    Default Help...FAST!

I have talked to doctors at the hospital. Forget it..

I have for the past 2 months had throat problems. I can't get my voice back to normal..I am hoarse..

Now i found out (by listening to my body) that it seems i have Acid Reflux. I have burning in the throat with a full feeling. I will burp up burning stuff, and feel better. Short term.

Anyone have heartburn? It's bad at times. I am looking for a diet that is bland also...if anyone knows about what NOT to eat to help ease the burn. Also what is good to take over the counter (that worked for you) I will ask the pharmacy as well, i am on heart meds. BUT, this IS not heart related. It is usually ater a bowl of ice cream...onions, tea, etc.

    HELP.

Yes, that does sound like Acid Reflux. I always kept mylanta by my side. Certainly don't eat spicy foods, peppers, pop. Basically anything that can make you feel the need to burp I'd avoid.

Zantac. Also sleeping with my head properly elevated. Lots of bananas. Avoid coffee and citrus fruits and juices.

I used to have this all the time. I'm not sure if acid reflux is curable, but I went onto a completely vegan diet. After everything else I tried, it was the only thing that worked. I had what I called a "radioactive" stomach and no pills, drinks, anything worked until I went vegan and cut out all "commercial foods".

I had a very bland diet for a while...no seasonings...nothing. Just plain, organic foods. It was hard at first, but it helped "cleanse" my body to the point that I could start slowly adding things back into my diet to see exactly what the trigger food was.

    Very helpful.

I know my trigger foods now and just avoid them. I'm not on a bland vegan diet anymore and I haven't had stomach or any "radioactive" problems since.

Pamela, my grandfather has had something like this since his early 30's (so for about 30 years). He went to countless doctors / specialists / etc. He's very secretive and quiet about his health problems, so I don't know all of the details, but a new study, or something, came out about a year or two ago, that people were getting a rare disorder with their throat, causing inflammation and hoarseness and a constant feeling of having to clear your throat and the only link they could find after years and years of these (and other) symptoms was using public (i.e. fitness clubs etc) hot tubs and such. Last I heard, they were testing common chemicals used and different treatments. Although he hasn't talked about it much, I have noticed that he has seemed to get better ever since finding this out and seeing new doctors.

So I don't know if any of this makes any sense, but maybe it's something you could ask about or look into.

Oh, let's see, there's this book that teaches you how to do an elimination diet (for general purpose food allergy and sensitivity finding) and I'm trying to remember the title ...

    *checks Amazon*

    Ah, here it is!

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/089...Fencoding=UTF8

Very frequently with digestive problems it is one or two types of protein (bean proteins, milk, and glutens are the most frequent culprits, but it can be other things as well) that the body is having trouble processing.

If it is after a bowl of ice cream, that points to milk somewhat. That's a difficult one to eliminate, as it's found hidden everywhere. I have a site that I put together after we figured out the source of my spouse's mysterious digestive illness, which cleared up after he cut out dairy, but it was hard, as even a tiny bit of whey protein in a cookie could screw him up for weeks.

Yours could be other things too, so I would really recommend a full elimination diet first. The book gives you all kinds of useful information, like how long it takes for different kinds of reactions to stop and why.

Two tablespoons of apple cider vineger. Preferably organic, but the other stuff works.

Somehow the acidity un-acidifies your stomach... doesn't make any sense, but it works.

Well, my mom has this, along w/other gastro probs. She takes, (via Dr's advice) Prylosec, which is over the counter. I have an ulcer, not in stomach, but the stomach tube so sometimes I get indigestion. For which I sometimes take chewable papaya enzyme, from the heath store. I also drink carbonated mineral water.

    Pamela,
Try the over the counter meds like tagamet, pepcid and prilosec every day as a preventative. Use the maalox and mylanta as "rescue med" when things get bad. Put some wooden blocks under the feet at the head of the bed (just a couple of inches). After eating, don't lie down immediately, but take a 10 minute walk to encourage things to move "down" instead of back up your throat. As for diet, I advise my patients to avoid: chocolate, tomato products, alcohol, peppermint, spicy foods, as well as acidic foods like orange juice. ( I know, all the good stuff) I have horrible reflux as well. After a while, you will figure out your triggers and can add things back in if they don't trigger your reflux.

If, after a month, you are still having problems, I highly recommend getting yourself to a GI doc for an upper GI endoscopy. Persistent reflux has been linked to Helicobacter bacteria in the stomach and can be treated with antibiotics. Persistent reflux (over the course of a lifetime) has also been linked to Barrett's esophagus (a narrowing of the esophagus) which can eventually lead to cancer.

    Good luck

I would say that boxingdoc knows what she's talking about.

Sadly, avoiding alcohol and caffeine is also recommended.

The histamine antagonists and proton pump inhibitors (all now available OTC) should provide longer-lasting relief than antacids such as Mylanta, etc. (I worked on the development of one of the PPI's, so I'm not really unbiased.)
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

I learned a long time ago there's no sense getting all riled up every time a bunch of idiots give you a hard time. In the end, the universe tends to unfold as it should. Plus I have a really large penis. That keeps me happy.

Thanks everyone! Guess what, this may be strange but here goes.....I have been LIVING on peanut butter and toast every morning, afternoon and evening...so i had a lump feeling in my throat today, called my doctor. Told him about the diet (again) and he said peanut butter will stick to the throat....Stop the peanut butter for 2 weeks, then eat very little. This may have had alot to do with my throat!!!!!!

If not i need to go in he says....(yuk)

Yes -- hope it works! If not remember the elimination diet idea. Digestive problems are 9 times out of 10 a sign that your body can't handle the food you're eating, and finding the source is always better than just medicating like crazy. You live longer when you're getting the nutrients you need.

So far so good!!!! No peanut butter for me for a time. And then only once a week....crazy how shit works, but it seems to be going away now with no meds for it.

Hmm i will try a day of peanut butter toast next week again, and see what happens.

    Odd...i never knew.
