    Default Shoe Issue

I did a search and didn't find anything similar to my question. (sorry if this is a repeat. I have a feeling it probably is)

I bought my first pair of stripper shoes at Electrique Boutique last week! (yay! )

They look like these, except in black. I wore them once (to a live show of Rocky Horror) this past weekend, and fell in them a few times. The weight distribution is really tricky in these.
Are they too high for a beginner to start out with? Should I switch to something different, or do I just need practice?

No, 7in heel w/ 3in platform is actually a 4in heel. That's normal. Just keep walking around them in the house. Clean up the house, do laundry, vacuum, all in those heels. I did that before I started dancing. I didn't have any problems once I actually started. Good luck

you can practice and will eventually get the hang of it. I started out with 6's and then later on graduated to 7's and 8's. The 6 inchers would probably be easier but even those take some getting used to.

You'll probably have to adjust your gait a little when wearing the platforms, but you'll get used to it with practice. Try to walk a little slowly and deliberately at first (slow can be sexy!). Definitely wear them around the house, this should also help them break in.

Walking around the house in them can be tricky -- carpet is impossible in those shoes.. or, at least more difficult than the floor at the club, assuming it's not carpet. I still can't really walk on carpet in my shoes after 8 months of dancing.. lol.

I don't like the ones with the buckle straps for a couple of reasons: if you ever take your shoes off for dances (I do), it takes forever in the dark to try to unbuckle and buckle your shoes. The last thing you want when you're finishing your dance and trying to get a good tip out of him is to be struggling with the buckle on your shoe. Also, we have a ramp that leads up to our stage, and trying to go down that ramp with those straps around my ankles is sooo hard, because the rest of your foot slides forward but your ankle stays in place.. I actually fell flat on my face wearing those once! I really prefer these ... they keep your foot in place, and are easy to take on and off. Also, you'll definitely want an all-clear shoe so it matches every outfit!

You'll get used to them, don't worry.

Dont ruin them by taking them outside. These types of shoes are pretty much made for the club. My best suggestion is to vacuum around the house in them before going on stage with them.

After a few nights at work your shoes will mold themselves to your feet. I have a pair that is almost exact to these that are my favorite. I can run, walk, dance, jump rope, whatever in them. They are more comfortable than most my 'normal' shoes that I wear on a day to day basis.

My helpful hint for the day... keep your ankles in check.

i have a couple pairs of boots that have a big platform and a big heel. the heel isnt like a stilleto type heel. its like one of the thick, chunk ones. i read on another site that chunk heels make you look like such a newbie. but you really are new so id think youd look new no matter what you did or wore.
i like to wear them with my regular clothes and theyre really comfy. i wore them around salem on halloween night. they have cobblestone roads there, bad choice. but i was walking around for 6 hours in them and i didnt fall once.
you can kinda push and pull on the heel and make it move a little in or out, not cause its loose or anything, more like shocks. i bought one pair from hot topic actually. they bust out their more strippery type stuff around halloween. you can probably check out their website.

Are you falling because they're slippery on the bottom? On a lot of stripper shoes you have to get those little stick on no slip things.

I think it's because i was walking on uneven ground. However, standing up from sitting in a chair is a pain. I know the first one isn't an issue in a club, but i'm worried that I'll stand up after talking to a customer and fall flat on my ass, or worse, break an ankle. I almost hurt myself a few times, but was lucky that my girlfriend was there to catch me.

Be careful. After wearing 4 inch heels (no platform) for months, I tried a pair of 7 inch heels with 3 inch platforms. The rise was the same. I put non-sticks on the bottom. I took two easy days to get used to them.

Then I went to a new club in them and sprained my foot on the stage steps.

This was December. I still have pain. I wasn't able to work at all until middle of January, couldn't work in heels or do more than one shift a week until the middle of February and I only got back to three shifts a week in March.

Foot sprains are serious business and nothing to take chances with. (The bartender I talked to the other day, who'd also had a foot sprain, told me it took his a YEAR to completely heal.)

YES, one does get used to one's shoes, but I got my injury by ignoring the signs the shoes weren't right for me (i'd fallen twice before that.) I'm pretty darn dextrous on stage: I can walk on the railing and everything. The bad shoes just weren't balanced correctly and the toe platform was narrower than my foot. Wide-footed girls like me have to be very careful with platforms. I don't know if that's your issue but I'm starting to figure out how to pick the right shoes, and that's the issue for me.

Start with other shoes if you can. The Ellie M-Juliet is my current shoe and although it's also too narrow for me, it has a lower platform and works well. Boots are also frequently more stable.

Yes my feet are wide too and i find that some cheaper (or even lower) platforms dont support the whole width of my foot.

I had the very same shoes in a 8(US) and had to buy a 7 the next time as the 8's were making me wobble around. I now buy some styles in an 8 and some in a 7 because the fitting is different with different brands. Try a smaller size and it might give you more control. I dont personally think it makes a massive difference height-wise but the higher ones seem to have wider soles.

with higher heels your supposed get a size or half size smaller. cause (unfortunately) it pushes your feet forward down the shoe, and you have extra space at the back of the heel. i bought some rockin boots in a size 9, which i thought would fit. the store was going out of business and i would die without those boots and i knew id never find ones that awesome again, so i got them. not only do i usually wear an 8, but i wouldve needed an even smaller size. i put cotton inside the toe and i slide around in them a little less. i dont really wear them that often so its okay.

After four years of dancing I am still afraid of anything with a platform. My favorite shoes are 5" with a 1" platform and they are soooo comfortable. I'm sure you'll get used to them, however there is nothing that looks worse then watching a girl who cannot walk in heels

i'd say try a different pair. I have two pairs of 7"inch-heel, 3-inch platform shoes in silver and clear. the silver ones are impossible to wear. i cant keep my balance at all. but the clear ones are steady and I have no trouble walking around in them. the heel on the silver one is smaller and goes in more than on the clear ones.

Weird, Kitatonic: the Demon Shoes wot Nearly Killed Me are silver mirror electroplated. The brand is Eloe Anita (and I don't recommend it! Seems to be out of business though.) It's some kind of spike heel. (And yes, I still own them: they've been moved to the wardrobe section for photoshoots where I'm not doing anything more intensive than standing.)

The funny thing is I have no problem with many spikes and stilletoes. The heels I wear right now, the M-Juliet (http://store.yahoo.com/snaz75/el-m-juliet.html), are just about as narrow. They just don't have that awful, slick, slippery feel when I shift my weight.

*writes down "heel tilt" in the list of factors to watch for, along with "shoe width" and "platform height"*

Alexis81, THANK YOU . . . it's so good to hear from someone else who has trouble with giant towering platforms, and for whom it can't just be written off to "amateur". I felt really crappy after my accident because I posted two threads about it in "Body Business" and NO ONE responded -- I know it's probably just because I keep odd hours and that forum's very active, but at the time, I was terribly depressed from not being able to walk properly or work, and I imagined people thought I was just a bad dancer and should suck it up. :-(
