    DIY clip in extensions

Hi, a quick search didn't yield what I was looking for nor can I find what I want on google.

I bought some hair today along with toupee clips as I'd like to make my own set of clip in extensions. Does anybody have any tips or links that could help point me in the right direction? For example, should I have a 6" weft for the nape, maybe a 4" at the base of the crown? What about the sides and the top? How many clips should I sew on? Should I double the weft or use it singly?

I would really appreciate any help. tia.

I don't want to make any but I'd love to know where to buy and how to use some clip-in highlights.

Racquel Welch makes a set of clip ins. I've seen some on ebay as well. I believe folica sells them? I got all sorts of hits when I googled "clip in hair extensions" but nothing on how to make your own.

No LC, I've had the sew in kind before and they really bugged me. I don't want the committment of "permanent" extensions. I'd just rather clip them in for a slutty night on the town.

if you google it and check out the how to videos you can tell how long each piece needs to be along with where to place the clips.

Please post or PM me on your findings. I am a DIY girl at heart (esp. when it comes to beauty) and I would love to make my own instead of paying $220 for shipping online.

I make my own clip ins; I do 7" for the back, and then two 1.25" sections, one for each side. Double the weft, and sew a 1/4 in of netting on top (to attach the toupee clips to).

You might want more pieces...I just use them for fullness, not so much length.

I do my own clip ins too....I have three double wefts in. I start the lowest one at the bumps behind your ears and move about a 1/2 inch up for each one on top.

I don't think a set measurement works for everyone. Thats why it's better to make your own so you can customize them to the size of your head. I just measured the wefted hair to my head and then cut it. I then sewed two wefts together and attached the clips to each end of the weft. When I put the clips in, I tease the hair where the clip will go and hairspray it so the clips have something soild to hang on to. I can go out dancing and they won't even budge that way.

When I went in for my regular cut and color I clipped them in and had my stylist razor cut them for blending. You can attempt to cut them yourself..just make sure you point cut. Cutting straight across makes them look choppy.

I will try and take some pictures of my clips so you can see how they are made tonight.

I think some people on makeupalley.com have done this -- do a board search there and you should find some help. I've been wanting to try this too.

Try for clip on extensions - they have the best prices - better than the other wig sites.

I have some human hair left over from my old extensions. Can I make clip in extensions out of them or do I have to buy new hair?

TM, I think it depends on how much you have left and if you are trying to fill out your hair or lengthen it. Is it on a long track?

I always did my own, pretty much exactly like CaliforniaAllie. I think that's the best way to do it, I would also add a clip in the center back (middle). Teasing really is the best way to keep the tracks in!

I want to add length mostly. The track is about 16". Is there a step by step guide on how to attach the clip to the hair extensions?

BTW here is a site I found on how to attach the extension to your head: http://www.fashion-era.com/image_pla...cut_photos.htm

Hmmm... I don't know, I'm sure there is a step-by-step somewhere on the internet. It's really simple though!

These are pictures of my old tracks, when I had black hair. I wish it was blonde so you could see better, sorry. The clips I've used (there may be different kinds) always had holes on either side for sewing the hair to the clip.

I would measure for three rows, I wanted to lengthen and not fill out too much and when I put more than three rows in I looked like I had huge 70's hair. I would measure the top, middle and about the nape of the neck. I always doubled the tracks and sewed them together first and then I'd sew the clips in.

What a great site!!! ^^^^^^ THANKS!!

I've made my own clip ins. I made three pieces, one right at the bottom of my hair, one for between my ears, and one for around my temple. They look good. I simply sewed the clips to the hair and that was that. Now that my bangs have grown out I'm thinking about making two one inch wide pieces for the top of my head to hang down the sides. Not sure though as I'm still thinking about cutting the bangs again...
