Default How much would u pay for your education

Ok, so I'm in california and am having an AWFUL time getting into a nursing program. Everything is based on lottery or you must have a 3.8-4.0 !!! So, I got an offer for a school in the carribbean. It's 25,000 for 2 years, it includes tuition, housing and food. I've always wanted to live somewhere tropical (well at least for a few years) I'm tired of waiting around to get lucky and get picked for the lotteries here. I am really thinking about taking this offer for this school! I have enough to cover all the expenses and may need to take out a small loan for backup. What do you guys think???

Is it a certified program that will make you able to get a job in the US when you are done? I know some of those med school programs are shady down there. Couldn't you try another state instead of out of the US?

^^^ That's a good point. If you get a degree there, would you still be able to use it in the US? Or would you just stay there to work after you finish school?

I agree with Jenna78. Is there some other reason preventing you from enrolling in other states?

As long as the school is accredited and your credentials will be tranferrable to the US, I don't see why not. The price is good, that's for sure.

It's not uncommon for Americans to get their MDs in the carribean, and do their resedencies in the States. Maybe it's the same for nurses?

I'm trying to get into nursing school too, so I feel your pain. I've given up on trying to get into the Bachelor's programs because acceptance rates are at about 10%, so I'm applying to Associate's programs at community colleges. I hear that it's infinately easier to get into an RO-to-BSN program than it is to get into a nursing program.

I think KrazyJane's suggestions seems to be the most reasonable course of action. I never new nursing programs were so difficult to get into. I thought their was a shortage of nurses. Perhaps this is the reason. Then again, I would not want someone with straight Ds (note i am not saying the poster has straight Ds or did super poorly in school) drawing blood on me or any other medical tasks even if she use to be a hot stripper . As always my brain is on a tangent. I think i borrowed 50k all together for undergrad and graduate programs.

BTW http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/gra...ndex_brief.php here is guide from us news on nursing programs.

    have a good one

I paid over $100,000 for mine and don't regret it at all.

it's not all about job training....it's about expanding your mind. Defintely priceless.

Nursing is a good field, but I can see why it's so competitive. it's one of the few areas you can make good money with a 4-year degree. That, and IT....but most women are not into that. So basically, it's one of the few traditionally-female jobs where you can make moolah.

I highly agree with Emily here! My education cost enough.but not 100,000. I have a MBA, don't use it. Does not pay well here in Fl. But damn if nursing does these days. Many hospitals will use you for 3 days, 12 hour shifts! The rest you are off, and it's very good money. I regret i did not take up nursing years ago instead. Go for it. Also check with the school. Many Get a degree out of states, and it's fine to use over here!

    Good luck,

    Pamela

Uh, there is no nursing shortage. There are many nonpracticing licensed nurses in the US who quit b/c it's such a horrible, stressful job and hospitals treat you like you don't need stuff like good pay, shorter hours, etc. You also can't strike without serious consequences like blacklisting b/c people look at you like a murderer if you leave your patients behind. They save money by loading you up with deadly amounts of patients and even replacing real nurses with unlicensed aides like medical assistants, medication aides, and nursing assistants. In nursing homes, there is often only one nurse on a station. The others are nursing assistants and medication aides. It's dangerous b/c aides cannot assess aubtle things like diabetes breath or changes in skin, and when they do report something, there's only one nurse who's trying to juggle everything. Hospitals are nothign but corporations. When I worked as a nursing assistant, one of the instructional videos was about customer service for retail workers and waitresses. It's fucking bullshit. I'm an aide, not a maid. I have no problem with helping people be comfortable, but damned if I'm going to get coffee for 5 family members or 10 packs of sweet n'low for the hypochondriac who can walk and do eerythign by herself while demanding time that should be spent with people who can't even move! This isn't the fucking Hilton!

Nursing instructors get paid shit, and that shortage triggers a further shortage because schools can't accept a lot of students. Why settle for $17 an hour teaching when you could be making 3-4 times that much by putting your Master's Degree or Ph.D to use at a hospital? Also, med students get all the resources. Nursing school is deadly competitive. I have like a 3.7 GPA and a 3.9 with the sciences yet I've been rejected from nursing school 2 years in a row.

Seriously, ask a nurse about the nursing shortage and watch him/her roll his/her eyes at the situation.

My undergraduate degree cost about $100K. My graduate degree cost about $60K. I'm not sure what my PhD will cost me yet, but given that it's a 5-year minimum program (unless I get accepted in the UK), I'm looking at another substantial tuition bill.

Has it been worth it? Absolutely. No question. While undergrad was a great experience, grad school was even better. And I'm not currently using either of my degrees at all, not even remotely.

Like Emily said, it's about learning how to learn, learning about yourself and your true desires and interests and expanding your horizons beyond what you otherwise would have done on your own.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

$25k for two years is great if you can make a good living with it when you get out. I keep thinking about going to law school. It's about $80k for the part-time program. I'll probably make less money starting out as an attorney than I do now. So one day if I save the money maybe. But I've learned owing a chunk of money SUCKS! If you can pay for most of it though go for it.

I spent about $50,000 on my bachelor's and Master's, not counting living expenses. I do know that hospitals and offices that hire medical professionals with Caribbean degrees have a reputation for being shady and incompetent. When I was a teenager I wound up in the care of some doctor who got his degree in Jamaica and he almost killed me. The hospital turned out to be running a fraud scam. I wouldn't trust someone who had to go to the Caribbean for a medical degree, not at all.
