    Default Oh, my poor baby!!

She complained Wednesday that she was feeling "all itchy". I checked her over and didn't find anything, so I put some lotion thinking it was dry skin.

Well, yesterday I put her down for a nap at around 1:30pm and she fell asleep about 2pm. AND SLEPT FOR 4 HOURS. I wanted to wake her up, but it's so unlike her that I let her sleep...knowing that something was going on. I checked on her a few times and she was doing fine...snuggled under the covers.

After she woke up, she came down stairs, and told me that she felt itchy again. I had my back turned and when I looked at her I gasped. She was COVERED, COVERED with little red bumps.

She got Chicken Pox!!! I ran to the store and bought Benadryl, Aveeno Oatmeal Bath and Calamine Lotion.

She didn't sleep well all night and now I know it goes on for 7-10 days!!!! Also that the 3rd and 4th days are the most severe (itching wise).

I feel so bad for her because I remember how horrible it was for me when I had it. Ick.

The upside is, at least she doesn't miss any school.

Awwww poor baby I remember when I caught the chickenpox. My mom was slick with it though. My baby sister had them before me. My mom told me to get in a picture with her haha my mom was like, "no get closer" she was trying to make me catch the pox so I guess I could get it over and done with.

Man, the ability to follow directions (DO NOT SCRATCH) at age 6 was so trying for me. It was torture. But omg to scratch was like heaven!!

I hope she feels better VG.

Awwww! Poor Makayla! My Son got them when he was in Kindergarten because one of his classmates was sent to school with them in long-sleeve shirts so they'd be covered and no one would notice. Grrr. So, it ran its course (I kept him home for a week). I thought my oldest Daughter was in the clear, but she woke up on Xmas morning.. COVERED in them.

Benadryl works wonders, and Aveeno baths too.

I have a scar just above my left eyebrow from the bastids. I scratched the hell out of them. I got them at 11. The next year, my younger brother & sister came down with them, and I got SHINGLES. Grr!

Did she ever get the vaccine? When Delia was 6 months old, it was pretty much a requirement with her routine shots. I'm just curious because I don't have much faith in that vaccine. It's still too new to me.

Give her a hug from me!

Makayla is not vaccinated. The only thing she got vaccinated for is Whopping Cough because we had a small outbreak in our area and our doctor (who doesn't push vaccines) strongly urged us to vaccinate against it since Whopping Cough is so bad.

Now, through doing research...the Chicken Pox vaccine does not prevent Chicken Pox. What it does is prevent it in Childhood. But, a child who gets the vaccine can still get it as a teenager or even as an adult (CP can be deadly as an adult). The Chicken Pox vaccine was made as an "answer" for today's society where we have single parent families and families who have 2 working parents. It was made because a lot of families cannot take the time off for the CP (which runs from 7-10 days). That's all. A child who is vaccinated can still get the CP in childhood, but it is very, very rare. A child who is vaccinated against the CP can still give it to others (which is how I suspect Makayla got them).

The thing that pisses me off the most about the CP vaccine is that it is preventing a "disease" that is not deadly in childhood. It is surely an inconvenience but it is not deadly. The vaccine is also only about 5 years old (or thereabout) and so they do not know what side-effects, if any, it has and won't for about another 20 years. I also think they have been dishonest in the distribution and education of the vaccine. If they were to have told parents..."This is a vaccine so your child will not have CP in childhood, meaning that you will not have to stay home from work. If you do not get this vaccine, your child will eventually get CP. However, the risks of your child getting CP in adulthood could be more severe. What do you want to do?" Instead, they just say it innoculates the child from CP (which is sort of true, but not really).

The good thing about Makayla getting them is that she won't have anything to worry about and me being exposed during my pregnancy means that baby is being innoculated and most likely will not get the chicken pox ever (because baby is being immunized in utero).

Exactly.. I told Delia's old doctor that I preferred her to get the Pox and be done with it because I don't really trust the vaccine. She urged me to, so I did.

The only vaccination I made it a point to get my 2 oldest was the Meningitis. It was due to the major outbreak in our area in the late 90s, because THAT, is life threatening.

Yeah, I bought a few boxes of it. It's worse at night...She sleeps for about 3-4 hours before she wakes up crying of itching again.

OMG...I know of one other person who this happened to! It's so rare...but that must have sucked!!

I had a few scars on my face, as well. They've pretty much grown out...but if I look really closely, I can see the faint outline of them (one under my eye and one right next to my lip). My parents literally taped oven mitts to my hands with duct tape because I was scratching so bad. My brother got them after I did, but it wasn't as bad.

Give her a hug from me!

I will most definitely do that. Thanks!

VG, please tell us that you are immune? Have you have it before? If you're not sure, you need to get to your doc to get a blood test to check. There is a slight risk to the baby if you catch it in the first half of pg..

Aww Chicken pox are my most vivid memory of preschool. I don't have any advice... the only thing I remember my mom doing is patting me with calamine lotion and yelling at me, "DONT SCRATCH!!" and "YOURE NOT SCRATCHING ARE YOU?!"

aww poor little girl! chicken pox suck! I remember having them, but can't remember how awful it was to itch. We didn't get the vaccine for kearra and I am not going to. I think it's unecessary and we don't know any adverse long term side effects of it yet.
I'll take my chances with the chicken pox...i survived and so did everyone else i knew!

I took some pics of her...the good thing is that she doesn't have them in her hair.

She's doing remarkably well...I've got some of her dancing videos going, we're going to fingerpaint, color, I'll take her outside and let her play on her slide if she's feeling up to it...then give her some lunch (although I noticed she's not got an appetite).

Did any of your kids lose the appetite with Chicken Pox? I looked in Makayla's mouth and she doesn't have anything in there (My mouth and throat were covered and so I only drank those breakfast shakes for about 2 weeks...horrible). But, she only wants "watery" things. I will call her doctor and ask about this, but figured I'd get some info from you guys, as well.

When I get my computer hooked up again, I'll post the pics (I'm on scorpio's computer).

Yep.. Both Matt & Steffi didn't want to eat for a few days. Just push fluids, and maybe try some toast, fruit, little things throughout the day. Keeping her hydrated is the most important thing. As long as she's drinking, she'll be alright until her appetite returns. Getting her outside will do her some good though, and might make her build up a little appetite.

If you want, you can try Pedialyte. Gatorade is just as good though and doesn't cost up the pooper. Pediasure is good, if you're really worried about her not eating.

The poor baby though.. The Pox are tough for little ones.

My older sister lucked out and got them when she was about 6 months, so she didn't even notice them.

If she does end up getting a few in her throat, that'll help a bunch.

I've got the Pediasure...and she'll drink some of that, but she hates, hates, hates Pedialyte and Gatorade. In fact, when Joe came home with Pedialyte last time she was sick she started crying.

I did go out and buy the 100% all natural, all fruit, no sugar added popsicles (which she's eating quite a bit of).

I just wanted to make sure her loss of appetite would be ok. She's drinking lots of water and eating salt-free crackers...

I can't wait until this is over.

Oh I hear ya.. I was a total worrier when it came to Matthew. He'd always had such a healthy appetite, and when he didn't eat I would freak out and try to push him. Stephanie, I didn't worry too much about because she had such a tiny appetite that I was lucky to get anything in her. Delia's the same way as Steffi was, unfortunately.. LOL

She eats on the run, too. So I just stash snacks in her path and she'll munch along.

I LOVE the All-Fruit pops! Kroger (The Grocery store I shop at here) always has them 2 boxes (24 individual pops in each) for $4. She gobbles them right up.

As long as Makayla's drinking and eating the crackers, she'll be alright. Just keep her peeing. I had to learn that instead of pushing.. LOL

I didn't get the chicken pox until I was 25! The worst week of my life! remember waking up with a few '"dots" on my stomache and feeling kinda crappy. Realized I had a slight fever and called my doctor who asked me a bunch of questions and then asked me if I ever had the chicken pox. After that it was all down hill, itching, hight fever, couldn't leave the house. Boy did life suck that week. Anyway, I'm so sorry Makayla feels "poopie" (that's what my son will say when he feels bad). I had him vaccinated for CP, so far so good. Keep your sweetie as comfortable as possible, and try not to fret, hydrated is more important than solids. Nothings worse than when your kid(s) are sick and all you can do is feel helpless. No magic wands for Moms. Hugs and kisses to her.

I was too young to remember my brother and I having chicken pox (my lucky bro only got 2 spots on his entire body, which was enough to make him immune), but I remember when our 4 other siblings got it all at once. The youngest sister came home with it, and mom ordered her to breathe on everyone. It was hellish, as they were all itchy and miserable. The tub was frequently occupied by kids taking Aveeno oatmeal baths.

Is it just me, or does everyone's mom make kids get maximum exposure to chicken pox when one kid gets it? I just found out that these are called "pox parties," although they used to apply to other one-time diseases like measles, mumps, whopping cough, etc.

A lot of my SAHM friends came by after finding out Makayla had the pox. LOL It's better to get the pox as a child, it's less stressful on the body. But, it was nice...she wasn't really in the mood to deal with anyone (and I don't blame her) but she was happy that they came by to see her. Lifted her mood a bit.

Being that the vaccine is so new, there is no way to know how well it really works or what the side effects are. Even so, why get vaccinated for something that is not a "killer" in childhood? It's inconvenient and itchy, but you have it once and you'll never have it again.

Also, just because you get vaccinated for the pox doesn't mean you won't get them.

It is very, very, very rare to get chicken pox more than once. In 99% of the cases, once you get CP, you are immune for life from CP. You can still get shingles in adulthood, but you probably won't get CP again in childhood. If you did, you are one of the rare and few...just like it is very rare for a child to get shingles.
