Default HELP! Any hair stylists out there?

I used loreal's feria shimmering highlights. i mixed it up and applied it. I forgot to put in the aromatic stuff but figured it was no big deal. That stuff just makes it smell better, right?

after five minutes my hair sarted to turn bight orange. I rinsed and now my hair is the dreaded orange. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHGGGGG!

Can I dye over this? should I see a proffessional? what do I do?

    Any help is appreciated.

Home highlighting kits rely mostly on what pros use, bleach. Depending on your natural hair color, hair goes through stages of decolorization. Brown to red, red to orange, orange to yellow, and the holy grail of yellow to light yellow. Basically, the longer you leave the stuff on the more likely you'll reach your desired result. The catch is, the longer you leave it on, especially if you're an ametuer, the more likely you are to cause serious damage to the hair. That's why most colorists suggest that brunettes who wanna go blonde do it gradually with heavy highlights over time.

Your natural darkness, or level, of your hair color (or any other contributing pigment from artificial color), quality of lightener, and developer are all factors in determining the final result. In other words, go to a pro! He or she will most likely try to fix it by highlighting until desired result is reached, or neutalizing the orange with a blue based demi-permanent color. The latter you could probaly attempt yourself, but the problem is most OTC color kits don't let you know what thier color base is, so you could make things worse...

Thanks for your help. I was actually just trying to go from brown to brown with red highlights so I thought it wouldn't be a big deal. When I saw it turning such a hideous color I washed it out; I had it on for about five minutes.

Usually I have my friend (graduated from Aveda) do my hair but she was unavailable. I had an audition and thought that maybe I could do it myself. Clearly, I should have just left it alone. Sigh.

Time to go to a proffessional...

You know, the same thing happened to me a few years ago. I grabbed one of those horrible L'Oreal all over color with highlights...I had dark blonde hair, and it was a dark brown dye with subtle red highlights. MY HAIR TURNED BRIGHT ORANGE! I was so angry. My advice to you is call the L'Oreal company and complain. I did, and they paid to get my hair fixed. A brown hair dye should not turn your hair orange.

Sorry, ladies! I'm gonna post another long one! Hair and beauty is my passion!

Again, this is why box color can be tricky! I'm all for DIY if you're looking for an all over, subtle change (1-2 levels lighter or darker in your natural tonality). However, I strongly believe that dramatic changes and any form of decolorization should be done in a salon.

Another factor in haircoloring is the color wheel:
    Blonde(yellow)+Red(undertones, hi-lites, whatever)=ORANGE

This is why knowing the base color of tint is SO important! Yes, a brown haircolor should'nt turn hair orange, but it can if the person applying it has no knowlege of base colors, contributing pigments, tonality, the level system and remaining color.

Most home coloring kits don't give you unwanted results because they're crap, it happens because the person applying it dosen't have all the info or proper education of color theory. WHen you go to a salon, your paying a colorist for his or hers knowledge and expertise, not "better" pigments.

The money you try to save DIY can cost hundreds of dollars more in professional color correction. Save yourself time and $$$ by having dramatic changes and highlighting done by a liscenced, recommended pro!

I just wanted to add one thing to Mias great explination.

When you buy the box of Clairol at the drugstore and the gal has this gorgeous chestnut brown color and you look at the box and say hey! I want THAT color so you buy the color...

You have to remember - that girl did NOT have YOUR hair color before it was colored therefor you will NOT have HER color when you throw the box color on your head.

YOUR current color + the color in the BOX = FINAL OUTCOME

Again, like Mia said - it all comes down to having knowledge of pigments, color, the color wheel, etc, etc...
