiling that had beams and it made it easier by far--but ceiling tiles are a bitch--it's easy to kick the things out. You have to find the little junction of the plastic support strips, that's the only place to push from (gently but firmly) and that makes it much harder to spin freely.

There's a way to come down off this that's pretty cool, but I've gone on enough, I think.

Plus the guys in CC don't really want to read about a guy, and I don't blame them a bit, lol...

Oh, yeah--I meant beams that maybe stick out 6-8" from the ceiling, running wall-to-wall--they give you a great way to push off hard with the foot. My friend Chase had a pole in her house, too, and those beams were great! Now a beam at an angle would tend to get in the way, though.

Is she much of a contortionist? There's a girl here who holds herself parallel to the pole upside down and then stands on her head (ie. puts her feet on her head in that position). Looks tough.

Here's another one that should be pretty hard to pull off--it's called the "Flagpole", I think.

This is where you are fully extended with your arms stretched out over your head, 90 degrees to the pole--completely horizontal--so you look like a flag in the wind. I try to do this on the way down from the trick I described above, but with my arms extended I've got 8 feet to hold up, so the best I can usually do is an angle.

The guy who showed me this was 5'2" and a very skilled gymnast, he could go 90 degrees and really hold it--quite impressive!

But I have lost some weight in the last months from no appetite (stress, smoking, and more stress), so tonight when I did it to show someone I came very close to 90 degrees, it was kind of a kick.

I'm definitely going to go with the 'walking on the ceiling' thing (although I have a vauge recollection of her telling me that she did it...but I may be getting that confused with Djoser's descriptions in the past)

The contortionist stuff is probably a little unfair, all things considered. I've considered the Flagpole previously, but am of two minds - simply because it's impressive as hell, but does require some pretty serious strength to pull off. Arms bent or locked? I've seen it done both ways, but wouldn't have the foggist which one is harder.

On the other hand, she's the one who made the claim, and pride does go before a fall...as long as it's not a literal fall, it's all good.

Penny was the girl at mons you saw do that? I saw a girl at Mons climb the pole and then fall almost to the bottom and catch herself but I don't recall a split. Maybe if it's the same girl she made the trick better though.

I once saw a girl do this thing where she sort of rolled back and forth on her shoulders or something and rocked back and forth knocking the pole with each leg back and forth. Here legs were held in a V shape and she was upside down with her head/shoulders on the floor. It actually shook the pole when she did it. It's hard to explain and I still have no clue how she did it but it was very unique.

There is a way to do the flagpole where you can brace yourself with your arms in a bent position, it's hard to describe, especially as I've never tried it that way. Your head and shoulders are on the other side of the pole, so its more like a lopsided cross, really. It is easier, but still probably tough to do--and it might make a good (more reasonable) challenge for her.

The way I have been trying it is with arms fully extended, which is harder and more impressive looking. i'd love to have a video of me trying it, and possibly succeeding for a moment, the other night. The best I have ever been able to do is to hold myself steady at an angle for a while, and usually it's just a slow descent, dropping just before the right angle is reached.

That gymnast was amazing, though--he was rock steady, right at 90 degrees.

    Djoser that is impressive!
I worked in a circus once where one of the performers was learning the 'flag' amongst other things like tightrope at the grand old age of 21. He practiced on the tent poles around the outside of the big top!
They tell me that gymnasts can do this stuff because their core muscles are so strong. Trying to do this when you're older is far more difficult and takes far more training if you have never done gymnastics as it is a core strength move. Also this is a mans move as the triangular shape of a man is much easier to lift in this way due to their slimmer lower body and naturally stronger musculature.

Have you ever tried trapeze Djoser? I think you'd be a natural

No, I haven't but would it ever be fun! Never really tried gymnastics, and I'm not young, lol--but I've been doing handstand pushups for years, which is probably why I can come close to doing a 90 degree 'flag'.

Sorry I missed seeing this reply before.

I also went to a circus school in London - there may be something smilar where you live - they taught static trapeze, flying trapeze, rope (cord lisse), and silks ('like curtains). It was awesome! Seriously hard but so much fun!

Actually, a circus sounds like fun right now, lol--I want to run away and join one! I don't think they have them around here anymore, though.
