    Default HELP!! Wireless networking

Ok...so I have a wireless network at our house. The main router is on my computer downstairs. The "wireless" card is on scorpio's computer upstairs. Now, when I put our router in (my computer) I 'secured' it so that not just anyone could use the internet from it.

All is fine and good. I just tried to hook scorpio's computer (new wireless card) and tried to log onto our secured network. It asked for a passcode: this is where I get confused. When I secured our router, I got a WPA Network Key (it's like 64 letter/numbers long). I printed that page up and used the same passcode to log onto our secured 'router'. It keeps telling me that "The Network passcode needs to be 40 bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters."

What the fuck does that mean? I can gain access to the internet right now because it appears that I have a few neighbors with an unsecured wireless router...but I really prefer to be on my own secured router...

    HELP!!!!!!

I think it means that your network is so secure that even you, yourself can't access it.

    Congratulations!

There are multiple types of wireless security.

You may want to try some of the WEP protocols - there is a 40 bit and 128 bit if I remember right. My 2wire router has such a selection.

Most routers have a web interface to change these around. Have you tried that?

    LOL You're thilly!

We do the wireless networking thing here too. Whenever the power goes out or something, we have to reset both computers with the passcode. It's a bitch. I'm not sure what's going on with yours, that error is weird.

Unsecured Networks crack me up though. While we were offline, my Best Friend had taken me over to the college to use his Laptop and their wireless internet, and on the way back to my house, he showed me how easy it was to log on to unsecured networks. He just left the windows open, and between the college and my house (which is probaby about 10-15 miles), He had like 80 networks he could've tapped into. Scary stuff.

Actually, VG, if you look on the bottom of the wireless router you will see the WEP key. Just enter that key when asked. And you'll be all set.

Most wireless routers come with a wep security key from the factory nowadays so your neighbors can't hop a free ride on your internet connection. Although, I've heard of ways to crack wep encryption, I haven't done that myself yet.

I can't find a password on the bottom of the router. I mean, there is a password to START the connection, but I've already changed that password.

I'll go do a little more fiddling with the other computer...before I just chuck the whole damn thing out the window. LOL

Maybe the WEP key is in the instructions manual. However, it's usually found on a label on the bottom of the device. It is a 12 or 16 digit alpha-numeric key.

Looks like the router is using WPA and the computer is using WEP. They're completely different protocols. You should try re-configuring one or the other so they match.

    should not be too hard.
like above make sure the router and wireless computer have same protocol ( WEP or WPA)
    WEP is simpler.
    for HEX (which uses 0-9,A-F)
    1231231231 - is 10 characters long

on a netgear home router i saw one confusing thing. you enter a password and it generates a key for you. your original password is not the real password.

Yes, the FBI showed off a tool that broke into a 40 bit WEP network in under ten minutes. They were able to establish a new connection, but not yet (at the time) able to decipher communications occuring on the network.
