Exclamation Vitamin deficiency caused by birth control pills

Lately I've been getting very strange and painful cuts and sores in my mouth. They're not canker sores, it's more like the skin on the inside of my mouth has suddenly become really weakened. A friend suggested to me that I may have a vitamin deficiency (especially lately since I've been working all of the time and eating crappy foods). I looked up 'mouth ulcers' and found out birth control pills reduce folic acid and b-vitamin levels. Both of which in low levels can cause mouth sores!! It also reduces vitamin c and selenium. It does have positive effects on calcium, copper, zinc, and iron. I just thought you ladies would like to know, it's probably best to pair birth control with vitamins AND a proper diet. While this info is probably in teeny-tiny print somewhere on my birth control pack, I really would've liked my doctor to alert me of this!

If anyone has any contrary thoughts on this (I know a lot of SWers are in the medical profession, or were) I'd love to hear them, as this is a relatively new realisation for me.

Maybe this is why my nails are so thin. I have several manicurists tell me they've never seen nails that thin, and they wont even buff them, because it'll make them thinner.
I take calcium and a multivitamine, maybe I need a more of those ones you mentioned. I've been on bcp's since I was 14.

Wow, I'm surprised your doctor didn't warn you two about these effects. >=T

I recently went on depo, and my doctor stressed the importance of me to take a multivitamin and at least 1200 mg of calcium per day, because the shot reduces your bone density over time.

No doctor has ever told anyone I've ever met in my entire life about taking a multi-vitamin while on birth control! I find it astonishing honestly that they failed to inform us of such a serious thing. Obviously most doctors know that not all people eat correctly and so therefore they should have taken it upon themselves to inform us that bc pills can lower levels of vitamins that our bodies need to function properly!
HMMMM....go figure...apparently the damn doctors don't know that much about what they are prescribing.
    Thanks for the info!

The whole thing sounds very plausible. B vits do definitely get screwed up... but please, if you never ever listen to a thing i say, listen to this: any supplement that contains calcium carbonate is not going to do ANYTHING for bone density, or bone loss. You NEED NEED NEED calcium citrate if you want anything to come from taking calcium, then you must take citrate. -- theres nothing wrong with a multivitamin, but mouth sores is also a sign of vitamin C deficiency. But more than 2 grams of vit C every day will give you diarrhea, so be careful.

*blinks* Wow... This explains a lot. I've been lacking in a lot of vitamins for a while now (vegetarian who eats crappy food), but I have been noticing some things like that lately, though more along with the whole brittle-thin nails than the mouth ulcers. Maybe that's why.

I've started on salt-water mouth rinses and daily vitamins. Hopefully that will improve my situation, these ulcers can be realy painful! I also suffer from the brittle nails thing...it's easy to forget about when they're under three layers of acrylic, but they're definitely not up to par.

Would you mind quoting a source about this? I should read up.
