    Default Supporting the troops...?

I googled this, but the results are overwhelming...

Is anyone familiar with legit and worthwhile organizations to support our troops?

Best way to support them ---> Call your state senator and congressional representatives and tell them to bring the troops home as soon as possible.

You will find the contact info for your representatives here -->

Not the same thing I know....but I read a story about the troops that never get mail or anything. It was so sad I wrote letters to a guy for months and suddenly stopped hearing from him.

    He was killed in battle.

I don't think I ever got over it. BRING THOSE TROOPS HOME!!!

Wow,I'm so sorry to hear. You hear about stuff like this on TV all the time, but it hits extremely close to home when it's someone you actually know.It makes the ugliness of the war all the more transparent.

I didn't even realize what had happened, I thought maybe he'd been transferred or something. One of the guys in his platoon found all my letters after the fact and wrote to tell me what had happened. The guy was only 22 years old.

ARG! War is such a senseless waste! The politicians need to get over themselves, grow the fuck up, and find a better way to resolve their problems! I swear, if women were running the world it would be a better place to live.

It was nice of that guy to take the time and write you to let you know what happened.

I'm inclined to agree that the best way to support them is to bring them back ASAMFP...

But writing them is a great idea, so long as they are stuck there.

What's really awful about this war is the situations these guys are killed in--I mean if you really read about war and battle, it's pretty horrible stuff. But at least in a typical battle, you can shoot back. To get killed by a car bomb when you are just walking down the street is a pretty rotten, futile way to go.

There is no front line--it's everywhere...

Yes, of course. But I have a birthday coming up, for which I'm already receiving cash gifts from customers, and I'm looking to donate to an organization.

Now that is a cool thing to do--who ever gives away some of their own birthday money--I don't think I ever have...

No matter what anyone thinks of the situation over there, they would have to admire this.

There would be more drama for certain. But there would be fewer actual wars/conflicts emanating from such drama. At least drama wouldn't kill as many lower and middle class young people.

PS. The irony is that the sons and daughters of the people that decide on wars (the political class) are not proportionately represented in the military personel (the working class) that actually bear the brunt of such war-fighting. Very ironic, indeed. In essence, we now have a class of citizens whose purpose is to fight our wars; and another class who takes us to war. If this is allowed to continue it will only bring us more wars and more often.

It's a voluntary organization (the US military). We cannot force the sons/daughters to enlist simply because of who their parents are.
If they were to be required to enlist because their fathers/mothers are representatives within the nation, it would be grossly unfair to them, and in all fairness, EVERYONE would (and IMO should, but that's another discussion for another day) be better served by being required to serve military time.
In short, we can't require those individuals to serve, solely based on their parents' chosen profession.

This is a great site. We've used it and gotten thank you responses.

It's pretty sad when a president is willing to commit his troops to a kind of war that cannot be won (Vietnam, anyone?). The best thing would be to bring them home...so after you visit the anysoldier.com site, make sure you write your elected officials.

It has less to do with them being "required" to list, as it does when the draft comes around, the sons/daughters of national representatives have the money and 'pull' to make sure their child is safe at home. Like, oh who was that again...oh, yeah. George W. Bush.

Of course we want the troops home, but the reality is they're not. It just bugs me when people complain "bring them home" and do nothing to support them. (I'm not accusing anyone in this thread just making a statement).

Anyways.....here are 3 very good legit websites to help and support the men and women over there.....

Glimmer, obviously you never went to public school. Hell, at my high school we had EACH branch of military posted at my school. They had their own office and everything! Alot of them use the same tired line of "you can go to college, and get $50,000" and kids fall for that crap. Hell, I ALMOST fell for the line, "you can see the world" I had a recruiter calling me about 3x per week trying to get me to sign. He was extrememly persuasive.

Also, I wanted to add they even had an undercover newstory on like Dateline or 20/20 about the motives that these recruits are doing to get kids to sign up. Hell, I remember one segment the recruiter was telling the kid he had a higher chance of dying out on the streets in his city than going overseas...WTF

Just wanted to give you guys a email from my brother in law I asked him how he was doing and what was his take on the situation over in Iraq . He is presently there for a year he is in the Marines ( I think he has been in for 10-12 years now ) .

No worries on the late email. It is good enough to get something other than the normal work stuff that I have to do. Anything is a welcome break. We do have contact on a regular basis with the people here. It is difficult to answer your question just from the people in our area. The basic thing to remember is that people are just people. So few people truly care about what is going on in politics. The people here just want to survive and that is all they care about. So if survival means that on Monday the agree with us and then on Tuesday they agree with someone else then that is what they will do. They have no concept of anything else and it is difficult to explain that too them. I am sure they would like to be a prosperous country but, they have no understanding of what it takes to get there. The average household income is around $2,500.00 per year. That is for the ones that have jobs. We try to create and provide jobs to the people of this area. In many cases we have made several positive changes. But, there are always people that ruin things for whatever reason. The only answer is time. Look how long it took Japan to recover or Germany. China is already changing. There is no 5 year or 10 year answer. If want to change this country we need to be here for a long time and have the strength to keep going. That is just my thought.
Otherwise, I am doing fine. I do miss home and I will have to come and see you when I return. I hope you both are doing well and taking care of yourselves. I will write more when I can.

    Take care,

Never went to public school? You're incorrect in that assumption.
I also served in the military.
I also know what extent recruiters will go to to get someone to enlist. I always told, and currently to this day, tell people considering enlisting, be sure you know what you're getting into. TALK to someone besides your recruiter. A recruiter is a car salesman, he'll do anything to get you into that car/the military.
I can't agree with the recruiter you're referencing's tactics. I will say that there ARE MOS's that don't deploy near as much as others. Mine was one of them.
For a LOT of the people I met while enlisted, and the same goes for the people my exhusband (who is also military) and both brothers (both are NCOs in the military) have met, the military (choose a branch) is a way out.
Many of those who have enlisted these days freely admit they could not afford the training (especially in careers like I was involved with in the medical field) without having received it in the Army. Many also admit that without the discipline the military enforces they likely would have landed their butts in jail.
Make no mistake, I do not contend that the enlistment process is perfect. In fact, it is as far from perfect as it possibly could be, however with the creation of an all voluntary force we have severely inhibited the growth and development of our nation's military.
Of course, this is only my opinion and you are free to disagree with it as you like.
