    Default Stripper Bohemians

I'm a bohemian. It's taken me a while to figure that out, I guess--after trying to do the whole "go to college, get a good job, prove yourself, climb, climb, climb" thing...I just can't do it. It isn't me.

Stripping is what allows me to live a life that upholds what is important to me--my freedom, my intellectual pursuits, my art, my family, my friendships--over all else. I support my husband, who is a full-time musician. We have two artist friends who live with us in exchange for whatever they are able to offer, which usually isn't money. I have a whole little artist commune developing here, all funded by stripping! We live frugally, shop second-hand by choice, etc., but I can still afford to buy what few luxuries we do want.

I like my job well enough, but more than that I see it as this amazing opportunity to live a life a unique, rare kind of life.

I know there have to be others here who are coming from a similar place...Share!!

    Yeah! You go, girl!

I dance because it lets me work on my own time and only a few days a week, leaving me the rest of the time to work on my writing and my relationships -- I am in a triad marriage that keeps me VERY busy.

Not so much yet, but my goal is to build a retreat/commune someday soon.

I think that's a pretty damn common thing; not only does stripping allow a lot of freedom with your personal time, but its somewhat rebellious nature appeals to boho chicks.

Of course, I can think of a lot of other terms besides "bohemain" to describe a dancer who supports a musician

I agree with you completely; I have had an Associate's for years and am almost finished with my Bachelor's, but the 9 to 5 world is just completely the opposite of the life I am looking for right now. For me, stripping is the perfect job (and dare I say career?) at this moment in time; the money is phenomenal, and I only have to work 3 days a week (albeit long shifts); the rest of the time I can devote to my own personal pursuits, including music (my dream). And since I live below my means, that means hopefully I'll have my own house in a few years, some good investments, and the ability to travel wherever the road takes me. It's not the best decision for everyone, but if you can do it, all the better

I agree with Dasha. Save as much money as you can now, so that you can support your lifestyle in the future as well. I, too, enjoy the freedom allowed by stripping. But I fear the day when I can no longer do this job. Even if I can manage dancing into my 40s, that is still a time when most people are hitting their prime careerwise. Plan for this.

Thank you for the advice, but I own my home, have an old 401K from my corporate days and a nice bank account and investment portfolio. I was hoping just to talk to other gals like myself. Any others out there?

I just strip because I enjoy dancing, and I enjoy male attention in that light. Both of my brothers have awesome careers (niether in 'real jobs' either) and pretty much support me, so Im just saving like no other while I can still bank. But yeah, I enjoy the lifestlye it provides. I dont feel like working one friday because I want to party, then I party. All the musicians I know bascially suppourt me tho, not the other way around so i have nothing to say there haha

I guess I just don't see dancing as the only way to have that kind of life; if you're willing to make the sacrifices, living communally and being artistic can be achieved in many ways. Dancing just happens to be a much more convenient and lucrative way to do so.

yes. at one point i was captaining a pirate farm in upstate new york which was lovingly called the Manarchist Home for Boys. some of us were in school some of us weren't. some of us made art all of us lived experiments. huge garden, orchard, chickens, fireplaces. the house was owned by a kid who received a lot of money due to an accident so there was no rent but lots of beds.

and next year i'll be living in a two room log cabin on the hudson river with a mountain man who plays the banjo. the difference between where i work (Rockland County, NY) and where i live is amazing. i go from tanglossedpainted fembot in the city back up to a rustic Thoreau monk existence in the woods where my driveway can be washed out by a particularly heavy rain.

    viva la boheme!

It's that kind of bohemian lifestyle that draws me to the idea of stripping. Flexible hours, decent pay, freedom, and time off to work on my art and my sewing. I don't think I could ever see myself in a stereotypical, stable career.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Oh Dottie, I want your life!

I am currently overqualified and ambivalent. I want to live a life that is satisfying...and yet here I am in a soul crushing job that affords me none of what I want. Congrats on living the way that makes you happy. It takes courage.

I'm with lalitha - overqualified and ambivalent - okay, not ambivalent - pretty bitter and pissed off about following the "correct, responsible" path - college, more college, and a job that doesn't even pay the student loans - I can't wait to be a dancer - just 2 more months or 20 more lbs then I get to be a bohemian...sort of.

I WISH I could be a stripper bohemian... But I need to have a career... Ima be old and wrinkly some day. But, while I'm going through college, I love my life style. It makes me feel unique and self-reliant.

Am i a bohemian? I think so. I make great money dancing a couple nights a week and I don't spend it on frivolous shit. I spend it on art supplies, tattoo equiptment and food. I shop at salvation armies and sex shops! I love my job, and that's all it is, a job. A creative, expressive job.
I'm a painter and tattoo artist, even though I make some money making art, It's not enough to keep making art. Because of the financial stability and freedom i have gained from dancing, I am capable of living out my life as a "starving artist" that never acctually goes hungry!
On top of it, since I live below my means, I can save for the future. I have all of this and never have to wait tables or work in an office like i did for years again.
I think what you are doing, building relationships with other artist and helping those who deserve help, is so beautiful!
Congrats for living such a meaningful and creative life!!!!!

Thanks for all the positive replies! A lot of people are threatened by the way we live our lives, but, se la vie, I suppose!

Oh, and ChaosFairy==I predicted you would respond to this post I am in an open marriage--not a poly one (yet), but an open one. One that recognizes that life is much longer and richer and more complicated than a lot of folks allow for

    wow, great replies!

u know, ive always been into personal freedom, living out side the box. i dont want a career that anyone can do...i mean, i want to become a writer, that is my passion. however, as everyone knows, working minium wage aint gonna cut it. and me, i only like working 2-3 days a week, so my paychecks are barely enough. i hate working with over-perfitonist bosses breathing over my shoulder, telling me everything i'm doing is wrong. having to wear dorky work uniforms, (that hardly make u feel sexy at all..) no jewerly, hair tied back, no tatoos...(WHAT THE HELL?!). i feel like a conformist.

exotic dancing does sound very alluring to me. im very curious about it. when i do start dancing, i also want to go to college so i can become a writer. travel the world!

So I was just curious as to how "bohemian" in its current sense was defined, and over at dictionary.com it's A person with artistic or literary interests who disregards conventional standards of behavior. I think by those rather loose standards, an enormous percentage of us qualify. I mean, hell, by the simple fact of our job we're disregarding conventional standards of behavior . . .
