    Default Old self-mutilation scars

i am going to become a dancer, but i have some scars on my upper arms and legs from where i used to cut myself several years ago. i'm over the self-mutilation, but i don't know if my scars will be a problem. if i tell customers the truth, will i come off as a psycho? my friend who used to strip says i should make up a story for them (crazy ex who held me down and cut me, etc.). is this too crazy? any other suggestions?

Get dermablend and cover them... worse comes to work and someone asks just say you were in a car accident or something....

i forgot to say that a few of these scars are 2-3 inches long and about half a centimeter thick... they are also raised on my skin a little, so they'd be almost impossible to fade or cover.
they're horizontal and parallel, so it would be hard to discribe them as an accident.

people do look at me funny when i say they were from my cat, so it is hard to deal with. you could get scar stuff from a drugstore though, or if theyre real bad you could maybe talk to a sergeon or something? i dont know, mine arent as bad as yours sound. just say you got attacked by your dog when you was giving it a bath. thats what i say. im glad you dont do it anymore. i used to do the same thing, so i understand what u went through....terrible experience.

    Mederma. It should help.
Don't tell people something like that. If nothing else it makes them uncomfortable, and it is just excessive information. Like when someone says "so how are you" I don't NEED to respond "Well, I'm having a particularly heavy period" even if it's true. Say you were in an accident, full stop, no details.

Remember, scars and marks are much less noticeable to everyone else compared to how prominent you think they are. The dim light in clubs definitely helps with that.

Fishnet stockings, shirts, and arm-warmers can do a huge amount to hide skin imperfections like this by breaking up lines. Since they're on your arms and legs, it's a little harder to hide, but obsuring either one set or the other will make them less noticed, most likely. Maybe try some cute outfits with sleeves, shawls, shrugs, etc, or go the stockings, stockings, stockings route (or both!).

If they're seriously huge and raised, such that they'll be noticeable even with Mederma, you'll want to have a quick and easy cover story that you can say in a few seconds before moving on to happier stuff. With all cover stories, remember, don't say any more than you absolutely have to. Mention being in a car accident or suchlike, and move on immediately! And yes, a car accident can give you parallel (though not usually horizontal) slashes if you get thrown through a windshield. Most people won't think of the "wait-a-second, the angle's all wrong!" thing, so just let it lie. While some guys may just eat up a story about an abusive ex-boyfriend, it seems like it would tend to attract the sort of would-be Knights in Shining Armor that are such a pain in the ass to deal with.

Use a good cover-up, have a story primed, and don't bring it up unless the customer specifically asks. In all likelihood, almost nobody will ask. (I went to work two days after I'd gotten a nickel-sized second-degree burn on my wrist, and nobody noticed it despite the nasty blister and pink skin -- people are stupid!)

yea thats what i meant...just a quick "oh thats what i get for throwing my cat in a bath tub!" and casually laugh it off. i mean i dont go into a life story about it or anything...but if the scratches are obviously not from a car accident, dont tell them that or theyre gonna know your lieng and they will think your phsyco like your trieng to avoid.

see i didnt think anyone would ask about my scars, but youd be surprised! and since it is bright in the dressing room, my house mom and everyone was asking about them. so you do need a convincing lie, or if youre not a good liar, you could just tell them you went through a hard time but your better now...and they might give you credit for being honest and strong about it, DEPENDING on how the people are at your club....people can be understanding but dont count on that because people do talk.

How about tattoing over the scars? I'm planning on doing that once I decide on a design.

I've seen some tattooing done over existing scars, and it didn't look all that great. Something about the texture of the scar tissue, I think. Then again, it could've just been that one person's body, too. My wife had open heart surgery and we were discussing getting a zipper or something similar tattooed over the scar down her chest and the artist said she wouldn't recommend it for similar reasons. It's a cool idea though.

    id play dress ups!

get, say a cowboy costume which has those forearm things with tassles on it (doesnt look conspicious) and the chaps would hide your legs. even if its a nude club, wear your g ont he outside of the chaps and remove that only. not the pants

opaque stockings works a charm too. last year i got some nasty bite thing all over my lesga and they scarred nasty when they went away. for the first few months i was paranoid as hell, so i wore opaques with everything!! schoolgirl costumes look cute with them...ummm...

yeah id just find a way around them if the bothered me that much.

I'd suggest wearing gloves to offset them (even just lacey ones), derma blend actualy is pretty thick from my understanding. also things like self tanners/shiny lotions will help reduce their apperance. also...theres a product called mederma that is supposed to make scars more subtle over time, i need to pick some up myself. i thought i was the only SI sufferer here its funny where we pop up. congrats for stopping, it is the hardest thing i've ever tried.

I have old self mutilation scars on my arms too. Fortunately they're only noticeable in very well lit circumstances.

A round of cortisone/kenalog injections will flatten the scar. So would pulsed dye laser treatments or IPL. Inquire with your dermatologist.

my scars are about 3 years old.
thanks for all the suggestions... i can't afford any type of medical procedures, but i'll probably try the mederma (or however it's spelled). as far as the story goes... i might be able to say it was a car accident in dark lighting.
but if anybody else has any more suggestions, i'd still love to hear them.

    Spooky,

I'm truly glad that you've gotten over what ever was causing your SI. I'm also very glad that you raised the question because I have very similar scars though not so numerous. I've got 7 horizontal scars on my upper thighs on the outside (just a few inches lower then where you would find normal stretch marks from hip growth) They are each 2.5 inches long and spaced about 1/4 of an inch apart. I also have keloids or hypertrophic scarring so one mark on each leg (I ended up cutting a second time because the first cut wasn't deep enough...) now has raised scars that wil be visable the rest of my life whereas the other six are fading with time.

In my situation though I just say that I went through a rough patch in my life, got some help, and moved on. If they press for details I just tell the truth that someone close to me died and I'd rather not talk about it. People usually don't want to know or are respectful of your wishes, especialy if you've gotten help already and are over it they let the subject go. Some are ust concerned about your health so press the issue.

I think you'll have to go by each individual instance and just go by feel. Good luck to you and I know you'll be fine.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the thread, I just joined.

I've found that the only way to really get rid of (or at least fade) old scars without a medical procedure is to tan them away. I had some on my arm, and I made sure that whenever I was out in the sun (don't know if other tanning methods work for this), my arm was out there to catch it. When the skin got darker from tanning, the scars could no longer be seen, and when the tan eventually faded off, most of the scarring was gone too.

I don't know how well it will work for the raised scars. It won't flatten the skin back, but it may help with any discoloration.

Hope that will help someone. And of course, don't forget sunscreen.

car accident, motorbike accident (won't work if they're evenly distributed), or make up some story about some lesbian cult where this was the hazing (and then offer to tell them the more salacious details in VIP). -shrug- I have a couple natural made scars and some guys think they're cool, but I think I get away with that more because I don't have any tattoos.
