Default NJ Moves to Ban Exotic Dancing

There's a bill making the rounds in the state Assembly to force clubs to relocate at least 2,500 feet away from bus stops, hospitals, playgrounds etc. Girls we are a menace to people just tryin' to catch a bus home! They also think clubs should close at 11pm because all those late night hours cause rampant crime and plummeting property values. No more bikini, baby--unless you're on the beach!

Check out what club owners have to say http://www.xtrememagazine.com/Events/events.html

Eek! Hopefully the bill will be pared down some before it gets to a vote...club owners do have money, and therefore a little bit of influence. But no legislator wants to be seen as being on the side of strip clubs and stripping.

Six feet away...hope they'll give custies a pair of binoculars so they can enjoy their dances. On the other hand, closing by 11pm would be great!! I hate late hours!

My Atlantic City club closes at 6am! How can you serve those night owl gamblers if you close at 11pm.

We have actual problems here like DYFS and our shitty city school systems, chronic high numbers of uninsured, deeply entrenched corruption....
We have an insanely unpopular tax bill making the rounds and I think this is a way to deflect from that fallout.

We wear BIKINIs for God's sake! We couldn't be more low key. I can't speak for VIP rooms in general but where I've worked I've never seen anything beyond heavy groping.

I know, I know. Guys will just have to switch their schedules around so they come into the club in the daytime and go to work at night.

I don't know the specifics of the statutes there, but in a lot of places the operators of a bikini club may have nothing to worry about. Since you're no more naked than anyone at the beach would be, a bikini establishment by legal definition is technically not an adult business, even if it functionally works the very same way as a strip club with nudity does.

The Philly clubs already got a boost from the Jersey smoking ban. And this could really send us running across the Delaware.

It will be great for Pennsylvania to have some of us classy Jersey guys spending time across the border...

Well, I work in a nude club in Jersey, and I hadn't heard of the proposed bill until this post. There is NO WAY this bill will work. The club has actually been shut down in the past before because of "zoning", and this would most likely force closing. I'll have to to talk to the manager and owner about this and see what they know, I know the owner is very involved in keeping adult entertainment legal in this state. Thanks for the post!!!!!

You're verrrry welcome. I posted it precisely because I hadn't seen anything in the general press about it. My guess is they expect to sneak this through without ANY club owners, dancers, or customers having prior notice. They're not doing this to satisfy public outcry. It's just so they can pretend to be doing something....other than raising taxes.

Same old b.s. theories of the perceived harmful "secondary effects" that no court should uphold. Amazes me attorneys such as Scott Bergthold aka Community Defense Counsel that get rich bilking taxpayers cities/states out of $$$ under the false guise that they have pertinent "secondary effects" studies that will show increses in crime, decreases in property values etc. as a direct result of having stripclubs. What they have is often outdated studies not even done in cities/states relevant to the case at hand. Freakin FASCISTS. The conservatives are flexing their muscle again. They've got to be stopped from pressuring politicians and done away with.

There is no love in BUSH. Ha Seriously though, I would hope 'cum' next election time all of the religious fanactics are voted out of office. We can debate till were blue in the face as to which major party is GENERALLY more adult-oriented friendly-I would have to say Democrats, but that is the lesser of two evils on this particular subject...

Strategically placed campaign contributions generally do the trick, like they did in Missouri in 2005.

No lapdancing in NJ? Say it ain't so. Besides I thought the state house, the majority of the congressmen and both senators are all democrats. Didn't think there was a Republican majority anywhere in this state.

This is just yet another infuriating example of the backwards direction this country is moving in all phases of life. Coming from the Conservative heatland of the USA, I find the simple-mindedness and utter idiocy of the masses simply absurd.

I am slowly growing more and more nervous about the future of our culture. It seems like people just want to be comforted against everything the fear or do not understand. That's not a way to live.

A club I worked at a few years ago is still stuck in the 'bikini bar' mode.

Only the bikinis are legally proscribed as being 50's style--no lie! The statutes being enforced dictate that no part of the ass cheek is to be exposed!!

Now, from what I've heard, they still occasionally send cops in to ensure proper enforcement--even when the neighboring city of Daytona has been forced (miraculously, after a heated, expensive, and protracted legal battle--and much to their dismay!) to allow nudity...

A very nice club about 20 minutes drive from here was shut down cold, less than six months after opening, due to Bible-Beater organized protests, including signs claiming their children were being threatened! And I've said it before, but I'll say it again--my first club was shut down by a church in the same shopping center. Their 'Prayers 'R Us' approach was being interfered with, apparently.

It is high time we who care stop listening to the rhetoric dispensed by people who support conservative politicians in allegiance with 'Family Values' morality police. There are politicians from both parties who kowtow to this trend, but it's pretty damned obvious to me who does it more often.

"Oh, it won't affect you at all. Take off the tinfoil hat." is not something I can tolerate hearing, when I've personally seen friends get ticketed and threatened with arrest for showing a glimpse of ass cheek, and had to worry about getting arrested myself by cops 3-4 times a night...

It's an attempt to enforce archaic Judeo-Christian morality, plain and simple. And in many places, it's working.

Vote the swine behind this out of office, whatever party they are affiliated with!

The start of this whole thing was a successful local club owner wanted to expand into Ocean County. He complied with the zoning rules but came up against a local official who didn't want 'that kind of thing in HIS town.' It's not even a groundswell of opposition--it's this one guy buzzing in the ears of local legislators.

The legislators want to make a name for themselves so instead of changing local zoning for that town or county--they go for changing the entire state and the whole industry!!

Not to contradict you--and you know how highly I esteem your opinion--but without an ever-present 'groundswell of opposition', just waiting to be tapped, all over this 'Land of the Free', this sort of attempt would be doomed to failure.

There's plenty of guys with lots of money who can afford to go to stripclubs whenever they want to--and if atavistic legislation has made the local venues stilted by comparison, they can afford to fly off to some other area and spend lots of money on more accomodating entertainment.

I have two close friends who fit the bill precisely on this point.

One of them is a die-hard consevative who listens to these AM talk shows that are so popular all the time--you know, the kind of shows that would gleefully roast him over a slow fire for his biannual trips to 'Bangcock' to fuck cheap prostitutes...

One day I was riding around with him during a visit, and could no longer contain my disgust when one of the most famous talk show hosts, some vapid bitch whose mind was clearly addled by religon, seriously offered this solution to a mother concerned by her teenaged daughter's aversion to sexual abstinence: "What about prayer?"

Right, that's really going to work...

The problem is, so many people don't want their own personal liberties interfered with, yet consistently vote for and support conservative candidates who are trying to do exactly that, knowing that they have the option of getting what they want elsewhere, if necessary.

I asked my friend if he wasn't concerned by the very close alliance between conservative politicians and religious activists interfering with civil liberties. "Oh, that's nothing to worry about, they can't really hurt us". Sure, so long as those Bangkok whores are waiting...

Anytime any politician, almost anywhere in this entire country, seeks to make a move like this swine in NJ, you can count on a huge percentage of the population--who seriously believe stripclubs are going to threaten their children--are going to be ecstatic, and continue to vote for him.

Oh, I agree and Mr. Levy said as much! It could be a lost cause. People fight lost causes every day. This whole thing has mushroomed quite improbably to become a threat to businesses throughout the entire state. That has to be taken seriously.

All I posted was how the whole thing started.

You know better than to think I was taking issue--I'm glad you posted about it, too...

We need to be aware of these threats, so when people tell us not to worry, we can reply that it's quite easy for them to tell us that--they aren't the ones whose livelihood is being threatened.
