How much of your income will you have to give up? Australia is a welfare state like Europe, right?

Heh, I have dual citizenship between Japan and America. People always tell me to take Japanese citizenship because everyone hates America. Uh, out of the frying pan and into the fire? Most of Asian frickin' HATES Japan what with the WWII imperialism and the Rape of Nanking and stuff.

I hear ya on feeling badabout making fun of Americans. I'll be talking with Asian and Middle Eastern exchange students, and they'll be talking about dumb Americans, and I'll be like, "Uh, I'm half American." In high school, some teachers worshipped me b/c I'm not fully American. You know, because all Asians are genetically smart.

are you serious???? i'm an aussie and i've never heard anyone say anything bad about americans... i mean, everyine has little 'digs' at every nationality, they say the english are "Whinging Poms" , that the irish can't handle their drink, that indians are bad customers in general and that asians are always trying to discount. The only bad thing I hear about the u.s is that we joke sometimes about how everyone is trying to sue everyone else "judge judy style" or something like that.
Oh yeah.... and how the u.s sometimes forgets the rest of the world exists- but that comes with the territory of being the most powerful nation....right?

As pathetic as it is, every country/nationality, singles out different traits from other cultures around the world as it is unnatural behaviour to them.

i have never thought less of someone because they were born in america or any other country,

Be proud of your origins and never feel the need to hide who you are for the sake of appeasing someones racial ignorance.

if australians are giving you a hard time about being an american, we are the Dumb Australians
(whom i find are lazy 'yobbo's who don't know how to string a sentence together... eg: "oh, yeah, um, i dunno mate, >>scratches butt with bottle opener<<could'ya gettus anotha beer from tha eski 'n' shit?")

I would be proud about being from the same country as some of the fine role models you have instead of having 'Mick Dundee and F**king Steven Irwin, crocodile Hunter as your most famous exports. have a good night sweetheart.

Sorry lilithmorrigan but renouncing citizenship wont change a thing in my opnion. Its not like you would be able to sit there and say "I'm not american anymore, see my piece of paper that says so" and everyone will then magically never poke fun at you ever again.

this is something i've been thinking about alot lately too, as i am dating a guy from Australia and i've been considering moving over there eventually.

but just because someone makes fun of where you came from, doesn't mean you should quit being American. No matter where you move or who you become, you will always be an American. You should be proud of that, not embarassed.

    just my two cents...

Honestly, don't do it unless forced to.
A citizenship opens doors and renouncing it is just dumb idea no matter what the reasoning is. They probably think you are not from australia because of your accent, not because you have a US passport at home. Nobody cares.

I'm an immigrant to Canada from Russia. I got my Canadian citizenship in nov 2001 and I won't renounce my Russian citizenship unless I'm forced to by very serious reasons. Even though my passport is expired.

Okay, here it is anyway...If you feel the need to change something about yourself just so you can conform to what others think is acceptable...there is a much bigger issue here than your citizenship. You need to love yourself and be confident enough in who you are! You should be able to brush off negative comments towards you. Who cares what others think!? If they can't get past the whole American thing, do you really want to be around someone that shallow anyway?!

Yes please revoke your Citizenship, if that’s your attitude towards it you don't deserve it.

More seriously; if you're going to make judgement decisions regarding your citizenship based on whether people are going to 'tease' you or not, then you don't understand what citizenship is.

Regardless, you are from America; people are going to know that no matter what some paper says. The action in your best interest is to get an Australian citizenship and keep your American citizenship.

    Wow how sad is this?

I completely agree with Lyssa Lynn and Eques.

If you give up your U.S. citizenship, I promise you will deeply, deeply regret it one day, (probably immediately) no matter how much you hate "being teased" now. (You're a grown woman, not a 10 year old girl!) It is one of the most sought-after things in the world. It won't be very easy to get it back, either. And don't kid yourself about how easy/hard it will be to visit family. It will be very hard.

Are you considering this because of some guy?

I can understand how you are feeling Lilith. Many of the actions of our country over the past several years are disgraceful and it does affect how other people in the world view and treat us as individual citizens. It can be hard to have to carry the label of war for profit and torture policies. But consider the fact that in a few years we will have a new leader who just might make choices for our country that will make you proud to be an American again.

Next time you get teased for being from the US remind them that these days the opinion polls show almost 70% of Americans do not approve of the choices Bush has made for our nation. Maybe try the "better late than never" approach. If that doesn't help remember that this too shall pass.
The essential humanity of men can be protected and preserved only where government must answer--not just to the wealthy, not just to those of a particular religion, or a particular race, but to all its people.

Don't renege your US citizenship, that would be foolish. Even if it gets you teased, a US passport can open alot of doors for you internationally. US citizens get alot less static than other nationalities when trying to cross international borders - plus as an American you will always have recourse to American Embassies when you are travling overseas. Though I could be wrong about this I dont believe that Oz has the same international diplomatic clout as the US. Like it or not, the world craps itself when an US tourist goes missing in a deep dark jungle somewhere.

Even if the current political situation in the US is complete shite, why drop out? I'm proud to be a living example of the fact that not all American citizens are asshats. Who knows, maybe someday the non-asshats will start voting and turn things around, and you will find it somewhat less awful to be an American.

Get the Australian passport for sure, then just put the US one in a safe deposit box somewhere and let it be your little secret

I've traveled a bit outside the borders, west, east, and south. I haven't run into resentment about my being an American - either by the people in those other countries, or by the Canadian, Mexicans, Aussies, Kiwis, Iranians, Argentinians, and Brits that I've met who have lived in my neighborhoods after they've immigrated to the U.S. It's not a valid worry.

You have to learn how to be proud. They pick on you because you look like a target. You're having a shitty time of it right now. Wait to get you no longer feel like a victim of life and no longer feel an unhealthy need to belong. You're too fragile to even consider something this big now. Deal with the break up first. Find some constructive distractions.

I've been teased for being "American" (ha!)- but whatever, big deal. Instead of going through the drama of renouncing your citizenship, why not just hire a coach to help you lose your accent? If you feel you have to do something to 'Australianize' yourself, that is.

Yes, Melbourne is a lot less rascist than Brisbane. Brisbane is unbelievably f**king rascist against Americans, and pretty much everyone else for that matter. My husband is American and he cops heaps of shit up here. He rarely had that problem in Melbourne, though alot of Asians do, which is stupid, we ARE in Asia. Australia is generally pretty rascist and i agree with you Aprilleigh, i would rather be identified with most Americans than Aussies. We are an embarrassing bunch of neanderthals, and are known as this internationally. I'm leaving this country due to its attitudes, and lack of sense. You want my citizenship Morrigan?

Chin up, you're just going to have to get used to it I'm afraid - I've been in Australia for 20 years this August and I'm still a Pom (-: Personally I think a bit of taunting makes you a much stronger person in the long run but it really doesn't bother me anyway. I grew up being one of about 10 people of colour in my home town in England, belive me being teased now for being English is nothing in comparrison. Btw - this is not racism since Americans, Kiwis and Poms are not races.
I would say that Americans cop it worse than us Poms or even the Kiwis actually, - without meaning to sound mean. I think everywhere Americans go outside of America there is going to be some anti-American feeling. I know britain was the same towards Americans when I grew up there. But on the other hand it must be said that every country has it's predudices against other countries. It seems to me that Americans don't favor the French too much right now for instance (- but then who does, lol?) Sorry, I just couldn't resist that one!
As for whoever it was who mentioned they hadn't heard of any anti-American feeling over here before - you obviously didn't watch the Glass House last week...
Amyways Morrigan, don't let it get to you. From my experience people get over it really fast once you start talking to them (-:

I'm glad Lucyblue pointed out the fact that nationality is very different to race

sorry, pernickety english/linguistics student over here! *waves and points at self*

Uh..also, I think Morri's thoughts were less about the fact that she was 'being picked on' and more about the fact that she felt less than proud of *some* (not all, not by a long shot) of the things that have been done in the name of the US as a superpower these days.

Also, I think she's been rethinking it since she realised that it would keep many doors open for her, holding a dual citizenship. I'd *kill* for dual citizenship...probably british/euro though, and I told her so...

    Just my two cents!

Aha, ok well I'm sure alot of Americans feel that way undestandably. Thanks for filling me in (-:

I have dual citerzenship, I should really make more use of it than I have, but oh well being a parent does limit you somewhat... I didn't think Americans could have dual citerzenship though?

^^ Depends on the country. Some countries won't let Americans have dual citizenship. AMERICA will... but some countries hate us and will force us to renounce if we want theirs.

^Yeah. The only reason why I have dual citizenship between Japan and America is b/c my mom is a permanent resident of the USA.

Actually, I don't think that is called racism, but nationalism. It doesn't sound like it matters whether the american is black, brown, white, yellow or red - being hassled for being an american is nationalism - not racism.
