Has anyone ever tried one of these, and did it work for you? I am thinking about trying hypnotherapy but I am scared to dredge up past memories that I have repressed.

Well the hell with the past memories--those aren't always as reliable under hypnosis, anyway--the mind has a way of playing tricks with you.
However, it's quite simple--if you go to someone, tell them not to mess with that shit, and they won't.
Or you can try self-hypnosis, it has worked quite well for me, and no horrible repressed memories ever surfaced, lol...
I'm not making fun of you at all, please don't take offense--you are way too cool to mess with like that.
Just trying to reassure with a little humor, that's all. So you needn't fear discovering that Gramps secretly terrorized you with rubber chickens in the cradle, or anything.
Self-hypnosis can really work, but like anything, you have to kkep practicing to get good at it, and you have to keep it up or you lose the touch--though a certain aptitude will always remain.
Basically what you do is figure out a short (like 6-7 words tops) phrase, that sums up what you want to achieve, use one of the many methods out there to relax yourself and get into the trance state (which I can describe for you if you wish), and repeat the phrase in a calm, slow voice, over and over.
I'm not sure this is what you are after, exactly, but say if you wanted to increase your confidence level or sales aptitude, it could easily prove effective. Or overcome any shyness onstage, whatever you want, basically.
Obviously self-hypnosis won't help you figure out what's wrong, like why you are depressed or have a fear of heights, but it can obviate the need to know why, by eliminating the problem...

Just to tag onto your thread - I heard if you get a hypnotherapist to hypnotize you into thinking you have larger boobs than you do, they actually grow.
Info?

I'd be hesitant about the hypnosis thing... It does sound like a good idea, but there are a lot of horror stories out there about, instead of dredging up the memories you have suppressed, the therapists can ask encouraging questions that will make you kind of create new-old ones. I was reading an article a few years back about a girl who had this done, and by the end of the sessions, she was convinced that her parents had raised her in a satanic cult, she had been raped several times, and had even eaten sacrificial baby flesh during a ritual, or something horrible and weird like that. Her memories felt real and she was so horrified that I think she ended up taking her parents to court.
I've heard that on some people, it can work. But on those people who are naturally creative, who daydream a lot and create fantasy worlds, this is not the best route to go, because their mind is so used to making things up and having them feel vividly real, it is more likely to do so during hypnosis. That's how I am, so I am scared of ever giving this a try. It would be nice to know some things, but then I would always be wondering if the memories were real or if they were fake. And I think that would be worse than not knowing...
But hey, if this works for you, then let me know! ^_^

Ahhh ok, I think that If I ever do this it shall be with my Spiritual advisor. Sometimes, it is just frustrating to have so much of my memory repressed, which may actually be more of a medical thing anyways. Thanks for the info though, and if I could get hypnotherapy to make my boobs grow....I would! HAH

Self-hypnosis really worked for me to get rid of cravings, but it takes a lot of work, and I got lazy about it after a while. Really spookily effective though (I wouldn't even realize it was working until a few days later, I realized I hadn't snacked once between meals, or eaten chocolate, just like I tried to hypnotise myself out of). It can really push those subconscious urges completely away if you do it correctly, and often enough.

It really helped me with tests and such in college, and also as a general confidence-builder throughout my life, whenever I have used it.
I got really, really good at it for a while--to the extent where I told myself to lift my arm, and it lifted itself--a very, very strange feeling, let me tell you!
The skeptics among you will now be laughing derisively at this--"You moron, anyone can lift their arm!".
This was totally and completely different...it was literally like some force, other than my nerve impulses, was lifting my arm--like it had a mind of its own doing it.
It was like in some horror movie--it raised itself in twitches or short increments, but it wasn't scary or weird at all.
Though if it did happen without the self-hypnosis, I'd have been freaking, let me tell you...

There's all different methods of putting yourself into a trance state--this is the state of hypnosis (or, as I believe, 'prayer' as well).
It's the state in which your subconscious is most open to suggestions you choose to give it.
It's simply a matter of deciding to do it, finding a quiet, comfortable place you feel good being in, and using one of the methods.
I have found countdowns to be most effective, combined with visualizing a progression of heavier elements--i.e. silver is '3', gold is '2', etc. So I visualize myself as being a statue made of these elements in succession, getting heavier as I count down, sinking down into the cushion of the chair. Some people prefer to count up, or visualize getting lighter, so that they wind up 'floating'.
!0 is a good number of increments--20 would be too many, 3 too few. you can go 1-10, or 10-1, it's up to you.
Whatever works for you...
It might be easier to do after a good workout, as your mind will already be in a slight state of trance, your body will be relaxed, and your blood suffused with the 'feel-good' endorphins a workout produces.
Or you can utilize the alternate tensing and relaxing of the muscles in your feet, then your calves, then your thighs, etc.
Try a number of these techniques, and maybe combine a couple.
You'll know when you are in the state--it's dreamy, relaxing, and like being asleep and awake at the same time. That's when you start repeating your chosen phrase, and picture in your mind the result.
Say you want to feel more uninhibited onstage--you imagine it as you say it--just avoid imagery that will provoke an adrenaline reaction in your body counteractive to the trance state. Don't imagine yourself dancing to the band Disturbed, however, lol...
In other words, visualizing beating the shit out of someone--for a boxer trying to improve his ability--would be tough to pull off.

I also used the countdown method, but i'd imagine myself sinking to the bottom of an ocean (which is peaceful for me- that's important). And when I was in the state, i'd say "i don't like to snack, i only eat at mealtime, chocolate is unhealthy, i don't like to snack, etc". And then after a while I would bring myself back up. When you're starting out, make sure there is nothing around to distract you, and that you're not strapped for time (any worries will make it difficult to trance out). Also, be sure to bring yourself back up afterward, so there is a clear distinction. Don't let yourself fall asleep right out a trance. Bring yourself back, and then go to sleep if you want.
and i'll also emphasize the spooky factor. It works without you being consciously aware of it...like you're engaging in some unusual habit completely out of nowhere. As for the will to do it, just make it a habit. Set aside some time. Put it on your to-do list. It's not really difficult or strenuous, so it's not something you're likely to dread doing or skip (like some unpleasant chore).

Very good advice, MollyZ...
