Has anyone followed this diet? I've never been on a diet before but just recently started reading up on SBD and the Zone. Any recommendations?

My husband tried SBD a few years ago and liked it. He lost about 15 pounds (all he wanted to lose).
I've had really good luck just eliminating "bad" carbs and processed foods from my diet. I eat mostly lean protein (chicken/fish) and salads. I've lost 12 pounds without really trying (I'm 5'4" and now weigh 110). I still drink diet coke and have a glass of red wine at night. You may want to give it a shot if you don't want to follow a fixed diet plan. I don't get bloated and also don't get cravings...I have to remind myself to eat!
Good luck!
I agree with kittykat1971. Cutting back on carbs makes sense to me, but the Atkins version (though a good kickstart) was WAY too extreme for me, and I personally don't think it's healthy in the long run (limiting raw, nonstarchy vegetables? HUH?). South Beach is much more effective, healthy and realistic.
I've found that my weight is finally under control after years and years of struggle, give or take some holiday/winter fluctuation, and South Beach's approach is definitely one of the tools. Personally, I do have to keep an eye on calories, too, but I don't have to drive myself insane over them anymore.

It is basically a very common-sense diet (don't eat a lot of saturated fat or refined, processed foods) but the great part is that the very strict first two weeks (vegetables and lean protein only) make the weight come off so quickly that you're motivated to stick with it. Both my husband and I think it's great. Again, after the first two phases, it's really just common sense. And easily adaptable for vegans/vegetarians.
Limiting raw, nonstarchy vegetables? How so?Originally Posted by RoseWhite
During Induction which lasts for two weeks... yes but not during Phases 2, 3, and even Phase 4.
Atkins is so much more realistic. That is IF you have read the book.
SouthBeach is good though don't get me wrong because it does work and has worked for many many people... but for something that has worked for about 40 years... Atkins is the way to go. I swear by it and it's the only thing that has worked for me.
Lost 13 pounds in three months and have kept it off due to Atkins so I would definitely suggest Atkins. I don't count calories. I don't even count carb grams though it is suggested. I don't since I workout at least four days per week. First read the book though....but SouthBeach is okay. I would try Atkins first though because it has stood the test of time of about 40 years

So have you used SBD or no? I've always read the Atkins clogs arteries etc because of all the fatty meats/bacon you eat.Originally Posted by NaughtyAngel

atkins is awful for your body...not just because of the fat that you eat....you are starving your body of nutrients that you need, and you can look for some info on the web to describe the negative effects it has on your body.
The Induction phase is mainly what I'm referring to, yes. And of course I read the book, heh. I'm glad it worked out for you. It initially worked for me, too, but found that for the long haul I just got tired of the constant halitosis and constipation and general feeling that I was missing out on my favorite foods (I'm not a huge carnivore - I'm basically a pescetarian who occasionally eats poultry as well). Also didn't enjoy the feeling of being in ketosis, and my own *personal* feeling was that it ultimately wasn't good for my own particular body.Originally Posted by NaughtyAngel
I like South Beach's emphasis on lean protein, vegetables, and other fibrous foods. To me - being 'able' to eat pork rinds but not carrots . . . well, it just doesn't suit me. But again, I do know it suits others and I'm glad it suits you! As with all such matters, YMMV.

It's funny when I read these responses about Atkins because I used to be anti-Atkins haha UNTIL I read the book.Originally Posted by cinammonkisses

This is after I tried South Beach which I followed then quickly put on the weight that I lost. That is when I read about Atkins and educated myself about the plan.
Does it clog my arteries? NO. I eat salads, drink water, and exercise. How can that clog my arteries???
As for bacon... on Atkins I have NEVER had any bacon... though in his book he states that one can have nitrite-free bacon. I have never ever had bacon since I started Atkins.
As for meats... at MOST I eat meat once per day. Maximum. Usually it's fresh salads, broccoli which has lots of calcium, butter, eggs, more veggies LOL, etc. It's also key to understand that fat in food is a fuel that burns fat in your body. Unfortunately fat-free items in stores are laden with sugar which is why so many people are fat.
When on Atkins, you miss out on important nutrients.
Carbohydrates are the basis of grains, fruits and vegetables, and milk also has a significant amount in the form of lactose. When you eliminate or severely limit these foods, you are likely to have a grossly inadequate intake of many essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber and water that carbohydrates provide. You're also limiting the variety of foods that make eating more enjoyable.
Also remember that nutritional supplements can never replace the hundreds of plant phytochemicals (which include anti-cancer agents) in naturally-occurring carbohydrate-based foods.

This forum keeps eating my responses... but cinnamon sweetie... I wasn't referring to your response. It's the other responses stating how damaging it is.
Well before I didn't understand why so many people were anti-Atkins... so I bought the book and read it myself. That is why I suggest other people read the book first. In it he advocates eating less sugar and less refined foods, eat more salads, drink water, and exercise. That is one of best formulas out there.
As far as the book... it's only 75 cents plus shipping and handling here:
http://product.half.ebay.com/Dr-Atkins-New-Diet-Revolution-Updated_W0QQtgZinfoQQprZ2184253
That is why I suggest that other dancers read it. I don't know why they criticize it but I know that some dancers do not want other dancers to have an edge over them... for whatever reason. Well I like to see other dancers excel. I'm just that way I guess... so I highly suggest this to other dancers who wanna look their best.
I don't know about other dancers too but nothing else has worked for me... except Atkins. 13 pounds and I have kept it off. Wish I could post before and after pics but I highly highly suggest Atkins. If anything... I suggest that other dancers read the book for themselves instead of reading what is posted online and/or in the media. I wasted a year doing that. Looking back... I should have read the book so if other dancers wanna get in better shape... I suggest Atkins. It's very easy to follow plus exercise is advocated.
My meals look something like this:
Breakfast:
Omelette with asparagus
Snack:
Apple
Lunch:
Chicken with green salad
Snack:
Berries
Low-carb yogurt with Splenda not with aspartame/Nutrasweet (which is a no-no for the body)
Dinner:
Garden Salad from Boston Market
Etc
See the fruits and veggies? Notice there is NO bacon and NO pork rinds though if you want to eat them that is your choice.
Sometimes I eat oatmeal or pancakes (that do not have corn syrup, sugars, etc.)
On weekends I have low-carb desserts that I bake myself.
Also since I workout four or five times a week my CCL is 45 to 100 grams of carbs per day... but I don't even write down the amount of carbs. By the way with Atkins there is no calorie counting. (In fact I have eaten more calories than when I was dieting before LOL I checked just to see but calorie counting is not a part of Atkins.) But despite the misinformation... one can eat oatmeal. I do sometimes but fiber is not only in cereals. It can also be found in veggies and in fruits like the apples and berries that I eat. Apples and berries have a low glycemix index which affects your blood sugar level. Again... Atkins is the ONLY thing that has worked for me.
Also... I have NEVER had any of the "nutritional supplements" being sold by Atkins Nutritionals. Note the sample of my meals above. No nutritional supplements whatsoever. Instead it's real food that I eat. Salads especially broccoli which is rich in calcium, asparagus, cauliflower, zucchini, tomatoes, and lettuce are my faves which I eat regularly.
Hope this helps other dancers and again... I highly suggest that other dancers read the book. It's the only thing that has helped me and despite the criticism... it does work for many many people.
South Beach did not work for me. I put the weight back on in a month but thats not to say that it doesn't work because it does for many people and South Beach does help people. That is the main thing. Same with Atkins.
Either way... both are good but I suggest Atkins because it kinda forces you to be more disciplined... which I like and it advocates eating salads, drinking water, eating less refined sugars, and advocates exercise. It is the only thing that has worked for me. No calorie counting either. I can still have desserts too and I bake some low-carb desserts with low sugar on the weekends. I am very pleased with it.
Anyway good luck to all whether you choose South Beach or Atkins![]()

Honestly I get really frustrated with these types of diets because they are very hard to follow giving the types of food/ingredients, and that they want you to 'prepare' every meal. Sorry, but I don't have the time or patience for that. I stick to a bodybuilders diet which may be boring... but NO HASSLE! Also, I find diets like South Beach, etc. tend to be expensive because they require some ingredients that are not easy to find and therefore expensive. Just my opinion.
That is a good point but this has helped me, a Double Burner Reversible Nonstick Griddle:
One can be bought here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=284507
but even then that picture is deceiving because I rarely if ever eat red meat. I eat tofu, chicken, eggs, fish, etc. plus salads regularly but not red meat. I just don't like red meat too much so I usually have it about once or twice per month at most.
But I bought mine from WalMart for about $25. It's been a lifesaver.
I cook my asparagus, squash, chicken, etc then I freeze it, pop it in the microwave... then voila... I can eat.
Also Boston Market sells salads that are devine... specifically their Garden Salad which they sell for about $5.
At Wendy's they sell the Mandarin Chicken Salad. Take off the croutons and mandarin oranges and voila... for about $5 a healthy nutritious meal especially if you are on the go and/or don't have time to prepare your own food.
Hope this helps others because I know how difficult it is to lose weight. I have been there and no matter what plan or diet you choose... it is hard work![]()
Naughty Angel...what kinds of dressing do you put on your salads? I'm not on atkins, but I am trying to watch my fat and carb intake.
When I eat salads I use regular Ranch dressing or Caesar dressing. I never use the low-fat ones because they tend to have more sugar in them to make up for the fat. Fat in the food is used as fuel to burn fat and it helps keep you satiated or full... longer.Originally Posted by CaliforniaAllie
Unfortunately the media has misled many people to believe that fat in food is bad for you which probably made many Americans run for low-fat foods only to discover that they have more sugar in them and sugar is one ingredient that affects blood sugar level and thus insulin.
Anyway for salad dressing I eat at most one or two tablespoon per salad and it's the one with fat in them. About one or two grams of carbs per serving.
I should mention that I was super skeptical about Atkins claims. I had to find out for myself that his assertion that fat in food is the fuel that burns body fat is true and it is. I was not easily persuaded and it took me awhile to change my thoughts about eating fat but I shed 13 pounds off in three months and have kept it off while eating a few tablespoons of fatty salad dressing. One or two T per serving of salad max.
Oh and someone posted this website here awhile ago and it was the main reason why I re-considered Atkins:
http://www.sugarfreesheila.com/MyStory.html
I don't know her nor have I ever met her but if you look at her pics... well once I saw her before and after pics... that is when I read the book LOL Just a heads up for others who may wanna see an example of what is possible with Atkins.

Well as always, me being the Ebay queen I got 3 SBD books! Hopefully I'll be able to read them in the next week or so.
My ex and I are going to start the diet together, when she comes down here to visit. So good thing I won't have to go through this all alone. I'll keep you ladies posted
