Default "What do you do for fun?"

I get this quesion a lot and have given a variety of answers to it. Truthfully, on my nights off I often just watch movies, talk to long distance friends on the phone or read a book. Definitely nothing interesting or what the customers want to hear.

I know they often want to see you as a party girl. What kinds of answers do you get the best responses from? Often when I say "Oh I party a lot with my friends" they start asking where I go and all that.

Fuck I hate that question. I'm looking forward to hearing everyones answers.

I've tried everything from "I'm really boring, I stay home and blah blah blah" (truth) to "I like to go party with my girlfriends, pick up guys..." (lie). Tonight I said I like to watch hockey, and went off on a tangent about that. It seemed to work OK, but of course you have to know about the sport you say you like!

One good technique is to see if you can identify anything on the customer that might give you a "tell." In other words, is he wearing a logo shirt from a sports team? Does he have anything on him that might indicate movies, sports, computer games, comic books, anything. Then, when he asks you, just respond according to what his tell is. It's a really powerful means of gaining rapport. Just make sure you can back up your claim.

We get a lot of guys from out of town, so I say I like to travel- then I can get them to tell me about where they've been, and where their favourite places are, etc. It really opens a lot of guys up. Plus, it's genuinely interesting (so I don't have to fake my attentiveness as much! ha).

I say this all the time to new dancers (and get it from them just as much). Its just a small talk question.

A lot of guys are very uncomfortable with objectification, so they actually like it when they hear how "boring" a dancer's life/hobbies are away from the club are. It helps humanize her and opens up some conversation.

-I build little, mini suspension bridges in my backyard, and then place my small dog into miniature cars, wearing little teeny goggles and zoom her back and forth across them. Once someone mentioned that in an ordinary backyard, a normal footbridge would do. I responded with a "Pfft! Where is the skill in THAT? And then I'd have to get me some billy goats to trot across it."

-This IS what I do for fun.

-Nothing. They actually keep us chained up in the back when we're not working. If I don't sell a certain number of dances they beat me with chains and force me to perform sexual acts on the bouncers.

    Gosh. I'm annoying, aren't I?

I say that there are three things I like to do: Watch my soaps, eat bonbons, and play with myself.

It's amazing how many customers think I'm serious. The ones that laugh are my new friends.

What's wrong with some version of the truth? When they ask me, I tell them I like to read and go to the movies, but outside of work, I pretty much just wanna relax...I think that works better than letting them think we're all party girls...I think it makes us seem more approachable, because it tells them we're just another normal girl, we're just sexy enough to come out and play naked.

The best thing is to be honest (cept for if you're being sarcastic/joking around like Jenny..that's awesome too) If you're honest you don't have to worry about talking about something you don't understand. However, what I did the first couple months I worked is respond with a different answer (a truthfull one, but I'd go a different route each time) and tried to figure out which ones got the best responses. Things I've said are...
    watch movies
    hang out with my friends
    play guitar
    see local bands/shows
    play pool
    work on my art
    go out to eat
    go swimming

I've found that the best responses I get (out of those things listed) are to
    play pool
    work on my art
    play guitar
    go see local bands/shows

I think it goes along with that dancer wealth is saying. Although things like movies, swimming and etc. are universal, a guy who can play pool loves talking to a girl who can. A guy who is really into music likes talking to a girl who is and esp. one who writes/plays instruments. I would say try to focus on whatever unique talents/likes/etc you have that seem to fit the guys personally. I just wouldn't suggest saying "I like to watch hockey!" because a guy is wearing a hockey jersey, if you know nothing about the game. I'm not implying that's what DW meant. I've just seen girls do that before. I have one regular who listens to a lot of old school industrial music. A dancer once asked him what music he listened to and when he told her she was like "OH I LOVE that stuff!" and then when he excitedly asked her what bands she drew a blank and got uncomfortable. The funny thing is, he probably would have bought dances from her if she'd focused on something they -did- have in common or just asked him to explain it to her. He thought she was really nice and cute untill she did that. After that he said all he saw were dollar signs in her eyes. We're supposed to keep those hidden! lol Also, since I tend to be alternative and fit the more goth/punk/etc scene, the fact that I love football helps me A LOT. I'm lucky in that aspect, because otherwise I usually have little in common with guys who aren't into music or who don't have tats and etc. I even buffed up my football knowledge after I started dancing just because of that fact. It's not that all guys are into football, but a vast majority of them are, so it helps.

As far as talking about sex goes, I only do that if they bring it up or if I already know the person. Maybe it's just me, but when I used to try to say sexually things when asked "what do you do for fun" the guy would almost always ask "with who" and then I either had to think of a lie or bring up my boyfriend. Then the guy is sitting there thinking of you and your boyfriend, which can be the loss of a sale.

I say I like to eat sleep and shop. Then they try to tell me they'd take me shopping, and I just say, "I hope you've got a good credit card"

I hate this question too. My truth is so boring. I'm going to starting building mini suspension bridges, I guess. That's freaking hilarious.

LMAO Jenny that is the BEST response either. I myself hate this question as well, I know it's just small talk, but it feels very invasive to me. (probably cuz I 1. boring, 2. wouldn't want them to know what/where i am going anyway)

I'm going to use the suspension bridges one. Or maybe the chained up in the back one.

Depends on my mood and the individual customer. Often my response is, "THIS! All I do outside of here is read and sleep. I have to come in here to really blow off steam!" Or, if they seem genuinely interested, I'll strike up a conversation about travel or classes - I really do travel a lot and I'm a perpetual student who likes to collect degrees. Sometimes I'll tell them I've got more degrees than I actually have. I do know a lot about the different fields I mention, so it leads to good conversation. If I can't be arsed getting into all that, I give an alternate true answer - I spend most of my time OTC with my writing and photography.

If it's the kind of customer who I very often attract - the guys who fall in lurve with me and want me to marry them and have all their children - I get really honest and say I spend most of my time OTC hanging out with my boyfriend. I don't recommend pulling this one out very often though!

"I sit at home and count your money. Excuse me, my money."

    or

    "Do? I don't do, honey. I am."

    or

"Nothing, silly. I only exist in your mind."

Actually, I'm with Molly. I say I like to travel and then we have an automatic topic of conversation. Unless I'm talking to someone who has clearly never been out of Bumblefuck, USA. I just ask these guys to tell me dirty jokes. Works like a charm.

The travel thing sounds good, except I usually like to work a dumber, less worldly angle...I've had guys get obviously intimidated (or something) when I've talked about travel. You guys don't find that?

Sad but true. So many customers want to satiate their (at base, insecure) male egos--not that some women don't have ego issues of their own sometimes--that they prefer the pliable, easily impressed, docile and cooperative 'sex toy' types.

But quite often it's better to avoid the worldly, confident, intelligent, and powerful female image--if you want them to feel like they are the ones in control, so they find you more appealing.

I have often mentioned the masturbation thing. ANY time you can gear a conversation toward sex, you have more of a chance at selling dances.

As far as making up 'hang out' places, I do this sometimes, depending on the customer. Since I live in Hollywood, it's easy for me to mention a handful of clubs I have been to once or twice but never really hang out in. I can come across as being a 'party girl' when I want to, and simply naming some rock n' roll bar on the Sunset Strip usually does the trick.

Other more intellectual guys like to hear about the various art projects I have done, movies I've seen, or books I have read. This is more rare, so I just stick to playing up the image of the party girl. I have tattoos and piercings, so this works better for me.

I agree that sarcasm can be useful in breaking the ice though. A little joke can go a long way.

I use the travel thing to my advantage as I am the tourist in the town so it appeals to them when I use travel in this context. It allows them to feel so great about being a local.. telling me about this place and that place... etc etc... and I still am able to play dumb stripper to them.

Generally, I only mention about travelling overseas or elsewhere in Australia if they seem to genuinely want to speak about that particular place.

Even if you are the local and the guy is the tourist... say you havn't really travelled outside your county much and would love to know more about (blank) for instance.

Other topics I use are movies and sex. Sex is definately one of those topics you want to use with care and not with every patron (possible customer).
