i haven't tried loreal, but i have used clairol "jazzing," another semi-permanent dye. i've got light brown hair and i tried dying it black. the semi-permanent dye tinted the haira darker shade, but didn't actually dye it black. this is the way all semi-permanent dyes will work and the intensity of tint will depend of the lightness and absorbency of your hair.

a demi-permanent dye will dye a richer and deeper color, but they also last quite a bit longer. i dyed my hair black with a demi-permanent dye about 2 months ago and it is still slightly darker then normal now. still, the color fades as the hair grows and you don't have to worry about roots showing (unless you have very light hair and have chosen a very dark color).

i would reccomend testing the general color you want with a semi-perm. and then going with a demi-perm. if you like the effect.

if you want highlights or a lot of color variation you probably want to see a professional, as these things get complicated.

I bought Electric Black to use on top of my already black hair (I always colour it black nowadays, it's dramatic, but still goes well w/ my skintone) So anyways, I used it a long time ago, and really, I haven't noticed much a difference. Yes, it's a *tiny* bit darker, but even the red and brown pieces of my hair didn't get darker...the black looked the same, and the coloured pieces didn't even get coloured!

One of my friends bought a red shade (I don't know the exact name) and she didn't notice much of a difference either. It left a reddish sheen, especially in the sun, but nothing greatly noticeable.

The application wasn't difficult, it was a purple mousse that I rubbed into my hair. The scent was nice (smelled like grapes) and it didn't stain my skin or shower when I washed it out.

Personally I wouldn't use it again...it didn't do anything for my hair, but for someone who has light hair (blonde-light brown) I'd recommend it for you. I'd also recommend it to preteens and teens who are afraid of damaging their hair (since it's ammonia free). If you're looking for a slight change without committing, you should try this.

Bought it, tried it....nothing happened. I mean, absolutely nothing. Now it can not be because I have 'color resistant hair' as the lady on the complaint line said, because my hair is incredibly porous from all of the times I've dyed it. At the time I used the stuff, my hair was a faded dark brown color and it did nothing at all. I reccomend using that natural instincts semi-permanent stuff. It usually comes out in 15 or so washes (for me) and it's a good way to test out a new color.
