Hi, I'm pretty new to the whole dancing thing.
I keep hearing about a dance card. What is this, the purpose, how do I get one, and do I really actually need one?
Thanks in advance.

where are you from?
you think she means a sheriff's card, a business/parish license, or an actual old-fashioned dance card where guys sign up for dances???
I would think that it refers to a license or the registration you need to be able to dance. It is not needed for every club, but in many cities it is necessary. The club will be able to tell you whether or not you need it, and where you can get it from.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

Maybe a local slang term for a dancer's permit? Last I ever heard of a dance card, was when folks still held dances, and the ladies had a card to fill with gentlemen's names to dance with!

Hey - As was mentioned, a dance card is a special permit required by many cities/clubs if you want to work there. I had to get one this past summer to work in Detroit, and it cost about $280. The money goes towards various paperwork and a card photo. Basically it's just a brief background check, a lot of signatures, and you're done. The club i worked at had an agent take me downtown and walk me through the process. If you had a specific club in mind that requires a dance card, ask them if they have a similar process. There's really no point to it, but it gives the cities a chance to "tax" dancers (cause god knows we don't claim everything we make), and gives the city another opportunity to harass/fine the clubs. On the plus side, in case of emergency or anything, there is at least a record of your information. A pain in the ass, but it get's you working. Good luck, and hope this helps!
