    Default Self Tanner Roundup

I'm getting ready to do my first self tan in a looooooooooooong time.

    So I'
m curious to hear everyone's product favorites and whether or not they prefer to self tan at home or go to a professional (airbrush or booth spray tan). I had a Mystic tan once and I was not happy with the results at all...it made my face look dirty and deposited very little color on my ghostly white legs.

    Clarins
makes an excellent tanner for the face...any other good ones?

L'oreals spray on tan never dried and left
me feeling like a greased pig. Neutrogena's products give great color but have no staying power at all. Banana Boat is ok but overly drying. Any other ones you can recommend?

I got this pop up when i opened this thread, lol. This sounds good. http://krometan.com/html/about_krome_tan.html

But the one that I have used a few years ago myself was Estee Lauder's mousse. Good, but I wish it came in aersol(sp?) can.

The Jergens daily moisturizer w/tanner is my favourite. If you get the one for the tanned skin tone it will work better, and make sure to appy it to dry skin (damp skin will streak...I think that's true for all self tanners). But I also use a tanning bed once or twice a week. And I am bone pale usually. I'm not brown like this, but I have definite colour. Which is enough for me.

I've tried a lot and I like L'Oreal or the mousse from Lancome if youw ant to spend more.

I find it interesting that you say Nutrogena has no staying power. They way they work is by DHA (the ingredient they all have that makes you tan) staining your epidermis.

I don't like the sprays either...foam, lotion or mousse. That's it.

DHA is the active ingredient for all self tanners...why Neutrogena flakes off so quickly (in my experience) I do not know....

I have heard good things about Lanco
me flash bronzer so maybe I'll try that. I've also spot tested St. Tropez at Sephora and was pleased with the color and staying power.

I noticed with nutrogena that there is a darker bronzer, so when you wash it off, the difference is more noticable...so I kind of know what you're talking about. if it's gone the next day, then that's probably why. I liked their foam though...very easy to apply and dried fast.

I keep going back to the L'Oreal Sublime Bronze. I like the lotion since it has a bronzer, but the gelee dries faster. Plus it doesn't have the glitter in it (Lancome has this too)....I feel like a disco ball.

I couldn't deal with smell sublime gives. I love the color but I have a sensitive sniffer
I like st tropez and neostrata for tanner. I have been using neostrata lately and there is like no smell and the color is awesome.

It's too bad the Neostrata isn't tinted. I am too clumsy to use self tanners without a tint.

I think I'll go to Sephora and pick up some St. Trope. I hear that Au Courant is great too but I don't know of any place that sells it locally.

I plan on going to my local salon and having a spray tan with St. Tropez but I just wanted to know does it make you look too dark afterwards or is there a lighter tone for people who look a ghostly white?

Ive used self tanners before but it all looks wrong in the morning and I get dead fed up about it, all I want to do it hide some lumps and bumps is there too hard to ask?!

I dont really want to try a sun bed.

    Angry Re: Self Tanner Roundup

hey i hear what youre saying because those self tanners can get pretty costly. Then to have them not turn out the way they should is a real kick in the ass! I have tried neutrogena and jergens daily moisturizer for fair skin tones. The jergens was way better and alot less expensive and it is practically goof proof, but i'm gonna go for the medium shade and see if that gives me a little darker color. The only other alternative is tanning bed or beach bathing , but that depends on your own preference, although too much as every one knows is dangerous now days but it still feels good to let the sun beat down on your body.

I'm glad I found this thread! I was just discussing this w/my sister... My skin is still a little dry from the winter and I know if you don't exfoliate first, all self tanner hell will break out. Any recommendations for a good, but quick, way to get skin ready for self tanning?

don't waste your money on an exfoliating cream....

in the shower, scrub with a washcloth and then when you get out, really rub yourself down with the towel. Once you start tanning, you'll see how well this works because the towel will be covered in "tan".

Or a sugar scrub (which you can make yourself).

I could never get the smell to fade....it took a week of scrubbing in the shower. Plus, it was majorly streaky.

im really pale and i tried that l'oreal stuff for light/medium tones. i only did my legs to test it, i exfoliated, i put on regular lotion (i read somewhere to do that) and then i put on the tanner. it looked great, i didnt look orange and it wasnt that dark at all. id like to keep myself kinda pale, but i dont want to be transparent like i look now. im gonna do up the rest of my body today.

I'll chime in in support of Jergens. I've tried L'Oreal and the Neutrogena Build-A-Tan, but Jergens really does seem to be the best so far. I like the 'gradual' aspect of it - no need to be paranoid about covering every single inch just exactly right. I mean, you do need to take some care and apply it evenly, but the streaking and splotching that I've experienced with other brands doesn't seem to be an issue.

I should add that I'm extremely fair, so even a tiny, subtle change of tone makes for a visible difference. I mean, I'm talking IVORY skin, which left to its own devices will alternately burn and peel all summer long, gradually accumulating some light frecklage as the summer goes along, but that's it. By September I'm back to my usual milky way. As you can see, ALL these products are a bloody freakin' miracle to me! If only I'd had them back in junior high . . .

Anyway, sounds like the medium tone might work better for those not as alabaster as I.

I use l'oreal sublime bronze medium-dark, the sparkly stuff Emily doesn't like. I don't mind being a disco ball, hehe. I actually have extremely fair skin and it doesn't look orange or crappy on me. I like it, except for the smell.

I got this tip from someone else on this board awhile ago- Neostrata is the best self tanner I've ever used. It's ultra easy to go on, and makes my skin super soft after. I think its only available in canada though.
