Thumbs down Alcoholism in my family

I have a few relatives who don't seem to care. One has turned into a bum that lives with my aunt & he's in his mid-30's. An uncle who died bc of it. He had lots of trips to the hospital and just didn't learn a lesson, just didn't care until.
And now my mom's cousin just threw up a big chunk of his liver...wow! I didn't think it was possible for someone to throw up their own liver from excess drinking. He has a little bit of liver left. He's now on a HUGE waiting list for a liver transplant. But he wont be the first to get it. Cancer patients are getting it first, not to ppl who fucked it up on their own....and it's even a long wait for them too.

How crazy is that, throwing up your own liver!

It is crazy! And evidence of what a powerful disease alcoholism is. I'm so sorry to hear you have this rampant in your family; fortunately, in my family, the generation preceding me started to get help. I hope that you take care of yourself and bear in mind that there are genetic factors involved, so that anyone with a strong family background of addiction is at risk herself.

But you sound pretty lucky if your parents themselves escaped it; that's something to be really thankful for.

I don't understand that. The liver is connected among its lobes and to the rest of the body with nerves, blood vessels, fascial attachments, bile ducts, and so on. You cannot even surgically remove a liver lobe without tying off the blood vessels to it. I guess if a liver section was necrotic due to ongoing disease, it could chunk off and enter the bile duct? I dunno. Seems crazy indeed.

There's some alcoholism in my family, including one of my parents. Just because they go down that path doesn't mean you do. I didn't. I hope. But it's good to have increased self-awareness and discipline on the issues. Statistically and perhaps genetically, you're at higher risk, so just be conscious of the signs and hazards. Good luck.

Yeah, thank goodness my parents don't drink like that. My dad hates it(he'll have red wine once in a blue) & my mom will have one or two only on special occasions.

My mom's cousin told his dr. that he drinks two beers a day, which was a bullshit lie. The dr. said two beers is about the same equivilant as to a shot of whiskey. He would drink more then that. And lots of strong mixed alcohols at family parties. I remember his face was always red. He has to take meds for life.

I don't drink at all anymore. After 21 it just isn't that much fun

Plus I come from a family ravaged from alcoholism. It made my childhood pretty shitty and I have no intentions of making my adulthood shitty too!
