Sad The Pain When Starting Out

Sorry ladies, I searched and couldn't find anything similar on here.
So I finally started Saturday, I worked the 2-10:30. I felt like I really accomplished something that day. I learned alot, overcame some fears, and made $250 without doing hardly any lapdances. I did fall on stage once, but I wasn't even that embarassed. I kept telling people it was my first day (as if they couldn't tell) and I think it actually helped my tips. Then on Sunday, which was both Mother's Day and my 21st birthday, I worked from 4 until 1:30am.
That Saturday, I didn't think I would make it through the whole shift. The shoes were totally kicking my butt. Early in the day when there are fewer girls working we do 15 min sets, and then later we do 10 min sets. By the time I left that night I was having trouble pushing in the clutch in my car. I expected to be sore but this was terrible. Sunday I took advantage of the fact that I was able to drink so I could relax a bit. I didn't get trashed or anything, but when I asked for constructive critism on Saturday i kept hearing "Relax, don't look so nervous" and I really wasn't that nervous, just tired.
Anyway so my second day was easier, physically, but when I woke up this morning I couldn't move. I had to get a babysitter because I literally couldn't get off the couch. I did a little on the pole, practicing since I have no idea what I was doing, but I ended up on the floor quite a bit, I could be sexy without worrying that my legs would give in on me at any given moment, my knees are sore, but my ankles are swollen and my upper thighs won't even let my legs bend the way they should. Is it normal to be THIS sore or am I doing something wrong? I guess I'm just looking for reassurance because I had alot of fun and I really want this to work, but I even rescheduled important appointments today because I was so sore I needed help walking to the bathroom!!
I'm really sorry this is so long!!

    Thanks!!

Yes this is normal! You used some muscles that you never knew existed before! After a week or two your body will start getting used to it and then it'll be fine. I danced for a couple hours at a club and left and couldn't even move the next day and I only did a couple dances. So what I did after the soreness went away a couple days later, I got my butt in the gym and worked out hard and got my muscles in better shape and got them prepared for my first realy dancing. It did help but I still am getting sore but I just started last week. I have noticed that each night seems to get better. I think also you may have overdone it by working that much on your first day. Just take some hot baths, take advil, and maybe have your honey or someone give you a good massage to work those muscles out. I'd also recommend stretching really good before dancing, pacing yourself, avoiding alcohol and drinking plenty of water. Good luck and enjoy your new career as a dancer making lots of $$$$$!!!

i know that with any other exercise they suggest working out one day and then taking a day off to rest and then going again the next day and taking another day off, i dont know if this will work with your schedule, but at least your bod will feel a little better

My birthday was on Mother's day too! You will definitely get used to the soreness, but it takes a while to go away completely. I've been dancing full time for 3 months, and I still come home with very sore knees and calves. Try to stretch as much as you can, and get some Arnica cream and massage it into your sore joints after work; it feels fabulous. Good luck!!!

OMG I sympathize! I was so sore I couldn't move at ALL. People asked me if my husband was beating me because of all the bruises! Arnica was my lifesaver.

i started dancing about 2 months ago. don't worry, the soreness does get better and the shoes will too once you get used to them and break them in a bit.

starting to learn pole work is what really kicked my ass. i'm a tough girl, but the first few days after practicing on the pole were bad for me. hot baths with epsom salts help a lot to relieve muscle soreness. that and advil. if you take some sort of anti-inflammatory before you go to bed it helps a lot to prevent the soreness from developing.

also, yoga or pilates will help to keep your muscles loose and strong.

    good luck!!

I was pretty sore myself at first but not so sore as to quit functioning. It will help you believe it or not if you exercise. That way you are using muscles that are use to being used. Pilates is great for sore muscles.

How to help with sore newbie muscles:

    1) Stretch when you get home
    2) Hot bath with Epsom salts (available in the first aid section at the grocery/drug store)
    3) Homeopathic Arnica pills (available at the health food store)
    4) Tiger Balm or BenGay
    5) OTC pain reliever of your choice
    6) Exercise to build up stamina

And of course, keep working. You'll feel better soon!

It's completely normal to be very sore when you 1st dance....I remember being in your shoes back in the day. My body would ache so horribly.

Don't worry,it is normal.Just give it some time, and your body will get used to it.If you can, join a gym and do stretching and lots of cardio, then sit in the steam room and the whirlpool,it's great for the muscles.

I would say that some pain is normal, but not all. As a classical dancer, I have learned what pain is to be expected and what pain is bad. The worst thing you can do is have joint pain. Be sure that you aren't working your ankles or knees in a bad way. Sore muscles and feet and maybe a decent set of bruises are normal, but anything beyond that......try to fix it. My dance teacher had to have knee surgery many times because she didn't have the propper turn out during her time on pointe. The same principles exist in any type of dance or sport. Good luck and be careful!

i went in yesterday and danced one stage set (10 minutes) and i didnt have to give any dances. my legs hurt a little, but i just used muscles im not used to using. but now i know what other things to work out cause only my legs hurt, and not my arms or abs or anything. so know i know that dancing wont really work my arms and abs like i thought. so i went out and bought some weights and exercise videos. im trying to learn through my little bit of pain. the pain lets you know the exercise is working!

Oh my, I can SO relate to you right now! LOL I quit dancing in February, and just this Friday started back up again at another club. I worked for about 5-6 hours that night, was feeling the pain then, but REALLY feeling it the next day! LOL I had forgotten about it feeling like this from the lack of using certain muscles. For those people that say dancing is easy, I think they would think otherwise if they were in our jacked up heels for even 2 hours!

I think I'm having the bad pain. I don't have any muscle pain. I think that had a lot to do with weight training before dancing. I've been dancing for about a 1.5 months. For the past 2-3 weeks, I've had REALLY bad knee pain. I thought it was my shoes, so I got some different ones. Tomorrow, I'm going to get some new running shoes and see if that will help. I didn't have the knee pain until 2 weeks after dancing, but my job before this was very sedentary (medical transcription, so I sat most of the day). When I first started cardio training, I had a similar problem in my left knee, had x-rays, showed nothing, and my doctor said it was because my body wasn't used to the new activity. It's been 2 weeks, not getting any better, and now, it's worrying me. I was wondering if you could post more info about the knee pain issue. Thanks.

Yes, this is normal. You're body just has to get used to it. Consider getting shoe pads for your heels from the drugstore. Take a bath, take some advil, and relax.

I was more sore and tired than i'd ever been in my life after my first night. And according to my boyfriend, I, who always thrash around in bed when i sleep, slept like a zombie and did not move ONCE in the night when i came home. Unbelievably tired and sore at first is normal.

I dont know how they handle scheduling your shifts at your club, but I'd try to avoid working two nights in a row if you can for your first month. It'll help you heal better in between shifts while you're gaining the muscle and flexibility you need. Then maybe try two nights in a row and see how your body and your feet feel. You'll adapt.

Then I must be totally crazy, I've been dancing for a month and my 2nd & 3rd week I danced T, W & Th all in a row, 2 weeks in a row! I've also been dancing Fri and Sat nights in a row too. Maybe that's why I'm so sore when I get home. Oh well, I need the money really bad and I figure, I'll get used to it. But I won't do the 3 nights in a row thing again, maybe ever again!

I am new. Ive always been curious and i kind of pushed myself into dancing....im short my rent money....and i wasnt sure how long it takes to start making money. Is it possible to walk out of my audition dance with only 15 dollars? thats my fear. that and the fact that i will spend the remainder of my rent money on clothes and shoes for dancing and end up having to borrow from my family.

I have learned that taking Flex-a-min super glucosamine helps my knee out a whole bunch. But it does take a while to work. Hope all works out for you.

I feel so bad for you! And anyone just started dancing because there is no pain like it IMO!! I remember I lived in a townhouse when I first started and I would just crawl up my stairs those first couple days...One thing I love is Therma Care . The heat helps kill a lot of muscle pain for me. Also magnesium supplements help your muscles and nerves function better and will help them (and you) relax a little. And staying hydrated is important too because some people don't realize how dehydrated they can get with all that activity and drinking more caffiene or alcohol than usual.

My first pole dancing lesson resulted in me basically crawling around my house for the next two days. I know that doing a one hour lesson is a bit different to an x hour shift, but when i come home I always make sure to give myself a really big stretch, sometimes even a 20 minute pilates session. it's really helped! plus i stretch more before now.
