    Default Severe back pain, help!!!

So, I went and auditioned the other night and got highered. The club was very nice, great management, great DJ, nice dancers, etc. This was the first time ever in my life that I tried dancing. I currently have a very bad low back problem and have to have regular treatment for it. I'll tell you, nothing could have prepared me for the back pain I experienced the night I tried dancing, my back hurt so bad! I'm wondering if there's anything I can do? My friend told me to wear shorter shoes, I did wear that night 7 inch platforms. He told me that the shoes will make my back hurt more, is that true? I just figured it was from the bending and moving around, maybe I was wrong. Does dancing hurt your back, even if you don't already have a back problem? I don't know what to do. I really want to dance and hope I can find a solution but can't do it with the pain I had the other night. Any help or suggestions are very much appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, it's probably the shoes. Wearing shorter shoes won't help, as your 7" shoes are all platform- they have the same 4" rise as 6" and 5" dancer shoes. If you can get away with wearing 3" shoes at your club, it might be worth a try.

But since you already have chronic lower back pain, I think this will only get worse. I don't have any chronic back problems, and my lower back always hurts after a night of work.

I don't know what else to say...good luck!

Heels themselves put pressure on the lower back, then add all that bending and moving.. yeah.. thats a problem

Try not to stick your but out when you walk. I constantly have to remind myself to keep my back straight, because I also get lower back pain. I walk with my back arched and my butt sticking out sometimes, which makes the pain worse. Try to keep everything in line and that might help a little.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

I also have a really bad back. My doc has told me to ditch my heels and quit dancing, but if my doc had it his way I would be in bed for life or living in a bubble lol. Honestly dancing is going to keep you in pain every night. No matter what size heels you wear its not going to make a diff. But what can help slightly is to make sure you walk with your shoulder back and your back straight, dont do pole work(trust me im a pole monkey and I regret it but im stupid and keep doing it anyway), dont drink at work, take advil to help keep the pain dull, when you get home after work take epsom salt bath then use a heating pad and take a muscle relaxent if its muscle or whatever meds your doc is giving you.
Another thing that helps is acupunture... make sure you see a good therapist for it though.. some just suck. Also in my experiance chircopractors are a waste of time and money... many doctors will tell you this too... they just give temp relife of your pain and say 'see you in a week or two', thats how they continue to make money. But if it is working for you, dont ruin a good thing. Acupuncture and physio therapy help a lot for me

Now im just telling you what works for me. I have spinabifida and scoliosis(like I can spell it) also i've twisted, cranked, pulled and god knows what else to every muscle in my back and snapped 6 ribs off at my spine(I used to train young horses... they like to beat you up lol). Dancing is not a good thing for a bad back but if you want to do it be careful about it. Talk to the doctor your seeing for treatment if your comfortable with it and ask him what you can do to help your back.

I just skimmed through thread... seems to be some good advice as well.

Good luck! Hopefully you can find something that works for you.

I have a permanent back injury, as well as nerve damage. I find that doing simple things help me. Taking Ibuprofen before work, bending at the knees as much as possible, and frequent breaks help. I also use Bayer back and body cream afterwards.

i cant stress this enough...have to keep abs strong! i have a herniated disc as well as a buldging one right below it. in the heels you tend to stick your butt out as stated earlier which pretty much unactivates your abs...keep them strong and do strengthening exercises to protect that back.

super easy exercise: lay on your back on the floor with your legs bent and tilt your pelvis towards your head...just think that your pushing your belly button to the floor. make sure you dont push through your heels to do this, if you put your hand under the small of your back when you engage this properly, your low back will become flat against your hand. now just remember to do this while your walking in your heels.

That's a great one Schea, my physical therapist taught me this and told me if I didn't do any other excercise, to at least do this one.

I'm not sure what kind of back problem you have, but is there any way you could do strengthing exercises? It is very important to have a strong back as a dancer (any type of dancer). Try doing some light weight deadlifts, back extensions, etc. and build up the weight slowly to strengthen the lower back. Also try sleeping with a pillow under you knees to alleviate lower back pressure.

My back is so bad that I'm probably facing spinal fusion or disc replacement surgery. I injured it when I was 15 because I was a gymnast, I fell off the bars and fractured my back. It healed up and then when I was 25, I got in a car accident and then it's hurt like the worst hell imaginable since. Tried everything! Cortisone shots, physical therapy, chiropractor, acupunture, and 2 non-invasive surgeries. Nothing has given me pain relief, it sucks! It's not the kind of pain I can live with either, it's unbearable. I don't think dancing will injure it because it's not herniated, it's actually got a small tear in the nucleaus part of the disc which is the inside part of it. I try to stay strong and exercise. What I'm doing now is doing much more strengthening on my abs, legs & butt before I go back and try dancing again. I know I can't do it right now with the condition I'm in.

Thanks for all your advice and help! Please keep your fingers crossed for me in hopes that my back gets better. A miracle would be nice! I really want to dance, I have for a very long time and won't let this stop me. Cally, you're a lot like me. When I want to do something and I set my mind to it, I'll do it. Good for you girl! I hope your's and everyone else's on here get's better too because nothing hurts worse than back pain IMO!

Bah, I pinched my sciatic nerve a couple of months ago (lifting my head out the sink after washing my hair, of all stupid things) and it stopped me from dancing. Only recently am I beginning to heal up enough to consider going back to it. The only thing that saved me were Robax Platinum and epsom salt baths. I still need Robax to keep me going some days. Yes, strengthening the deep abdominal muscles will do WONDERS for your back when you're able. I do stott pilates and I feel a difference already. Whatever you do, don't push yourself, you'll make it worse. Just relax and try not to get too down on yourself!

for me all my joints click loudly but its my KNEES that feel the pain the next day

try preparing your back before you start your shift - a 20 min full-body stretch at home, especially those hamstrings (they run down the back of the thigh from butt to backs of knees - if these are tight they will affect your back and your dancing will look stiff! I find the best way to lengthen them is to sit in a warm bath (before & after work) and lean forward touching your toes, looking down at your knees.

when you arrive at the club you will have been driving/ carrying heavy bags which can unbalance your spine so again before you change another quick stretch in the changing room or somewhere quiet will lengthen the cartlidges and give you increased flexibility for your performance.

again another toe touch just before going on stage another quick stretch before dj calls your name

i get some strange looks in the changing room when i do this, but id rather have that than have years of pain in the future!

alexander technique is excellent and often the thing backpain sufferers turn to last of all with the most sucess, and it is possible using this method to adapt to heels.

try varying the height of heels using different shoes/boots for costume changes, you may find boots give you the extra security and support. you can also take shoes with slippery soles to the shoe menders to have grippy soles stuck on - or maybe try salsa/tango/ballroom shoes which have a very good grip, around 2.5inch heel and are very elegant too : )

    good luck,

    Larissa xx
