    Default "Crazy Horse" (the name)

What's with the name "Crazy Horse"? It's used for many strip clubs, not all of which seem to be related. Including the Paris club that's been there for over 50 years.

And there's a clothing line. A beer. A band (Neil Young).

I know that Crazy Horse was a Lakota leader, and about Custer and Battle of the Little Bighorn, etc.

But why is the "Crazy Horse" name so fashionable in popular culture?

(Maybe this is a stupid question, but as an immigrant some aspects of American culture still mystify me!)

I'm not sure about where the original Paris cabaret got its name, but I think that its safe to say all the Crazy Horse clubs here in the states use the name to pay homage to that.

I remember some years back, a guy wanted to open up a strip club with the name Crazy Horse in Sioux City, IA, and the Native Americans around there got in an uproar about it because they thought it was an insult to their heritage, not realizing that the name refers to something completely unrelated.

I just did a bit of reading up on the background. It appears that the founder of the Paris club, Alain Bernardin, was fascinated with the old west and wanted to do an american style strip show, wheres I presume all of the Paris clubs were more like the Follies Bergere Parisian style (http://www.art.com/asp/sp-asp/_/pd--10077271/sp--A/Bar_at_the_FoliesBergere.htm).

Thus Crazy Horse was a tribue to the original indian Lakota leader. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_Horse

I like how the Lakota women could divorce their men just by throwing his shit out of the teepee...

The popularity of the name began when a London bar took the name of "Crazy Horse Saloon" and tried to tie it in with the Paris establishment. Bernadin sued. Also, descendants of chief Crazy Horse have also sued, or attempted to sue, many of the establishments/pro carrying his namesake. They successfully got it pulled from a malt liquor, but the Supreme Court determined that the name was not protected. There are lots of links:

I'm from the worst country in the world right now. Lowest life expectancy (37 years for men, 34 years for women), highest rate of inflation (ca. 1000%), and included in the Forbes annual ten "Most Dangerous Destinations" profile (and currently in 7th place-- with Iraq 1st -- in the reader poll for "Which country would you like to visit least?").

It's not something I like to admit to.

I'm sure glad to be here in the U.S. !!

And thanks for the Crazy Horse info!
