    Default Birth Control Pills etc.

I've used condoms for the last 4 years. Now I am in a monogamous relationship with a man who came of age before HIV and cannot come wearing a condom.

I've been on Yasmin for two months. So far it's made me nauseous and depressed for the first week of each pack, has not improved my skin (but hasn't worsened it), has contributed to an overall loss of libido, but on the plus side, has made my periods light and pain free.

Years ago, I took Ortho Tri Cyclen, which made me barf in the morning, did not affect my mood, improved my skin greatly, didn't affect my libido, and made my periods slightly better but not as good as Yasmin.

Neither Ortho nor the Yasmin affected my weight.

    I want birth control that
    • Doesn't make me a psycho bitch
    • Doesn't make me break out (and possibly makes me break out less)
    • Doesn't make me a sexless eunuch
    • Doesn't make me puke
I can't use spermicidals and my mother after whom I take after in health matters had horrible experiences with IUDs.

Has anyone taken Seasonale or Seasonique? What about other hormonal birth control options? Depo?

I get sick on every one of the pills as well. My fav bc is by far the patch. However, since I'm dancing now, that's not an option. Now I use the nuva ring. Took some getting used to, but now it's great.

With the patch you put it on once a week, then take it off for your 4th week to have your period. The ring you put in, leave in for three weeks, then take out. Both have been much better for me than the pill.

Never tried depo...scared to. Good luck

do not, by any means, go on depo. anything you're experiancing from the pill will be nothing by comparison to depo. i had a horrible experiance with it, and anyone i've talked to thats been on had a similar experiance.

I was on Depo for 3 shots I think (about 9 months) and then I stopped getting the shots- I had horrible side effects. I gained tons of weight (don't remember exactly how much anymore, but I think it was about 15 lbs.). I broke out extremely bad, and no acne creams would help. I also started losing my hair really bad. It would fall out in clumps. When I would take a shower, I would have to clean the drain out 2-4 times throughout my shower because the drain kept getting clogged with hair. (My hair started growing back a couple months ago, so now I have a bunch of baby hairs everywhere... lol... my hair is still really thin, but I think after another year or so, it should start to get back it's thickness). I also bled constantly for the first 2 months, and had spotting the rest of the time I was on it, along with really heavy periods that would last about 2 weeks.

I've tried OrthoTriCyclin Lo and that didn't have enough hormones in it for my body, so for the whole 6 months I was on it, I had constant spotting. I didn't have any other side effects with that one, it just wasn't enough hormones.

Yasmin gave me yeast infections every month, about a week before my period. That's the only bad side effect I had with that one, from what I remember.

I'm on OrthoTriCyclin right now, and I haven't noticed any horrible side effects. I've been on it for about 5 months now and it has helped to clear up my skin, and I haven't gained much, if any, weight from it. I did feel really nausious the first couple months I was on it, but that went away and now it seems to be working fine.

As you can see from my experiences, it can take a while to find a birth control that works well with your body. Things that have worked for others haven't worked for me, and the other way around. Good luck!
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

Ditto. It worked for me by making me fat and friggid. However, after the 6 months of irregular spotting, it was kinda nice not having a period at all.

I'm using OrthoCyclene and I love it.

I'm on Marvelon for three years and I'm haven't had much problem. It only made me sick when I took two pills way too close together cuz I forgot one. And it made me go up two cup sizes, gain maybe three pounds from the hormones (but I have PCOS which mucks up my hormones anyway, so the high estrogen is needed). It didn't affect my skin either way, maybe makes me a little moody before my period, but before the pill, I was only getting my period three times a year, so I'm probably just not used to actual menstration. I don't think it's affected my libido.

Anyway, this is webpage with some helpful charts I looked at before. It doesn't mention Marvelon or all the pills, but it gives you an idea of what kind of estrogen, androgen, and progestin doses are 'right for you' as they say. I immediately become skeptical of any doctor who tells me 'they're all basically the same'.

I use the nuva ring and love it. I change mine every month just like your supose to except I don't leave it out for a week for my period, I do that every three months so I only get four periods a year. I do this because I suffer from migraines and would get terrible ones during my period every month. So now I've been able to cut back on the frequency of them.

My boyfriend and I use condoms, which work fine for us, but I'm considering oral contraceptives for the specific purpose of making by boobs bigger. I know that's kind of retarded, but I've been losing weight, and don't want to loose any boobage...they're small B-cups, and I'd hate to go back to the AA's I had in high school. Has anybody else tried this and did it work?

I was on Ortho-Tri for a few months when I was 18. I started to have a lot of vaginal pain and cramping during sex; I discontinued them and the pain went away a few months later. That's not a very direct correlation between the pills and the pain, but it's made me paranoid about getting on pills again.

I know individual response to hormones in the pills can vary a lot, but in general I'm assuming a higher dose of estrogen would result in increased breast size. Anbody know any more?

I've been doing a lot of research this morning (and thanks for that comparison chart very much molly) and the conclusion I'm getting closer and closer to is that I just can't be on hormonal birth control. I think it was fine in my early twenties but now that I'm closer to 30 my system can't handle all of the side effects.

I've heard of something not available in this country yet called Saheli/Centchroman. It's a nonhormonal birth control bill that works by prevent implantation in the uterine wall (hence why it's not marketed here in the good ole' USA). It might be worth looking into.

I have been using the NuvaRing for the past three years and am a big fan of it. Yes, it's hormonal, but since you only change it monthly there's less of a chance of forgetting if you're flaky like me.

They are suppose to help with acne in general. I was Loestrin which did not cause weight gain for me. I was Ortho and it made me majorally depressed and gain weight. I think the Loestrin did, however, make me lose my sex drive and suffer a slight bit more with depression though. I stopped the Loestrin a little over a month ago and I feel a little more bubbly and am definately more horny. I went a bought myself a new toy today even

I bleed once a year at the most for an hour on Depo. To each their own. And I have a VERY VERY high sex drive. Ask my boyfriend... oh wait.. he's passed out from exhaustion. XD

STAY AWAY FROM DEPO!!!!! It does internal damage! Havent any of you heard of the lawsuit involving the patch?

Thanks to depo, I am sterile. I have numerous cysts on my ovaries. Uterine scarring. Chemical and hormonal imbalances due to the chemical make up of Depo. Hair growing where it shouldnt. Hair not growning where it should. Cystic Acne, I have never really had acne until this.

Depo is supposed to be used for 2 years only, I was on and off it for 11 years. DONT DO IT!

    Hm..

I´m not on hormonal birth control, and I dont know if I ever will be.

Actually I´ve started to suspect the reason why so many women stay in abusive/weird relationships, and the reason why most of the relationships between men and women actually work these days, is the e-pill!

Okay, so the pill makes your body think you are already expecting, and your body starts to dfevenlope thouse pregnency hormones. Which is when you sub constantly start to look for the provider to take care of you and so on. Which might be the reason why so many women stick to their men no matter what, instead of nto having hormonal birth control on, but instead just a normal cycle, where you end up naturally after 3 weeks throwing the "non-capable" breeding partner out of the cave... Or at least make a good attempt of it..

I think I just read a study of monkeys that were tested on e-pills. The staring point was a flock of them, or a harem, should we say, with the alpha-male that had 2-3 favourite females. Usually the aplha-male only had sex with thouse 2-3. But as the researcheres started to inject birth control hormones (used on people, I think) the male instantly turned away from thouse 3 females and took new favourites. This went on untill the females were taken off the pill and became instant favourites as well.

I think this research was somehow linked to the fact why men cheated, too. But caused a huge hulabaloo, and I agree that it´s a bit, uh, to compare men to monkey, QUITE THAT DIRECTLY!

But I cant help but wonder howcome we dont get to see more research studies over how the hormones affect our relationships. I´m most certain the do take their toll on it. I´d strongly suspect a female not on e-pill is subconstantly much more attractive to a male that a one taking them.

I´d be curious to know if anyone has been getting know to this subject with more depth? AND sorry for the long posting.

Most of my friends have had horrid experiences on hormonal birth control, psycho-bitches, indeed!

    Ok..

No-one is probably interested in the subject I brought up, but here it goes, couple of the studies I was talkign about..

    from: http://66.249.93.104/search?q=cache:...i&ct=clnk&cd=3

    GENETIC BASED STUDIES

    A)

In 1995, Claus Wedekind did a study which was meant to test the mating preferences of women. It was a biological test which aimed to use products of the MHC (major histocompatibility complex). These products are instrumental in immune recognition because they bind onto foreign peptides and present them to T-lymphocytes. The MHC contains genetic material in its antigens, which can be characterized into HLA-A, -B, and -DR. The DR antigens were further broken down into subtypes. The forty nine females and forty four males being used for the experiment were genetically typed into a certain category.

The men in the study were told to wear a new tee-shirt for two days straight. They were not allowed to use perfumes or deodorants or eat spicy foods. The next day, the women were asked to rate the odors of six shirts. Three of the shirts they rated had been worn by men who had dissimilar MHC antigen type to them. The other three shirts had been worn by men who were of similar genetic make-up to them. Each woman had to rate the shirt for pleasantness and sexiness. All of the women rated the shirts the second week after menstruation in order to standardize the data. There were some women who were on the birth control pill and Wedekind decided to compare their results separately.

The results of the study were very interesting. Those women who did not take oral contraceptives perceived the odors of men with dissimilar MHC as more pleasant. However, women who were taking oral contraceptives perceived the odors of the men with similar MHC as more pleasant. In order to draw a firm conclusion, the study would have to be conducted again with a large sample, however, the results of this study suggest some notable hypotheses. The birth control pill seems to interfere with natural mate choice. This result could be explained because the body believes that it is pregnant. When a woman is pregnant, she does not search for a new mate. Instead, she looks for friendly help and a form of communal nesting. These results also suggest the causes of problems in some relationships. If two people are together, and the woman decides to start taking the pill, the relationship could sour. Likewise, if a woman stops taking the pill after she has a partner, the relationship could change for the worse. Cases like these have been found, but it is too early to draw a firm conclusion. Scientists are also currently investigating the effect of oral contraceptives on conception. It is much more difficult to conceive a child with someone who has similar genetics. There is a natural aversion to inbreeding. If a woman is attracted to a man with similar genetics, this could result in fertility problems. Experiments are still being done to try to determine to what degree these results can be verified.

    B)

Another interesting study was conducted in 1994 by Krug, Stamm, Pietrowsky, Fehm, and Born. It tested the effects of the menstrual cycle on creativity. Seventeen women, not taking oral contraceptives, were tested at three stages throughout their menstrual cycle. Another seventeen women, taking oral contraceptives, were also tested three times throughout their cycle. The women in the two groups were paired with similar characteristics, such as age. Creativity was measured by six tests which tested divergent thinking. The tests included such things as thinking up consequences to hypothetical situations, transforming familiar drawings into various objects, and free association tasks. The sample size used for this study was small, but a trend can be noted. Overall, creativity did not differ between women taking oral contraceptives and women not taking oral contraceptives. However, during the preovulatory phase, creativity was substantially increased in the women not taking oral contraceptives. The women taking oral contraceptives had an unchanging level of creativity throughout their cycle. These results are probably due to the increase in estrogen in a woman's body when taking the pill. Once again, further studies should be done to make any firm conclusions, but the evidence thus far seems promising.

    C)

Ronald D. Nadler performed many studies which investigated the effects of oral contraceptives on chimpanzees. In 1993, he did a study which tested copulation in chimpanzees taking oral contraceptives. The female chimp was in one cage and the male chimp was in an adjoining cage. Some of the chimps had free access and some had restricted access. The chimps that had restricted access allowed the female to press a lever to let the male in. The chimps were separated into four comparable groups. Accessibility and taking oral contraceptive were the two variables that were being tested. It was found that during the midcycle phase, chimps are more likely to copulate. Chimps or humans taking oral contraceptives do not experience different phases in their menstrual cycle. Their worlds are much more static. Therefore, chimps taking oral contraceptives would want to copulate less. The clearest reduction in sexual activity occurred with the free access chimps who were taking oral contraceptives. The experimenters had hypothesized that there would be a greater decrease in copulation in chimps on oral contraceptives with a restricted access. However, the restricted access chimps avoided copulation during the natural cycle so there was not a large decrease in the amount of copulation of the chimps on oral contraceptives. Nadler did warn not to take the results of the study too seriously because there are other factors that affect copulation. Chimps who had a good relationship copulated the same amount regardless of accessibility and oral contraceptive intake. Likewise, chimps in abusive relationships copulated the same amount because the female chimps felt threatened. The data from the chimps who had mediocre relationships supported the conclusion as well. Nadler speculates that since the physiology and behavior of chimps and humans are extremely similar, the results of a study done with humans would produce the same results. In upcoming years, similar studies might be conducted to see if the effects of oral contraceptives on sexual behavior is similar in humans.

I agree that was a very interesting post. It will be interesting for me to see how it affects me. I had been on the pill for four years until recently a couple of months ago coming off of it. The reason I started the pill was for treatment of endometriosis. My sex drive the last two weeks has been off the charts. I even bought a sex toy yesterday. I do notice that I am more laid back about getting dances but once I get a dance I am good at keeping him in the VIP room for several dances. I hope the endo doesn't come back strong, I have already had 7 operations for it since I was 17. If it does come back I might consider a hysterectomy.
