Sad Stripping is making me OLD!!

yes, thats right! stripping is making me old!

For some reason, after a night of moderate to "high-impact" stage shows, drinking, fake flirting, and walking up and down those damn flights of stairs in 7 inch heels, the next few days i am SORE and my joints crack and the WORST thing is my knees! My poor knees will be so sore and its hard to bend down and get the paper and letters off the floor, or even to pick up my dog! On stage I rarely go on my knees, and if I do, I do it carefully and make extra sure not to rock back and forth. I am very much concerned about my body and the way I care for it. Maybe this is just a problem I should take up with my physician... Please tell me if you feel the same way after working. But this problem is severely interfering with my money. The pain is soo bad that I am unable to work again until I give my body time to rest and repair... Maybe stripping is not the 'great workout' that I thought it would be?!?

I feel the same way. When I bend down to pick up something from the floor, I have to ease on down to do it haha. Hell, I've only been dancing 5months. These aching joints *and most recently the back pain* have been so much that I'm convinced being a "career stripper" just aint in the cards for me.

I just bought me a bottle of fish oil pills. THey're suppose to lubricate the joints and increase collagen. Give those a try. I too have knee joint problems when I work out. I'm not dancing anymore, but always had this problem. Also when you're free take a hot sea salt bath.

I believe on body preservation. Take your vitamins, workout, dont drink/party too much, eat good and everything else to stay alive longer and better. The job can run you down but you also have to build yourself back up. Be good to those knees...do anything you can!

How long have you been dancing?

my back continued to bother me for over a year after I quit dancing. If you dance long enough, the aches and pains still continue for a long time. They did for me. My spine still isn't 100%. It constantly needs to be stretched. And when I stretch, it cracks...like my vertabrae just crack in succession like a whole bunch of knuckles. It's gross. But I HAVE to do it at LEAST a couple times a day.

I hear that glucosamine does wonders for joints. I'm going to try it soon. I already take loads of supplements so I feel weird about adding more...

While your body does toughen up at some point to some of the abuses we expose it to, if you're constantly on your knees doing floorwork, you may want to wear kneepads underneath thigh-high boots or something. Or just avoid being in a position that calls for your knees on the floor.

may I just add that this is exactly the reason why some girls appear to put on a lackluster performance. They go for the super slow movements because it's so much easier on the body particularly when they're doing it over and over night after night.

Bwhahahaha, you girls... This is just like the Technicians in my auto repair garage complaining. Now listen up.. you have to get a stiff upper lip and take your aspirin and get that MONEY! All joking aside, you work very hard for your money. Don't ignore your bodies when you are in pain. Get treatment when you start getting pain like you are describing in this thread. it only gets worse, girls.

I do Pilates and work out regularly. After working a couple of nights Pilates helps stretch my sore muscles out. I find it more mentally exhausting then physically a lot of times though personally.

All these suggestions are great! Good food, good Pilates, good fishie oil.

I've not been stripping long at all, but I've been dancing (modern) pretty much my whole life. Glucosamine and chondroitin as a combination are all they're cracked up to be. Best way of taking it, IMO, is in the Emergen-C packets. Know how they come in different flavors? They also feature different supplements. So having a packet or two while dancing kills several birds with one stone - they already have vitamins B and C, plus some electrolytes, plus it's forcing you to drink water and stay hydrated, and now you can get your G&C fix, too! The glucosamine and chondroitin combo comes in both regular and lite.

I also swear by both arnica gel and Traumeel gel (which has some arnica in it) for bruising. If you're really in pain, keep some ice packs at the ready and apply them as soon as you can after a shift. Not heat, because if inflammation is part of the problem (and it often is, especially around the joints), heat will actually aggravate it. Ice will both help the pain and will treat the inflammation. Hot baths are GREAT for sore muscles, for sure - I'd reserve those for the next day IF possible.

Finally, yes, ibuprofen at the end of the night. Definitely not aspirin or Tylenol if you can help it - though if you're in pain and that's all you have, of course take those. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.), like ice, not only relieves pain but is an anti-inflammatory, therefore it actually addresses the problem itself, not just treating the symptom.

    FEEL BETTER! Take good care.

Like others said, work out a lot.Do a ton of cardio, elliptical machine or threadmill, that strengthens your body and your pains should go away.Take vitamins and no junk food.

First late nights will make you look very tired! Second, smoke in the clubs can kill you, but will age you. Third the heels we wear are not good for feet..period. Fourth, drinking (if you do) is also not good if you consume too much, only you know that. Fifth smiling all the time to get your hustle causes wrinkles, i.e. laugh lines! I could go on. But you get the hint.

Best bet, get fresh air often. TRY to work in a club that pays well so you can take more days off. ALSO face make-up does more than even out skin tone...it protects! Vit. C acts as a natural histamine blocker and helps our bodies inside to stay healthier!

But all this said....YES being a dancer can add many years on you. It's the environment and the hours along with the fast paced hustle. All of which we don't need, it's added stress inside and out. It shows!

PS ok, i see i came in from another way of dancing and age, but it's all still the same. Yes, the 7" heels are made for looks, not long hours of wear!

^^That's funny. I feel like quite a few...no, a lot...of the thirty something (and forty something) dancers look BANGIN'!!! I think it's becasue they get that good workout (and don't drink a lot). Yeah, maybe some bones creak here and there, but hell I wanna look like some of those women when I'm in my late thirties/early forties!!

What helps after a long night of wearing heels
    for back
    1) have 2-3 pairs of different heel heights and switch around
    2) get your core (abs, back) muscles as strong as possible
3)get a body ball (those 65 inch exercise balls) and roll over it untill your shoulderblades and the top of the spine are flat on the floor and your hips are on the ball.
    for ankles
    sorry- no clue!

chill out on stage! i try to focus on eye contact more then crazy moves, its more personal to guys. pole work is cool but past a few extra bucks on stage it cant ehlp with that "one on one" feeling guys are after.

cut back on drinking, i stopped drinking at work and feel soo much better.

i take some vitamins at work, vitamine c, and royal gelly in honey for energy.

eat enough, the extra tummy is worth not looking and feeling haggard. (same with water)

dont waist energy with guys who wont spend money, i have trouble doing this cuz i get bored but its just stealing energy from they guys that will spend money.

and sometimes i nap at work, just for 10- 15 minutes with my head down in the dressing room but it helps me collect my self.

    good luck

what about cutting caffeine intake? i heard if you're addicted and you quit, you gain so much more energy and are less tired during the day

i do yoga three nights a week, take the olay daily energy vitamin packs, i have a set of gellin's in every pair of shoes i have (if anyone knows a better brand let me know, you can never be too comfortable). also my house mom brings a variety of foods, one of which is a veggie tray, so rather than grab the chips or homade goolash (which is hard to resist but usually i give in for a small portion) i grab a handful of carrots, cucumber, broccoli with the ranch dip to get some veggie in my system. i eat well before i go in, then stick with the veggies or the fruit basket to snack on. i've also read somewhere that if you eat 1/2 a cup of assorted nuts or walnuts, cashews, before you go to bed it promotes brain activity. that will make you feel a little fresher when you get up the next day. it has worked for me so it could not hurt to throw that in. i've heard good things about accupunture, and going to get a weekly massage (or more than once a week depending on you). take at least one day for yourself each week. do something that relaxes you and makes you feel good. i also take half an hour by the open back door next to the dressing room to get fresh air and be away from the chaos. it helps me get through the night. i hope you find all the replies and advice helpful.

Mine were like that for the first six months or so of stripping. Then I took a long break for a couple of months and when I came back, they no longer hurt anymore. Let them heal up totally and then come back to stripping... your body is broken down, but when it heals, it will be stronger.

thanks to eveyone for your tips and advice! I have been dancing for about 5 months now, and I never knew that in addition to tearin it up on stage, that I am also supposed to workout on top of that! I am going to gnc tomorrow with a list of some of the vitamins you all suggested I should try. I am going to take up either yoga or pilates and try to heal myself more. work SURE IS HARD, but it seems like with a little more rest, and more attention to my body, things will start looking up!
