    Default Photo Shoot Props

I have to get promo shots done before I start featuring, and I'm hoping to find a photographer that I like so that I can get the photos done by the end of June. I'm not exactly sure how this works though. Am I expected to bring along any props that I wish to have in my pictures? I would imagine that for photo shoots for magazines, the photographer would provide everything needed, but for a promo shoot just for my use (for my website, to sell, to send to clubs to promote myself) am I expected to bring props along? For example, one of the shots I'm thinking about would be me surrounded by fake snow, wearing only a scarf, or a hat and boots, or something like that. Would I have to bring along the fake snow?

I'm sure I will have to ask the specific photographer what his usual routine is and how he usually does things, but since I don't have a photographer yet, I was hoping someone would be able to give me a little guidance, so that if I need all the props for my shoot, I can start looking now so that when it comes time to do the shoot I'm not rushing around trying to get everything together. Thanks!

I think it depends on the photographer. Some specialize in Feature photography and havea lot of props handy, then again, some dont specialize in anything and still do. I know that some of the features I know have talked about some photograhers already having props... But it cant hurt to have some stuff handy. Find out about the person you're getting to do the pics so you know to get/bring stuff or not. I think the really well prepared photographers have background and scenery props handy, such as the fake snow, but might not have other props... items to sit on, stand on, hold, pose with, etc....

Thanks Paige! I just have to find a photographer now... lol.. I don't want to have to travel too far for this photo shoot, because I just need something simple to get my started. Once I get going I'll get a better/more elaborate photo shoot done that I will be willing to travel for, but for right now, I want to try to keep it simple and very inexpensive (which means I want to go somewhere within a few hours driving distance (probably will end up being Chicago).

You went with.. Ken's agency? Yes? I think? Cant hurt to drop an email to some of his features and ask where they went and if they always brought their own stuff. Or even Ken might know who you can contact.

Oh! And I often bookmark props and such for my own future shoot ideas, so if you need urls for anything... lemme know!

^^^ Yeah I'm going with Ken. He gave me the name of a photographer in Milwaukee (Jack P.) but I haven't called him yet. Ken said he isn't sure if Jack is still in the business. I wouldn't mind taking a trip to Chicago- that's only about 3 hours from where I live, so that wouldn't be bad. Ken said that he's gonna get me some more numbers of photographers I can call to try to set something up.

Thanks for your help! And I definetely will need props- just not quite sure what I want yet. I'm starting to think about shows I could put together, but I won't be doing any bookings until next summer, so I have a little bit of time yet.

Oh- I remember seeing a feature with this, but I can't remember which feature it was, but for her nurse set she had a big shot (like injection, not alcohol shot- can't think if there's a more technical word for it). It was about a foot long it looked like. I thought it would be really cool to have one of those, especially if it was a working shot and could actually shoot out liquid like a squirtgun. I think I'm going to do a nurse set at Nudes a Poppin, and I thought this would be a cool prop to have for my show. Have you ever seen something like that? If I could remember which feature had it, I would email her to find out where she got it, although I don't know if it actually could squirt anything.

Do you mean a syringe? I would go to a toy store and look at the Dr kits or the costume section of party store. They are sure to have some there. Worst case scenario you can get real syringes from a vet supply. I'm not sure how big the real ones come though.

It's fairly standard for even small, private studios to have some stuff to root around in, including different clothing. No guarantees, but fairly standard. But if you have something specific in mind, yeah, better grab it yourself and bring it along.

    Good luck, and have fun!

I guess I have lucked out on the photo shoot part of the biz. I just smile real sweet and ask the photographer each day if I can have a couple shots from my "pretty girls". Most photographers I have worked with have some props, but bringing stuff you know you want to use can't hurt.

even though most photographers/studios do have props, im always on the lookout for stuff i can use in my shoots.

i find a lot of cool little cheap things at variety/discount stores, so i'll always buy them and keep them in a box at home til i do a shoot where i think i can use them.
