    Default Club Safety

Ok, so after much debating, I have finally decided that this summer I'm going to dance. I'm really looking forward to it!

I've heard of the occasional situation where a dancer is followed, stalked, or worse by a customer, and I was wondering how often this kind of thing happens. I'm assuming not too often, or else no one would want to work at an SC.

Are there usually bouncers watching when the dancers leave and go to their cars? Or do you usually have to leave with someone else or enlist in the help of a bouncer?

You can be stalked, followed, or worse regardless of if you're a dancer or not. Most clubs the bouncer walks you to your car and does not enter back into the club until you have left the parking lot. Food for thought...

Even if you are escorted to your car you should still remain aware of what's going on around you as you drive home.

An interesting bit I learned about stalkers when I still danced: Often they will follow you only part way...right when you start to think "hey, I think this person is following me" then they turn off and leave you alone. What you don't realize is that several days later they will pick up the trail from that halfway point and continue to follow you the rest of the way home. Something to think about.

Would it help not to take the same route home each time?

I take different ways home every night. I live pretty close to the club, so I try to switch it up a bit so no one figures out where I live.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

Always have an escort to the vehicle. Always watch the vehicles behind you, and if in doubt drive to the nearest police station...scares the shit out them...You know you are being followed, they know it too then.....Fuckers, i hated that shit.

always pay attention to who's behind you from the moment you leave the parking. even in the parking lot, pay attention to the cars and people around you. always carry a cell phone with you. take different routes home. if someone appears to be following you be prepared to call the police and drive back to the club or some other safe location. stop driving in the direction of your home (but don't get lost!)

also, and this is really important, if you are signaled to pull over by an unmarked car, do Not just pull over. turn on your emergency flashers (so they know you are planning to stop) dial 911 on your cell phone and tell the operator you are being stopped by an unmarked car. they will check for cops in your area and tell you if this is really an officer or not. even if it is, do not pull over in a quiet area. and wait until you get to a gas station or some other well lit, preferably populated location.

Yes, that does help and is in fact recommended. Like MadisonM, I also danced close to home and I would periodically switch it up and take different routes home.

There was an incident when I realized I was being followed (I was VERY close to home, a couple of streets away) and was forced to take evasive action (I felt soooo Charlie's Angels .) There was another incident when 2 girls from my club were followed home and robbed at gunpoint in the one girl's driveway. A totally extreme case, but this shit can and does happen.

You've asked a good question and people are giving you great advice. I would be especially leary about being signaled to pull over. Also minor car accidents. Those are ploys to get you to stop and puts you in a vulnerable position. Be safe and be aware.

During the two years I danced I was only followed three times, and of the three, only two really really freaked me out. And yes, pulling in to the police station is an excellent way to scare the shit out of them. Alternate your routes home and be VERY aware of whats going on around you.

I've been stalked twice and that was before I even considered dancing! There are a ton of crazy sick people out in this world and as a woman you need to always be on the look out. I think even when you're not coming back from the club because a perfect example; a couple years ago I saw this girl in Target who I recognized as a dancer because I remember seeing her in the club I went to as a customer. Obviously I didn't say anything to her or even acknowlege her but think if I had been a crazy regular of hers who just happened to see her? So it's always best to be aware of who's around you. And when I was stalked by those 2 different people, one of them followed me to a gas station (this man lived in my apartment complex) and showed up everywhere (when I got home, before I left work, he was always in my face) I gave me the creeps. The only way I was able to get him to leave me alone was I moved.

I think the best protection you can have is always keep a cell phone w/ you, call 911 if you have to, take a different way home each night, if you can maybe borrow a friend's car from time to time so they don't know it's you, carry maise (if it's legal). I don't know, anyone else think of any more?

never was stalked driving, but one time after leaving my brothers show i got stalked by some nutter. Drove to my brothers guitar player's house (where a few people were kicking it) and asked him to come out and bring his buddy. They are both big scary motherfuckers, so that did it for me. Other than that, carry pepper spray (NEVER EVER a knife or gun. Men are stonger, and chances are will get it away from you, so bend over because youre fucked)
and go to the local police/fire station or 711, dennys, or any other well lit, open 24-7 area.
